Ruby's POV

"Today we come together to celebrate the life of Jessica Bradley"

I was in the church, attending my Mum's funeral, trying my very hardest to keep it together. Joe had to come with me, as much as I didn't want him to. We were in the front row but I sat as far away from him as I possibly could.

"Jessica was an amazing, strong, independent woman" the vicar said. "She raised her fourteen year old daughter, Ruby, as a single mother"

I wiped the few stray tears from the corner of my eyes.

"Jessica was always out to help others" the vicar said. "She began training to become a member of the police force and a year later became an officer. She was about to be promoted as a sergeant in the next upcoming days. She would have been the youngest sergeant to ever work in the UK, at an outstanding age of only twenty seven"

I felt more tears fills my eyes, hating the fact that that lowlife took everything important away from her!

"And now her daughter, Ruby, will come up and read a poem" the vicar said.

Warily, I stood up, walked to the podium and faced everyone.

"Um hi" I said shakily. "Um, I tried to write my own poem, but I couldn't find the right words and it didn't seem good enough for my mum. So, I picked one out and tweaked the words slightly to what I thought my Mum would like."

I took a deep breath.

"This is called: I miss you, Mum" I said.

"I thought of you with love today,

But that is nothing knew.

I thought of you yesterday,

And days before that too.

I think of you in silence,

I often speak your name.

All I have are memories,

And your picture in a frame.

You memory is my keepsake,

With which i'll never part.

The clouds have you in their keeping,

I have you in my heart."

I put the poem in my pocket and retook my seat.

"Thank you, Ruby" the vicar said. "That was beautiful"

The service continued.

"She'd be so proud of you" Joe said in my ear.

I couldn't take his words of pity; not in my mum's funeral service.

"Like you'd know!" I hissed bitterly.

**********

We were at the wake. Family members and family friends who I had no clue of their existence were constantly coming up to me.

"Jaz was a lovely woman" a supposed family friend said to me.

Was she kidding?!

Jaz?!

That wasn't even her name!

How could she not know my mum's name?!

"Her name was Jess" I said bitterly through my teeth.

"Oh yes, lovely Jess" the woman laughed like she'd done nothing wrong.

As I rolled my eyes, I saw Joe walk towards me.

Great! More people to annoy me!

"Such a shame of her passing" the woman said. "At least she died peacefully"

Was this woman having a laugh?!

Peacefully!

She was stabbed in the heart!

My Mum was murdered!

"Are your for real?!" I spat. "She was stabbed in the heart! Do you even know anything?! Why are you even h-"

"Ok, let's go outside" Joe interrupted.

He put his hands on my shoulders and guided me outside.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I yelled once we got outside.

"Saving you from being kicked out" he said.

"She knew nothing about her!" I yelled.

"I know" he sighed.

Joe put his hand on my shoulder, which I instantly shook off.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I spat.

"I thought you could do with some comfort" he said.

"Why the hell would I want it from you?!" I spat.

"Come on, Ruby" Joe said. "I thought we were getting somewhere"

"Really?!" I scoffed. "Nothing's changed! I just had other things to think about than arguing with you!"

Joe turned around and sighed.

"Nothing to say?" I spat.

He didn't say anything. His gaze was focused on something else. I realised what.

Standing a few meters away from us were the worst people in the world.

The people i'd only seen in pictures.

The people who broke my mum!

My mum's so called parents!

My grandparents!
