Venus POV
After finishing I head back to the lab to check up on any progress the team has made as I meet Temp also seeming to check up as we go up onto the platform seeing Professor Jude as Temp says, "Dr. Saroyan tells me that you determined cause of death." I get excited, "That's wonderful, what did you find Professor Jude?" He looks at us smiling, "Keen observation and careful thought are traits that are as valuable as kindness, understanding and compassion." Temp then says, "Much more valuable, actually." I shake my head a bit, "No, I agree with Professor Jude on that Temp. Learn as much as I have, you'll come to understand the importance and value a lot more clearly."
Professor Jude smiles as he begins to explain to us, "Well, I try to promote all the traits which make for a good citizen." We then look at the computer screen of an up-close image of the wound indicating cause of death as we see something a bit off about it as Temp says, "I agree that substantial damage has been done to this rib. Do you have an explanation for the fact that the two sides of the rib fail to match?" "I missed something?" I nod a bit, "The two sides of the fracture. There's a gasp of at least seven millimeters which is unaccounted for." He looked a bit astonished, "I missed it entirely. But there's no shame in making a mistake."
I smile a bit, "Where have you been all my life." He just smiles as Temp doesn't think of the same as me as she tells him, "If you're a child. But here, that kind of carelessness could lead to a murderer escaping." He nods a bit agreeing as he then says, "And as the old adage goes, 'If at first you don't succeed, you pick yourself up, and, ignoring all the doom-sayers and mopey-dopes, you try again."
He then grabs some tweezers looking inside the fatal wound as he finds something taking it out as it seems to be a piece of the victim's rib as he says, "Amazing. Now the only component that's evading us is a bullet that caused this injury." But Temp says, "No, that is not the only component evading us." I nod agreeing as I say, "Good work Professor Jude." "Thank you."
Temp and I leave and go over to Angie's as we tell her what we found and have her come up with a scenario on how the victim's wound got inflicted. About 30 minutes later Cam comes over as we called her as she says, "What's going on?" Temp answers, "We've asked Angela to create a reenactment of the victims death." Angie nods, "I'm just inputting the data now." She inputs it as we see an image of the victim's anatomy as Cam then says, "Professor Jude turned out to be quite impressive, didn't he?"
I nod agreeing as Temp says, "Well, if you're six years old." Cam and I say at the same time, "A kind mind is a fine mind." Angie and Temp looked at us as Cam explains, "It's just, that stuff gets into your head, and..." I nod agreeing, "Yeah... let's just say he has very catching phrases, is all." Cam nods, "Exactly. Go, Angela." Angie nods beginning, "As you can see, the victim was struck in the left fourth rib with a blow that was powerful enough, not only to fracture the rib, but also dislodge a portion of the bone."
I nod pointing out, "Professor Jude found a fragment of the rib. The theory is that the fragment was propelled forward and shot into the heart, thus killing him." Cam then asks, "So he wasn't killed by a bullet, but by a piece of his own rib?" I nod, "There's no indication of the weapon being a bullet." "What did the rib damage?" Angie then says, "I hate to be the one to suggest this, but this might be the perfect time for Ven, Hodgins and Science Dude to join forces."
My ears perked up a bit hearing something very fun and pleasing as Cam says, "Bring merriment to your experiment." We all look at her as she continues, "I just... made that one up myself." I just smile, "I'm fine with whatever way you say it. I'm just glad we get to do an experiment!" I run off as they watch me as a child getting a present, "Hodgins! Hodgins! Get your gear and tools and Professor Jude! We're doing an experiment!" I could hear him from his workspace yelling out just as excited, "Really?!" "Yeah!" "Yes! Professor Bunson Jude the Science Dude!"
We were about done finishing up our experiment and creating our fake human ribs as I finish up seating up the fake ribs as Hodgins says, "Human ribs can withstand approximately 400 pound of force... before breaking." I nod as I add, "Now, ribs one through three are the hardest, with four through nine getting progressively weaker." Professor Jude finishing up with the balloon organs adds, "Our victim was large man with big muscles and dense bones." Hodgins then says, "I never thought of using paint stir sticks in place of ribs." I chuckle a bit finishing as Professor Jude says, "Many common household items mimic the properties of human body parts, like cantaloupe melons, or pudding."
I nod agreeing as Hodgins says, "I'm not gonna ask about the pudding." I push our fake victim back a bit as I say, "Start slowly and work our way up?" We put on our protective gear as we go to the possible weapons as Hodgins hands Professor Jude a baseball, "Professor?" He takes one and setting up ready to throw the ball at our fake victims' ribs, "Thank you." I take out the radar ready to check Professor Jude's throw as I let them know, "Ready." Hodgins then says, "Captain Speedy would say the speed would give us velocity and force."
