Venus POV
We are walking in Cam's workspace where the rest of the team is as we enter Temp says, "Alright lets start examining the body. They turn to look at us as Hodins and Cam nods, but I see Wendell looking at me in what seems to be a daze like look. I just blush a bit giving him a little smile as Hodgins comes around Wendell with some equipment patting his back real quick whispering something to him. I was a bit curious but didn't say anything as I walk next to him and Temp next to me, with Hodgins at the end of the table and Cam on the other side. I still feels eyes on me as I look seeing that Wendell was looking down at my chest as it clicks that Hodgins must have told him that I wasn't wearing a bra underneath. I blush even more as I lightly kick Wendell without anyone noticing getting him to pay back attention. He get's the message as he clears his throat a bit seeing his ears a bit red as well as Temp then begins to explain our findings. As we are examining the victim as Hodgins says, 'DARPA created a chicken soldier?" I just hum wanting to just focus on my work as Wendell says, "I do not see the United States military making a chicken soldier. An eagle, maybe." "That's why we couldn't find his so-called fingers. Because they were transformed into talons. I mean, talons would be much better weapons." I then quickly say with a bit of venom in my words, "They don't make people into creatures, they would only try to enhance their senses like some animals or make some sort of cyborge or something..."
They all looked at me for a moment as Cam decides to bring the conversation a bit somewhere else, "Human remains in water tend to lose all their fingers and toes due to predation." Temp then says, "But if I were going to combine human and animal D.N.A... with an eye toward creating a super soldier, I'd go with a flatworm." I stop working tensing a bit, even though I know Temp means well and doesn't mean any harm from those words, it still makes me sick when anyone talks about human experimentation. Wendell asks Temp, "Why?" "Self-regeneration, obviously." That was the last stray for me as I say backing up from the table taking off my gloves, "Sorry, but I need to step out for a moment. I feel sick." They all watch me as I quickly turn and walk out of the room fast.
3rd POV
They all watched as Venus quickly makes her way out of the room holding her mouth seeing that she really felt sick. This worried Wendell a lot wanting to follow her and see if she was going to be okay. But Cam got all their attentions back as she says, "People. Let's break this down as though we aren't in a comic book." Hodgins then says, "Man, I've never Venus sick before like that. I didn't think that alcohol could mess her around like that." Wendell begins to feel guilty if that was making Venus not feeling well since it was his fault that got her to drink as Brennan says, "It's true that Venus rarely gets sick, but I am sure it wasn't alcohol that caused her to feel sick." Wendell looks at her with concern, "Then what made her feel sick?" Brennan just looks at him, "It's most likely the conversation of DARPA and the experimentation that we were discussing about." Hodgins was a bit confused, "But Venus loves experiments and comic books, I would assume that she would've been very into this conversation the most." Brennan shakes her head, "No, it's more that she despises the whole concept and practical methods since she was the only surviving experiment from one of DARPA's projects..." She then realizes what she let out as she quickly regrets not paying attention what she said as she looks at everyone.
Everyone looks at her stunned at this new information as she says to them, "...I wasn't supposed to say that... That was supposed to be a classified secret..." Hodgins then says slowly, "She's a super solider... Oh, man that would definitely make her feel sick." Wendell nods slowly looking out of the door feeling a huge amount of regret for not noticing her discomfort and not stopping the conversation all together. Cam then speaks getting them all to pay back attention to the case even though she also feels guilty of their conversation as she says, "No water in the sinuses or lungs. No pulmonary edema." Hodgins says, "He didn't drown." Brennan then says, "No, the sinus cavity is abnormally large." Cam nods, "His whole sinus cavity is scarred. The septum's almost gone. Evidence of multiple constrictions of the arterioles at Kieselbach's plexus." Brennan then inserts a long thin camera through the nasal cavity as they look at the screen seeing the inside. Wendell says, "Well, that is a lot of scar tissue. What are we talking here- plastic surgery?" Brennan speaks, "The scarring could explain why he has a beaklike nose." Wendell adds, "Polyps and tumors in the maxillary and sphenoid could've enlarged the cavity." Cam then says, "The closest thing I've ever seen to that is a cocaine addict who ran out of drugs and started snorting things like sugar and powdered detergent." Hodgins sees something as he asks, "Anyone have any explanation for these red stripes extending from the soft palate down the esophagus?"
