~burning down the house - talking heads~

BREAKING INTO THE POLICE STATION WAS NERVE WRACKING, to say the least. Well, it was for Jonathan and Nancy, anyway. Jennifer stayed in the drivers seat of the car in case the trio needed a quick getaway.

They didn't.

When the other two returned to the car, Jonathan forced Jennifer to leave the drivers seat before taking off and heading towards the Byers house. They skidded to a stop in front of the house, resulting in Jen to grab onto the back of Nancys seat.

"Oh yeah, but you're the better driver," she muttered, rolling her eyes.

Jonathan ignored her comment before getting out of the car and heading to the trunk. Nancy handed her the fire extinguisher, and together, the three hauled everything into the house.

First, they started with the Christmas lights. They had to put the covers back on each light because, for some reason, they had been taken off.

Jennifer didn't know how they came up with the plan, but they somehow devised a perfect one on how to take down the demogorgon. It took a while to set up, but when it finally was, Jennifer couldn't help but smile.

"Are we ready?" she asked, watching her two friends re-enter the living room.

The other two glanced at each other before nodding. Jonathan left Nancys side and grabbed three steak knives from the kitchen, handing one to each girl.

"Remember-,"

"Straight into Wills room. And-," Nancy started.

"Don't step on the trap," Jen finished.

"Wait for the yo-yo to move..."

"Then-," Jonathan flicked open his lighter, directing both girls attention to the flame. "All right,"

"Ready?" he asked, glancing between Nancy and Jen.

"Ready," Nancy confirmed.

Jonathan looked at Jen, his eyebrows raised.

"Ready," she nodded, her eyebrows furrowed in anticipation.

At this, all three teens brought the knives to their hands, Jens shaking a little more than the other two.

"On three," Jonathan decided. "One... two... Look, you don't have to do this-,"

"Jonathan, stop talking," Nancy shook her head, closing her eyes slightly.

"I'm just saying, you guys don't have to-,"

"Three!" Jen exclaimed, squeezing her eyes shut and dragging the knife across her hand.

Immediately, the cut started to burn. She dropped the knife and grabbed the cut with her other hand, trying anything to stop the pain.

"Fuck!" she exclaimed, ignoring the blood dripping from her hand. "Shit! Jonathan my blood is getting on your carpet!"

Jonathan cursed before speeding down the hallway to the bathroom. He returned with a roll of bandaging, trying to avoid getting his own blood on any of it. He grabbed ahold of Jens hand and wrapped it tightly.

"Nance," he called, holding up the roll while looking at Nancy.

Jennifer left the room as the other two tended to their wounds. She couldn't help but feel she was third-wheeling in this whole monster-killing thing. Nancy and Jonathan were always sharing extra glances and words with each other, it was hard not to notice.

Jen ran her other hand under the tap, trying to rub off as much of the blood as she could. Her head snapped up from the sink, however, when loud bangs began to sound from the door. She immediately started for the door, glancing at the two on the couch.

"I'll get it," she muttered.

Her hand was halfway to the doorknob when it froze at the sound of the voice on the other side.

"Jonathan! Are you there, man?"

"Is that Steve?" Jen whispered, looking towards Jonathan and Nancy in astonishment.

"It's- It's Steve!" Steve yelled, confirming Jen's theory. "Listen, I just want to talk!"

Jennifer unlocked the door and opened it just enough to see Steve's face.

"Steve. Listen to me," she snapped, her voice anything but nice.

"Hey- Jen, what?"

"You need to leave," Jennifer said, her eyes wide. "Now,"

"No, no, I'm not trying to start anything, okay?" Steve pleaded, tapping the door.

"I don't give a shit, Steve," Jen spat. "You need to leave,"

"No, no, no! Listen, I- I- I messed up, okay?! I messed up- I messed up... Okay?" Steve was almost hysterical. He was desperate to get into the house. "Really. Please. I just wanna make things right. Okay? Please. Plea-,"

Steve stopped talking when he caught sight of Jennifer's hand. Jen followed his eyes and cursed internally when she noticed exactly what he was looking at.

"Wh- Hey, what happened to your hand?" he asked, reaching out. "Is that blood?"

Jennifer retracted her hand and glanced down at her front, noticing how her once white shirt was now covered in splatters of blood.