Professor Jude throws the baseball getting a good hit on the fake ribs as I check the radar announcing, "That's 56 miles per hour which is 25.3 meters per second." Hodgins nods, "That's not enough." I nod agreeing as him and Professor Jude switches place as Hodgins says taking another possible weapon, "Ooh! How about a slingshot with a golf ball?"
We get ready as I let him know, "Ready." Hodgins nods as he aims and fires the slingshot getting a good hit as well, but it didn't break the ribs as well as he says, "Wow. Those ribs are really tough." I nod as I get the speed, "101 miles per hour, so 45.15 meters per second... give or take." Professor Jude smiles, "Science is fun." Hodgins and I both smile, "Yeah." But he continues, "But we do have a responsibility to the truth." We nod listening as he continues, "And the truth is, whatever hit this big, tough man's ribs made a piece fly off."
I smile as I hand Professor Jude the radar as I tell them tacking a hatchet, "Shall we then step this thing up a magnitude or two?" They both smile excited as Professor Jude says, "Amazing! But is it alright to handle that?" Hodgins and I both nod as he explains, "Oh, yeah, definitely fine. It's actually rather safer for us if she handles it. She's ex-military." I nod as Professor Jude says, "Excellent, and thank you for your service as well." I nod, "My pleasure, now for a bit of fun." They nod as they let me know when they are ready before throwing the hatchet.
After a bit we still haven't found the perfect weapon as we hear Angela call Professor Jude and I, "Dude! Venus! Dude!" We drop our stuff and make our way to the bone examination room as he calls out, "Coming! We're coming!" We get there seeing Angie and Temp as I ask, "You need anything?" "You're both on. Dazzle!"
We nod going over to Temp looking at the rib fragment as I go and stand next to Temp as Professor Jude stands on the other side of us as Temp asks him, "Dude, what do you see here?" "Ribs. Broken ribs." "Could you be more specific?" "Okay... this is a magnification of the fourth left rib, so it's big. And our eyes can see things that are usually too tiny for the human eye. And right... here... where it's a little, bumpy and weird, that's where the bones started to heal."
I ask seeing what happened to the victim's rib as I ask, "Remodeling?" He nods, "Yes, which means this rib was broken before this man was killed. Amazing!" I nod agreeing as Temp says, "This injury occurred perhaps a week before the victim was killed." He adds, "Whatever made him die was not the same thing that broke his rib." I nod, "There were two injuries- one that broke off a piece of the rib..."
He nods finishing my sentence, "And another approximately a week later, which propelled the bone into his heart and killed him dead." I nod as Temp says, "Well, 'killed him dead' is redundant." "But it's clear- and what do we say about clarity? It's a barbarity that clarity is a rarity." I nod, "You can't counter that one Temp." She nods, "Yes, I agree. That's very true."
Later Booth calls Temp and I to the precent as he tells us what was going on and plays us a recording of a fugitive's wife that the victim was chasing as we hear her say, "I can meet you at the corner of 21st and Scott in 30 minutes. Okay, that recording was made an hour and a half ago. I contacted the officers that were supposed to protect Molly and she's already gone."
I nod a bit as Temp asks, "What kind of woman runs away with a man whom she knows to be a murderer?" Sweets shakes his head admitting, "I should've known. She's so used to being controlled, she can't live without it." Caroline looks at him, "I don't care about why. The question is where. Where are they?" Booth points to a map, "Right here. Okay, the intersection where they planned to meet is right here. Now, if Molly is driving..." Sweets shakes his head, "No, no, no. He would have taken over once they got together." Temp asks, "How could you possibly know that?" "Well, since she's willing to accept the fact that her husband killed a man, it suggests that she's a submissive and compliant woman."
Caroline asks, "So, where do you think they'll go?" Temp cuts in, "This is ludicrous. Sweets can't possibly know that." "Actually, I can. What I'm doing here- it's no less precise than profiling a suspect. So, this meeting is not random. It's right off the 66 Interstate. From here, Braverman will head west." Temp scoffs a bit, "Now you're psychic?" "87% of all people escaping head west. I know. It's one of those bizarre psychological truths. It's-It's like, uh... circling clockwise when you're staking out a house." "Even the Dude would call that pseudo-science."