They all look seeing the red stripes as Cam questions, "Lacerations?" "Mmm. May I?" She nods as Hodgins opens a part of his neck seeing the red stripes, "I don't think these are lacerations." He grabs some tweezers pulling one of the stripes out as everyone looked as Brennan asks, "IS that an organism?" Hodgins answers, "Syngamus trachea. It's a gapeworm." Wendell asks, "Where'd it come from?" "I don't think you're gonna like my answer. Uh, it's a parasite found in... chickens." Cam sighs, "Do not tell me we're back to super chicken-soldier again." They all looked at each other wondering what they had discovered as Wendell was more worried about how Venus was doing right now as he shifts his gaze out of the door.
Venus POV
Temp and I are at Booth office as I had calmed down and let everything out in the bathroom of my panic room. Temp was sitting on the seat as I was standing behind her as Booth looks at the picture as he asks, "Why a chicken?" Temp says, "Wendell thinks maybe he was supposed to be an eagle." He nods as he looks at me, "You don't want to sit down?" I shake my head as Temp answers, "Her hips hurt if she sits down, we believe that she slept wrong or something last night when she drank." He looks at me surprised, "You drank?" I nod, "Yeah, not the greatest idea I must say." He just nods as he then says into the phone, "You should be getting it now." He then looks at us, "If you make a super soldier, you think it would be, like a robot or something invisible." Temp then says, "Now you're just delving into pure science fiction." "Unlike a flatworm. That's not science fiction. Or a half chicken. That's not considered science fiction." He goes back to the phone as I whisper to Temp, "They did attempt those ideas though... but they turned out horrible..." I shiver at that memory as Temp looks at me a bit saddened as Booth says in the phone, "Yeah. Okay, so we agree that it does look like a chicken. No, it's not a joke. Just tell me if we have your missing DARPA guy. Does your missing sergeant look anything like an animal- any kind of animal?" He looks at us defeated, "A bulldog." He hangs up the phone as Temp asks, "So the Defense Department won't be claiming the body?" "Nope." Booth's computer then beeps letting him know that he got something as he sits up straight, "Oh. We're getting a hit off of Angela's chicken man picture. Probably from the animal shelter. Whoa. Oh, God."
Temp and I ask, "What?" He takes out a photo of Angie's creation looking at it and the computer, "Wow. Is Angela good, or is she good?" Temp didn't understand, "Those are the same question." "Yeah." He turns the computer to us showing the victim photo seeing it was an exact match. I lean a bit reading the screen, "Nick Rabin. He's head of Personnel at Cucksten Farms." Temp asks, "A chicken farm?" I looked at it a bit amused, "Huh? It looks like my prayers were answered." Temp looked at me confused, "But you didn't pray?" "I know, it's just an expression sis." She nods as we decided to head over there ourselves.
We are in the car as Booth says, "This is getting weirder and weirder." We finally made it to the town where the company is as we drive up to the factory seeing a bunch of protesters as they yell, "Save a chicken!" "Fry a worker!" "Cluck you!" Cluck you!" "Close down Clucksten! Cluck you! Cluck you! Close down Clucksten!" Booth drives carefully to the gates as he asks, "I wonder what they're protesting." Temp answers, "My first guess- the stench." I nod agreeing" "At least they're not throwing eggs at us, huh?" Booth rolls down his window as one of the protesters were there yelling out protesting as a security guard pushes him away, "Rest the voice, Josh." He turns to us, "You the, uh, F.B.I. folks?" Booth nods, "Yeah." "Come on in. We'll find a quieter place to talk." They let us in as Booth goes to park. We are inside the factory now as Booth asks the guard, "So, what's with the protestors?" "Eh, maybe half are animal rights nuts." "Ah. We look to the right seeing a window showing many chickens cluttered together as Booth says, "They might have a point." Temp adds, 'The other half must just hate the smell." I nod as the guard says, "Clucksten Farms has been here since the 1940s. We didn't ask anyone to build a development downwind."