"Nothing!" she exclaimed, shaking her head. "It was an accident,"

"No, Jen, what's going on?" Steve asked, his voice filled with concern.

"Steve, it's nothing!" Jen snapped.

"Wait, wait. Did he do this to you?" Steve asked, his voice suddenly full of anger.

"No!" Jen snapped. "No!"

Steve started to push his way into the house despite Jens protests. She planted her feet and tried to push the door back, but Steve was stronger. He pushed the door completely open and burst into the room, his brows furrowing as he did so.

"What is- What the-?"

Jonathan rushed forward and pushed Steve backward aggressively, his anger from earlier obviously still just as strong.

"You need to get out of here!" he snapped.

"Hey, wait- whoa. What is all-?"

"Listen to me! I'm not asking you, I'm telling you!"

"What is that smell? Is that gasoline?!" Steve exclaimed, his voice frantic.

A gun cocked and Jen spun around to see Nancy pointing her gun straight at Steve's head.

"Steve, get out!" she exclaimed.

Steve turned and his eyes widened when he saw Nancy pointing the gun at him.

"Wait- What? WHAT IS GOING ON?" he yelled frantically, throwing his hands in the air.

"You have five seconds to get out of here!" Nancy decided, her voice steady.

"Okay, is this a joke? Stop! Put the gun down!" Steve had his hands out in front of him, trying anything to try and understand the situation.

"I'm doing this for you,"

Suddenly, the Christmas lights began to flicker violently, causing Jen to tear her eyes off of the scene before her and look around the room with wide eyes.

"Guys," she mumbled, turning in circles.

"Three. Two-,"

"NO, NO, NO! NO, NO!"

"GUYS!"

Jonathan and Nancy finally looked at the girl, their eyes wide.

"THE LIGHTS!"

"It's here," Jonathan confirmed, grabbing his nailed bat from the coffee table.

Jennifer reached over her shoulder and retrieved her machete from the holster that was placed on her back. She backed up, her back colliding with Nancy and Jonathan's as she did so.

"Where is it?" Nancy asked nervously, her gun still in her hands.

"Where is what? WHOA! Easy with that!"

Steve was on the verge of a panic attack. He was looking at Jen pleadingly, hoping she would tell him what's going on.

"Where is it?" Jennifer asked, turning in circles.

"I don't know!" Jonathan exclaimed, doing the same. "I don't see it!"

"Where is WHAT?" Steve yelled, trying to keep his composure. "HELLOOO? WILL SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THE HELL IS GOING-,"

Steve was cut off by a loud bang followed by a few growls. All four teens turned to look at the roof. It was sinking down slowly and something was writhing around inside.

Nancy raised her gun and started firing shot after shot at the thing, trying anything to try and kill it.

"NO!" Jonathan yelled, grabbing Nancy and throwing her into Jennifer. "GO! GO! RUN! GO!"

Jennifer grabbed onto Steve's wrist as she sprinted after Jonathan down the hallway, jumping over the trap when it appeared at her feet.

"JUMP!" she yelled over her shoulder.

"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!" Steve yelled, almost knocking Jen down as he desperately tried to get into Wills bedroom. "Jesus! Jesus! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT? WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?"

"Shut up!" the other three yelled in sync.

Jennifer pushed Steve behind her and raised her machete, staring at the door intently. Jonathan flicked open his lighter and Nancy pointed her gun at the door.

"What's it doing?" Nancy asked, referring to the low growling that they could hear on the other side of the door.

"I don't know," Jonathan mumbled.

Jennifer readjusted her grip on her machete and shuffled her feet nervously. Suddenly, the lights stopped flickering and the noises behind the door ceased. Nancy and Jonathan glanced at each other, both of their faces nervous.

"Do you hear anything?" Nancy asked.

Jonathan flicked his lighter closed and shook his head. "No,"

Jen lowered her machete before following Nancy and Jonathan towards the door. Jonathan opened it cautiously before stepping into the hallway, the other three right behind him.

They made their way down the hallway, their ears strained in case the monster decided to make a comeback. When they turned the corner and still saw nothing, Jennifer slid her machete back into its holster.

"This is crazy," Steve mumbled, eyes wide. "This is crazy! This is crazy. THIS IS CRAZY!"

He lunged forward and grabbed onto the house phone before starting to dial something. Jennifer stomped over to the boy and grabbed the phone, slamming it onto the ground as she did so.