Booth then says, "Credit card records show past reservations at campgrounds at Walker State Park and Fremont State Park." Sweets nods, "Yeah. They would want a familiar place where they feel secure." He then looks at Temp adding, "Both West of here, by the way. Just..." Temp gives him a look as I smile a bit not wanting to laugh as Booth gets them to pay back attention, "Okay, well, the fastest route here is between the 66 and the 81." Caroline nods, "I'll buy it, especially since we don't have anything else." I then say, "He won't make it to the 81." Temp nods agreeing, "She's right." Caroline looks at us, "Now who's psychic?" Temp explains, "When Braverman rolled off the car, he landed flatfooted. From that height and the speed he was going, he must have dislocated his femoral head from his acetabular."
Booth then says, "Oh, it couldn't be that bad. He's been running ever since." I shake my head, "Once he's in the car and immobile, his adrenaline will wear off, and the pain will become unbearable. He'll need drugs and medical care." Carlone asks, "You don't think he'd be stupid enough to go to a hospital?" I smile a bit, "He won't have a choice." "That smile just gave me some chills." I stand going up to the screen looking at the map as I start making some estimations as Booth says, "I'll contact all the hospitals and the urgent care facilities along the route. Let's go."
Temp nods as Booth turns to me, "Let's go Blueberry." I hum a bit turning to them, "You two go on without me on this, "I think I'll try this bounty hunting business for a few hours." Everyone look at each other as Caroline asks, "Why? Do you know where he is?" I shrug a bit, "I have an idea, but it's not solid enough for all of us to go. Better if I go by myself." She shrugs, "I'm alright with that." Booth looks at me, "Alright, but be careful and call us if you find them." I nod, "Of course." They leave as I grab my things as I then ask pointing at an area of the map, "Hey, Sweets send me a text on what this area is called for me please." He nods as I leave to find my hospital or urgent care.
I was on the road over at the destination point where the couple met as I continue down until I get a message from Sweets sending me the area that I pointed out to him as he sends me an address to one urgent care and another a hospital. Seeing how Temp described Braverman's injury I can concur that he would rather go to a hospital which has more medication and to ease his pain than an urgent care as I clicked onto the address seeing that it was McArthur Hospital which is off the 66. I smile a bit and make my way over to the hospital.
Once I finally arrived, I start walking into the emergency room where the two most likely go into as I look around until a couple catches my attention as the woman was helping a man who fits the description of limping and seeing from his limp he definitely dislocated his femoral head from his acetabular. I watch as they get admitted in as I call Booth. A few seconds later I hear him answer, "Booth." "Hey Ranger, I found them over here at McArthur Hospital just off the 66." I then hear Temp ask, "Where they carrying any potatoes?" "What? Potatoes? Uh... no... not from what I can see. Why?" Booth then speaks, "Don't worry. We're eight miles out. We're on our way. Good job Blueberry. Don't take your eyes off them until we get there." "Of course, you can count on me. See you then."
I keep a close eye on them discreetly not to scare them off as I begin doing a little inspection layout to get an idea of the floor plan on this level just in case things don't go as we wanted. After about 15 minutes I come around the corner as I see a strangely suspicious woman carrying a big black bag asking something in the receptionist as I see her eyeing Braverman. Braverman see's this as well as the wife quickly helps him out of the bed and tries to get away. the only other exit from here is over by the back as I quickly make my way over there first.
I wait for a bit as I hear running coming over as I look seeing that it was the lady as she takes out her gun loading a bean bag, not noticing me I quickly sneak up on her and tackle her. She yells a bit as we begin rustling on the ground as she tries to get a hit on me. But she's really not that great on close combat as I easily take her down turning her on her back and twisting her arms behind her back as she struggles against me. "Let me go! Who the hell are you!"
I shrug a bit, "Just trying out this bounty hunting thing for fun and I must say, I'm good at this. Now stay still, until my partners arrive since your kind of interfering in police business." She continues struggling a bit as I hear someone coming over as I turn my head to the right as it was Braverman coming right towards us stopping to see us as she says, "Get off me. That's my bounty."
I quickly get on top of her subdue her as best as I can with my weight and legs as I grab her beanbag gun, "I'm going to borrow this real quick." I cock the gun and quickly turn to Braverman who was turning around as I quickly shot him as he grunts in pain falling onto the ground.
Just as he hits the ground Booth comes around the corner seeing us as he slows down sighing a bit as I smile dropping the bean bag gun for a moment getting my grip again on the lady as I say, "Hey, Ranger. Just in time, this lady here was getting in the way so I had to subdue her to get Braverman." He nods, "Good job." He goes over to help me with her putting her in handcuffs as I get up taking the bean bag gun inspecting it as I hear running again as we look seeing Temp this time coming around as she stops seeing all of us, "Venus, Booth." "Hey Temp."