We then begin to follow him again as Booth says disgusted, "What's that smell?" We arrived at an office as the guard nocks the door as we hear a lady say, "Yeah?" He opens the door letting us in as the lady says, "Hey, John." "Mrs. Rabin. This is Agent Booth and his associates, Dr. Brennan and Dr. Venus. They're from the F.B.I. This is Gaynor Rabin. She's the accountant here at Clucksten." We shake her hand as John the guard adds, "She's also Nick's wife." He exits the door as Mrs. Rabin says, "Is this about my husband? He's dead, isn't he?" Booth nods, "I'm afraid so. I'm very sorry for your loss." "What happened to him?" I then say, "We're still on the process of figuring that out." She nods as Booth says, "You don't seem too surprised." "Nick was never the type to just disappear. I knew right away it was something terrible. Where'd you find him?" Temp answers, "In the Savage River, approximately 16 kilometers from here." "Nick drowned? I don't understand. He never swam in that river." Temp then continues, "Your husband's nose and sinuses were deformed. He didn't take the proper precautions at work, did he?" "No. I told him, but he didn't care." Booth whispers, "Sorry. Precautions to keep from turning into a chicken?" I nod whispering back, "It's the hydrogen sulfide we smell. Without a breathing apparatus, high concentrations over a period of time would deform the sinuses."
Mrs. Rabin then says, "Nick worked here since he was a teenager. He said he was a chicken farmer and he'd take the consequences. How did my husband end up in the river?" Booth speaks, "We were hoping maybe you'd be able to help us with that." "When I filed the Missing Persons report, I told the police everything. He just disappeared." I then say, "We have reason to believe this wasn't an accidental drowning." "You think my husband was murdered?" We nod as Booth says, "Yes." "Mr. Clucksten said that Nick was next in line to take over the business. The first people that you want to check out...are those anti-chicken fanatics at the gate. They always threaten to make an example out of someone." We leave as we are escorted out by John as we make it outside hearing the protesters again as we then see some workers from the factory coming through the protesters as some people say, "Hey, lady! Gonna go kill some chickens today?" They were all over the works faces as one of them snap back saying, "Get out of my face" "Go get a job! Murderer!" "Murderer now? What do you want me to do?" She takes the sign hitting the guy with it once and throws it on the ground as the guy yells, "She's psycho! Psycho chicken killer!" John gets to her first before she does anything, "Okay. Gin- Look, you're just giving them what they want." "I'm doing an honest day's work, damn it! That's all." "Just go. Just go. You don't want to be late for your shift." "All right." We just watched as John comes back to us as Temp says, "These people don't seem to like the way you treat the chickens." Booth adds, 'How do you treat your chickens?" "Like delicious birds that people love to eat." "Look, does anyone in particular have beef with, uh, Nick Rabin?"
John turns around looking at the crowd spotting the person as he points out to us, "Josh Parsons. He snuck in, he took some unauthorized video, cut it together in a very damning manner and he put it on the Internet. Nick popped him one too." We nod as Booth goes first over to Josh as Temp and I follow behind. Booth goes up to Josh as Temp stands next to him. I stand a bit away from the two as Booth says, "F.B.I. Special Agent Booth. This here is Dr. Temprence Brennan and Dr. Venus Brennan." Josh then says, "Are you here to protect them while they mistreat and torture the chickens on this farm... and the people who live downwind of its foul emanations?" "You practice that speech much, pal?" I then add, "We found Nick Rabin's body." Booth adds, "As of now, you are our number one suspect." "Please. I didn't kill anyone. I'm an extreme pacifist." Temp and I looked at him confused as Temp tells him, "That's an oxymoron. You're either extreme or a pacifist. You can't be both. "You are working as a tool of the poultry lobbyists. Code yellow! Code yellow!" I take this as a sign to move away as I see two buckets coming over to Temp and Booth as I would assume they would have one for me as I quickly step to the side tripping whoever was behind me as yellow paint spilled on the Temp and Booth as they throw paper feathers at them as well.
I sneaked my way behind Josh as he smiles at the two as I clear my throat making him look at me in surprise as I grab his hand twisting it making him yelp in pain getting on his knees on the ground as I say, "I don't appreciate you doing that at all to them. He groans in pain as Booth says to everyone, "Okay, you do know that you're all under arrest, right?" Booth then looks at me, "You could let him go know Blueberry." I nod letting Josh go pushing him down to the ground were there was some paint on the ground. I then walk up to the other two looking at the covered in paint and paper feathers as Temp asks, "How did you not get paint or feathered on" I shrugged, "I moved out of the way before they did that... but you two... Let's just get you both to the back of the car, I'll drive us back." They both nod agreeing as Booth hands me the keys.