"What are you do- What are you doing? Are you insane?" Steve cried, his eyes wide.

"It's going to come back!" Jen yelled. "So you need to leave. Right now!"

Steve looked at the girl a moment, his lip practically quivering as he did so.

"Jen- Jennifer, you can't- you can't stay here!" he exclaimed desperately.

Nancy furrowed her eyebrows while watching the scene. Why was Steve more worried about her best friends safety rather than her own?

"Steve! You need to leave!" Jennifer repeated, pulling her arm from his grasp.

Steve looked to Nancy and Jonathan for a second longer before pulling his lips into a straight line and running out of the house. Jennifer slammed the door behind him and walked back into the living room, ignoring the look Nancy was giving her.

Almost immediately, the lights started to flicker again. Jen pulled her machete back out and turned so that her back was against Nancy's and Jonathan's.

"Where is it?" Nancy cried.

"Come on. Come on, you son of a bitch," Jonathan seethed.

"Come and get us you fuck!" Jennifer yelled, holding onto her machete so tight that her knuckles began to turn white.

"You see it?"

"No,"

"No!"

"Come on! Come on!"

Suddenly, the lights went out, leaving the three in complete darkness. A low growl sounded and Jennifer turned to see the monster standing straight behind Jonathan.

"JONATHAN!" Nancy screamed, obviously seeing the monster as well.

Before he could do anything, however, the demogorgon had leapt on him, knocking him to the ground with a shout.

"Shit! Jonathan!" Jennifer exclaimed.

Nancy's eyes were wide as she raised her gun and began shooting the thing, causing it to lift its head and look at her while opening its flower-like mouth.

"Go to hell, you son of a bitch!" she yelled.

But, there were only so many bullets in her gun. And, soon, she ran out. Her eyes widened in fear when the gun would no longer shoot and she looked up at the monster in terror. Without hesitating, Jennifer pushed Nancy out of the way and swung her machete at the monster, slicing a part of its mouth clean off.

The monster let out an enraged roar, leaving Jonathan completely alone and pursuing Jen. She swung at it again and made contact with its shoulder. When she tried to pull away, however, her hands slipped from the handle of the machete and it stuck in the monsters skin, leaving her weaponless.

"Shit!" she exclaimed, her eyes wide.

Jennifer backed herself into the corner, not taking her eyes off of the terrifying sight in front of her. She turned her head to the side and squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the painful death that was sure to come.

But, it didn't.

Instead, the demogorgon was turned away from Jen by none other than Steve Harrington, who was now wielding Jonathan's bat.

"Steve!" Jen exclaimed in astonishment.

While the monster was distracted, Jennifer reached forward and grabbed her machete before it would be gone forever.

Steve was kicking the monsters ass. He spun the bat in his hands and swung it at its head with a grunt. He was pushing it further into the hallway and closer to the bear trap. With one final swing, the monster stepped back and into the trap with a roar.

"HE'S IN THE TRAP!" Jonathan yelled.

"HE'S STUCK!" Jennifer added, noticing how much the monster was struggling.

"JONATHAN, NOW!" Nancy exclaimed.

Jonathan ran into the hallway and threw his lighter onto the gasoline-soaked carpet. Immediately, the room erupted into flames, eliciting a pain-filled roar from the monster.

Steve pushed Jen behind him slightly, raising his arm to shield his face from the intense flames. After a few seconds, Jonathan ran into the living room and grabbed the fire extinguisher that they had stolen from the police station. He put out the fire before it could completely burn down the house.

All four teens started coughing as the fire turned to smoke. When it finally cleared, Jennifer furrowed her eyebrows at the empty trap that sat before them.

"Where'd it go?" Nancy asked.

"There's no fucking way that thing is still alive," Jennifer muttered, shaking her head.

"No," Jonathan agreed. "It has to be dead,"

The Christmas lights that had recently been off suddenly began to light up. But, it wasn't the same as it was before. It was gentle in a way.

Steve took the initiative and led the group after the lights. He still had his bat raised defensively. Jonathan pushed past him, however, and looked up at the lights mesmerized.

"Mom," he muttered. "Is that you?"

Jonathan watched as the lights began to flicker off. He pushed open the front door and watched as the lamp post outside lit up for a second before dimming once again.

"Where's it going?" Nancy asked.

"I don't think that's the monster," Jonathan shook his head.