Booth asks, "Bones, you okay? Where's Molly?" "She's incapacitated. Most likely for the next six to eight hours." I nod a bit impressed, "Way to handle yourself there Temp. Nice." "Thank you. But it was merely an accident." I nod as I then ask, "Hey when you meant potato, did you mean as in a potato gun that was used as the murder weapon?" "Yes, why?"
I show them the lady's gun, "Well, this is equivalent to a potato gun. And if you check the bean bag then you'll most likely find blood on it." Temp finds the bean bag picking it up as she nods, "Yes, this seems about right." Booth then says trying to understand, "So this bean bag gun could generate the same Fig Newtons per square inch?" Temp and I both correct him, "It's just newtons."
Temp asks as we look at the bounty hunter lady, "The bounty hunter killed the Wolf?" I nod a bit as Booth says, "They were both after Braverman at the same time in the woods near his cabin. So she just takes him out for the 200 grand bounty." I nod, "That seems accurate." Temp adds, "Well, it was an accident. The rib fragment broke off in the fight at the pool hall." Temp looks at the lady, "You had no idea that your bean bag gun would kill him."
Booth and I looked at Temp a bit weirdly as she doesn't usually defend suspects as Booth points it out first, "Bones, what are you, a defense lawyer now?" "Well, a kind mind is a fine mind." I start chuckling a bit seeing why Temp was like that as Booth says, "She cut off his head. That wasn't an accident." "I have no rebuttal to that statement." Booth nods getting the bounty hunter standing up to take her in, "Right. Let's go. And Blueberry stay here with Braverman until other officers arrive."
I nod, "Got it." I then look at Temp smiling, "So Professor Jude convinced you?" She nods, "Yes, he was very useful and impressed me when he help discover the murder weapon." I nod, "That's good to hear, because the show was already going to happen." She looks at me a bit shocked, "What? So even when I said no, it was still happening?" I nod, "Yeah, but it's nicer when you agree with it. Don't you think?" She thinks for a moment nods, "I suppose it is."
About three days later the whole lab was set up looking kid friendly as all the cameras and lights were set up as well as the audience was watching below the platform. Booth then tells us, "I am so nervous. Anyone else nervous? You nervous? I'm nervous?" I smile as Caroline then says, "What is she starts explaining human dissection to these kids?" "That's gonna be a problem." I shake my head at them, "Don't worry, I already went some things over with Temp and had the wardrobe team have something set up where she doesn't look so serious and more softer towards the kids." They nod a bit as Wendell wraps his arm around me as he says, "I'm actually excited to see what Dr. B does."
We then stop talking as the main theme music begins playing as the kids begin cheering letting us know that the show's beginning. We then see Professor Jude come out from the back as we all applaud for him as he begins speaking, "What is the Code of the Scientist?" All the kids yell out, "Observe, analyze, deduce." Angie then says in a low whisper, "Wow. These are not normal fun children." I chuckle a bit as well as Wendell as Professor Jude then starts introducing Temp, "Kids, I want you to meet a very special friend. In fact, this is her lab. Isn't it amazing?"
All the kids yell, "It's amazing!" "She's a forensic anthropologist. And what she does is amazing. She looks at old bones, she figures out how people lived, what they were like, even how they died. She's amazing. Like magic." "She's amazing!" "But it's not magic. It's..." All the kids yell as well as Hodgins and Wendell getting into the show, "Science!" I smile as Professor Jude finally says, "Her name is Dr. Temperance Brennan, but she's better known as the Bone Lady."
We all cheer and applaud for her as we see Temp coming out from the back wearing a skeleton costume with a tutu and big foam bone hands. She waves at all of us and bowing down to the crowd as Professor Jude asks, "Dr. Brennan, would you like to lead us in our Scientist's Oath?" In character Temp answers, "I most certainly would, Science Dude." They then begin the oath doing hand signs as the children repeat her and Professor Jude, "We see big stars. Tiny atoms, too. Because that..."
Everyone yells, "...Is what scientist do!" "We get the facts. And say what's true." "Because that is what scientist do!" "We use our minds. Embrace what's new." "Because that is what scientist do!" Professor Jude turns to her, "Thank you, Dr. Brennan." They shake hands as Temp says, "No. Thank you." We all applaud and cheer for them as we all enjoy the making of the show and the experiments the two do together.