I am back at the lab in the bone examination room with Wendell as I focus on the bones looking for anything to distract myself from thinking of anything. I know that if I looked at Wendell, I would become such a blushing mess that I would most likely faint before I could get a word out of anything. We were working in silence as I could feel his eyes glance on me every few minutes as I then say not looking, "You're looking. You have something you need to say?" I looked at him briefly meeting his eyes for a moment as I could feel a blush coming on my face as I recall those eyes last night. I quickly go back to the bones as Wendell sighs for a bit then asks, "Are you all, right?" I was a bit confused as he adds, "From this morning when we were discussing about the victim that was potentially part of DARPA... are you okay now?" I nod slightly, "Yeah... I'm fine now, thanks for asking." He nods as he then asks, "Then how are you feeling from last night?" I freeze a bit quickly turning my face away from his view as I blush furiously as I just nod as he says, "I heard that you're having some hip pain when you sit, sorry that's my fault." I stand their thinking what he said as I recall another memory from last night and the intense pleasure we both had as my blush grew even more as I looked like a tomato. Wendell seemed to be a bit worried from not hearing from me as he says, "I think we need to talk about it and I have something I want to tell you?" Before he could go any further I see Cam come inside as she says, "Cause of death, Mr. Bray?" She then looks at me seeing my bright red face as she says, "Oh, Venus..." I giver a slight shake of the head as she understands as she continues to say, "you're here as well, great."
Wendell begins to talk dropping our conversation for now. "Most of the fractures are postmortem. And the bone bruising- probably from getting over the dam... and getting stuck in the whirlpool at the bottom." Cam adds as my blush dies down as I join the conversation, "Like... going through a giant washing machine." I nod, "Yeah. But this damage to the cervical vertebrae is not postmortem." Wendell pulls up an image of a skull and the neck as I explain, "This is an undamaged cervical section." Wendell pulls up the image of our victim as he says, "Here's our victim. The C2 vertebra rotated laterally... while the ligaments and facets of the transverse processes were subluxed and locked." I conclude, "A broken neck" Wendell adds, "The fracture pattern suggests a wrenching motion." I show Cam how it's done with my hands as as she says, "You mean wrung?" I nod, "Yes. The victim was killed by having his neck wrung." Wendell adds, "Ironic, right?" Cam nods, "We are gonna have to catalog these injuries chronologically. Wendell talk to Angela. See if she has some kind of image technique that can help." We nod as Cam leaves. Wendell then turns to me about to say something as my phone rings as I pick it up seeing that I got a text from Booth saying to get Sweets and meet him at the Dinner for lunch. I turn to Wendell, "Sorry, but I have to go, Ranger wants me to go get Sweets and meet him up at the dinner." Before I leave, he grabs my hand stopping me as I turn to him.
I started blushing a bit at the contact as he says, "You should take a jacket with you." "Oh, I didn't bring one, plus it isn't too cold outside." Before I leave again, he still continues to hold onto me as he says, "Wait." I stop looking at him as he lets go of me taking of his lab coat. He has a jacket underneath it as he takes it off as well extending it to me. I look at it a bit confused as he says, "Here take mine." I shake my head, "No, it's okay. I'll be fine I promise, it's not cold outside." "I'm not worried about the coldness..." I looked at him confused as he see's my confuses as he steps closer to me, "I don't like when others look at what's not theirs." I don't seem to understand what's he's saying as I just looked at him confused again as I say, "Uh... right. But I really need to go. Keep your jacket, I don't want you to get cold in the lab either." I turn away from him about to leave as I hear a sigh from him as he grabs my hand again pulling me into his chest as I blush a bit more. He leans me forward a bit as I say, "What are you doing, Wen...?!" I feel him bite an exposed part of my shoulder as he sucks on it. The sensation makes me release a soft whimper as he then moves onto another spot of my exposed skin biting on it again making me place a hand on my mouth from releasing an embarrassing moan. He finishes looking at his accomplishment as he lets go of me. I was blushing red as I turn to him seeing a mischievous playful look on his face as he says, "When you go out everyone will see that I marked you or you could take my jacket. It's still a win-win for me." I blush taking his jacket putting it on as I leave without saying anything.
Sweets and I are with Temp and Booth at the Diner as Sweets says, "What if the victim used his wife's camera to strike back at the company that disfigured him?" Booth suggests, "Maybe he was having an affair." "Or maybe she was just sick of kissing a guy with a beak." Booth and I were sitting next to each other as Temp and Sweets were sitting across from us as I could see something wrong with Temp. Sweets laugh looking at the menu as he says, "Hey- Today's special- chicken. Ironic." Booth seemed to see something wrong with Temp as well as he says, "Right. Everything okay there, Bones? I know when something is wrong with you. And something's wrong, right? What can I do to help?" I nod adding, "Me too. I want to help you as well." She smiles at us, "Angela and I had a fight." Booth quickly puts down his menu, "Nothing I can do to help." We all looked at him as Temp asks, "You wanna hear about it?" "No." Sweets asks, "Why not?" "Why? Because her and Angela are best friends. And Bones is gonna want me to take her side... and agree that Angela was wrong. And then the two of them are gonna make up, and then they're gonna be mad at me. So, no, thank you."
Sweets nods, "That's very interesting." "You know, the way you say, 'very interesting' it's very irritating." He then looks at Temp, "Listen, Bones, I would do anything for you. I would die for you. I would kill for you. But I am not getting in between two best friends." I looked at him confused, "What? But you would always come between Zack and I." He looks at me, "That's a different topic." Temp nods, "Okay. What were you saying, Sweets?" "Hmm? Oh, I've, uh- I've been considering... the, uh, symbolism of this murder. Being tossed over a dam isn't very 'chickeny,' you know? You'd think that the victim would show up in a rotisserie or a deep fryer or something." Temp then says, "I remember a month ago a chicken restaurant chain... reported human phalanges in some deep-fired treats." I nod as Booth adds, "Kid bit into a thumb." Sweets add, "Right. The mom hit a toe. It was, uh, Bock Box Chicken Hut." I then say, "Maybe the toe is our victim's." Sweets nods, "Totally poetic justice." I nod, "If you can get the body parts from those chicken treats to the Jeffersonian, we'll see if they match our victim's."
Booth nods, "Okay." I stand up as Temp says, "We're going back to the lab. Send the fingers over when you get them." I nod as we begin to walk as Booth stops Temp, "Whoa, whoa. Listen, Bones. Everything is gonna be okay between you and Angela. All right? You two are like sisters." I clear my throat as he fixes his mistake, "You three are like sisters." Temp shrugs, "I'm just not used to not getting along with people." Sweets looks at her confused, "Seriously? 'Cause it seems like-" It seemed that Wendell had left a coin in his pocket as I threw it at Sweets hitting his forehead. Just at the same time Booth kicks his leg underneath him causing him to stop groaning in pain as he holds his leg and forehead as Temp says, "Thanks, Booth. Just bring in the human parts tomorrow, and I'll... take a look." "Okay." I wrap my arm around Temps as we begin walking away as I tell her, "And as your actual biological sister I am here for you. So, rant all you want, and I will listen to everything that's on your mind." She smiles as I lay my head on her shoulder as she does the same laying hers on my head as we walk on the street back to the lab.
We are at the lab as it was turning dark outside as Booth was able to get most of the body parts to us as Cam, Temp, and I are examining them as Cam says, "These have been frozen, flashed-fried, microwaved, bitten, spat out and then preserved as evidence." I nod as Temp says, "Bone density would indicate that all four digits came from the same person." Cam adds, "They all came from the same local chain of chicken restaurants." "Bock Box." Cam looked at Temp confused, "Beg your pardon?" I answered, "Bock Box Chicken Huts." Temp asks, "Is Clucksten a supplier?" I nod, "They're one of them." Cam then says, "No way of telling where these particular human nuggets came from." I then say will looking at one of the fingers, "There's a lack of bruising on the bone at the incision point." Cam adds, "Removed postmortem. So not torture obviously." "There are symmetrical slice marks. Also, pinching in the center of the bone tissue." Cam asks, "Removed with shears?" I nod as Temp says, "You should do a D.N.A. test, of course. But I'm confident that all four body parts came from Nick Rabin." I nod, "I agree as well."
3rd POV
The next morning everyone was back at work as Venus had brought along her check book and a file of many piglets including one of Angela's pigs. Brennan told her what had happened and agreed with her, but she decided that she would still help Angela and more of the cute pigs. She begins making her way out of the car straight to Angela's workspace. At the same time Wendell enters Angela workspace seeing her working on the computer as he says, "Hey. I got some more data on the bone bruising." Angela turns to him, "Hey. So, I need $1,500." He stops looking at her, "I need about 40,000 to repay student loans. What do you need your money for?" Angela grabs a photo from her desk showing the pig to him, "I need to save this pig." "What, from being made into bacon?" Angela nods, "Yeah." "I love bacon. I love ribs. I love steak. I love meat. I'm a meat eater. I'm not apologetic about it." Angela tires again to persuade him showing him the picture again, "Look at his face." He does so look at the pig and then her seeing that she really wants to save the pig. Her look reminds him of Venus when she looks at puppies at the pet store. He sighs defeated, "Look, Angela, I'm sorry." Angela sighs in defeat as Wendell then grabs his wallet taking out all the money he had, "Here's, uh, 20, 25- $45? Take it all." He smiles at her kindly, "We'll save your pig." He puts his wallet away wondering if he would have time to see and have a talk with Venus since they had both been busy with their work. Hoping that he would be successful today.
But he then see's Angela stand up going over to him and kiss him. He stood there shocked at the act as they separated. Even though it felt nice to kiss a girl, he didn't feel it was right as his mind went to Venus. Angela smiles at him as he says, "Angela... I appreciated it... but I like someone else..." Angela who was aroused since she had been on cellibus for almost 6 months had an urge of intimacy, not really thinking as she says, "It's all right. Once is fine, plus you're not dating this person you like yet. She goes back kissing him more passionately as he begins to push her off as lightly as he could, but it was a bit to late for that.
Venus was entering Angela's workspace as she was looking at the file not looking up as she enters her room as she says, "Hey, Angie. I heard about your pig donation. I was hoping to help your..." When she looked up, she sees Wendell and Angela making out as she froze there shocked causing her to drop the file of different pigs and information about them. Angie and Wendell both freeze separating hearing papers fall onto the ground as they turn seeing a shocked Venus. Wendell begins to panic, seeing Venus there witnessing the two of them kiss. She definitely would have the wrong idea and intentions about him. Venus quickly shakes it off as she quickly bends down picking up the paperwork not looking at them as she says, "S-sorry... I didn't know that the two of you were... I-I just wanted to... I-I... uh..." She picks up everything putting it down on a table as she places her checkbook on the table, "Just put the amount you need Angie and see which one else you want to save..." Wendell goes over to Venus wanting to explain as he was about to grab her hand, she flinches away quickly from him. He feels hurt, but she feels betrayed and used as she holds her hand close to her giving the two her best smile. But what they see was nothing more of a broken smile, something the two never seen before from Venus as she says, "Uh... Sorry, again for disturbing you two... I'll come back later Angie.... I-I have to go..." She quickly turns away walking out of the office as fast as she can as Wendell says, "Venus! Wait! Let me explain!" But she was no longer there when he looked outside of the lab not spotting her.
He sighs going back inside sitting down on the couch defeated and angry at himself for not stopping Angela sooner or stopping Venus so he could explain to her. He could've done many things, but instead he most likely just ruined a relationship the two had. He lay his heads on his hands trying to come up with something to reconcile with Venus. Angela was standing their taking in everything that she saw and comes to a conclusion as she starts feeling guilt for the two. But to confirm she goes over the couch and sit down next to Wendell as she asks, "The person that you like, is it Venus?" Wendell looks at her briefly as he nods, "Yeah..." Angela looks at him very apologetically, "Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry Wendell. I didn't know what was coming over me... I'm so sorry... If I knew, you were talking about Venus I would've have stopped right away. But I was blinded... I'm so sorry..." Wendell looks at her seeing how she felt that she messed up badly as he sighs, "It's all right... I'm at fault here too. I should've been clearer on who I liked and pushed you away sooner." He stands up, "I need to look for her and explain what happened also hoping that she could forgive me." Angela nods sadly as he leaves to find Venus.
