-Venus POV-
We are walking up to the crime scene as Booth tells Temp, "Look, Bones, all I'm saying is that Caroline went to a lot of trouble to get you and Blueberry private visitation with your father, and now you don't want it." "The federal detention facility already has visiting areas." I nod, "That is true sis, but it's behind two-inch glass." Booth nods adding, "I mean, now you'll be able to give your old man, you know, a hug!" "I didn't ask for special treatment, Booth." I then say, "That's because you don't have to, because you are already special!" I give Temp my signature smile as smiles back at me as well. Booth nods adding, "And you are going to tell me... Whoa, what happened to whatever the hell is melted to that steering wheel and... everything else?" I chuckle and start off, "It's female, mid-40s to late 50s." Temp adds, "Pelvis indicates she's given birth." "Hey, Bones, Blueberry, look at that- married, right?" Temp picks up the finger and examines it, "Wedding ring- it's a possibility." Temp then looks at one of the tech guys, "Don't just focus on the ground." She then points up in the trees as we all look up seeing a leg stuck up there.
Temp then asks Booth, "Why do you care about my and Ven relationship with our father, Booth? You were only too happy to arrest him and put him in prison." "All right, look, Bones, you know, it's not about being happy, okay? It's about doing my job." I look at him, "Aren't you just a bit happy catching him?" "Just a bit." I chuckle as Temp then says, "Do we know if it was a bomb that caused the explosion?" I was going to answer as Booth cuts me off, "Well, let's see, the roof is peeled back, and the doors and..." Temp looks at him, "I was asking him." We look to the side and see Marcus popping his head out, "We found explosive residue all over the van and metal fragments in the bushes."
Booth asks, "What is that, a pipe bomb?" I then say, "We can't be really sure on what it is yet Ranger." Marcus nods, "Until the explosive unit gets the van back to the lab." Temp then says, "No, they can't have the van. There are remains seared all over the inside of the vehicle, and they can't be compromised." I look at Marcus, "I have to call and get..." Temp cuts him off, "This van will be brought to the Jeffersonian. Your bomb techs can look at it there." "I'll... make the call?" Booth and I pat Marcus back as I say, "Tell then the Jeffersonian will provide any of the materials you need. I am sorry for her behavior... she is having a rough day today." Booth adds, "That's all right, you go make that call."
Marcus leaves as Booth and I look at Temp, "Bones, come on, you were a little harsh there. Maybe you want to talk it out." I nod as Temp says, "Look, Booth, Ven." We look, "It's a locket." Temp opens it revealing a picture of a girl as Booth says, "Aw, it's... probably her daughter." I then ask, "Who would want to blow up a soccer mom?" We look at each other wondering why?
We are in the lab as the team is collecting evidence and body parts as Angie comes over to us, "Hey, you have a skull for a facial reconstruction?" Zack then says, "Help yourself." Angie looks down and sees the skull in pieces, "Oh, great. Is this all I have to work with? I've always hated puzzles." Temp then says while I undo the steering wheel, "Hodgins, before we take the hands from the wheel, you might want, to check the fingernails for particulates." I finally get the wheel off as Hodgin says, "You know I do." Angie looks at the hands stuck on the wheel, "Oh, my God." Zack then asks, "Shouldn't you wait for the bomb tech before you gather the explosive residue?" I then say, "He is just getting enough to verify his results." Hodgin nods as he gives each other a fist bump as he says, "Remember, he's a government bureaucrat." Angie then says, "Hey, you're a government bureaucrat, babe." "In name only. I am a passionate, dedicated scientist who will not be cowed by authoritarian pressure." Hodgins gets in the Van as I then say, "Sorry Hodgins, you can't get inside the van until the bomb tech comes in." "But..." Cam then comes over to us and says to Hodgins, "Out." He sighs and listens to us as he says, "Fine, I have the fingernails anyway."
I chuckle as Cam asks Angie, "How close are we to ID'ing the victim?" "Well, this is the skull. I'm good, but... I'm not that good." Temp then speaks, "Perhaps you could use these." We look at her as she shows us some body parts, "There's a portion of tongue, hair and... brain matter." I push Temps hand down shaking my head as Angie says, "Okay. If anybody needs me, I'm gonna go throw up, then do some paperwork." I wave her a goodbye as Booth comes over to us with someone as we look over at them, "Okay, this is Special Agent Frost from the bomb unit." Fros then speaks as I make my way over to them, "Booth pulled me out of an important lunch. It took me months to set up that meeting." I go over to great her as I did not notice someone was eyeing at her up and down. "Sorry he did that to you, but it would be our pleasure for you to work with us."
She looks at me and smiles I then go shake her hand, "Hi, I am Dr. Venus the head of the Jeffersonian and will be one of the people who will help you out." She nods, "Nice to meet you Dr. Venus." "Well, the one you will be mostly working with will be Dr. Hodgins." I turn around and see Hodgins looking funny as he says, "Yes, please. What? No. Um, hm? Hodgins." They shake hands as I stand next to Zack looking at him oddly as he continues speaking, "Doc-Doctor. We're... okay?" We watch as Angie walks over to them giving Hodgins an amused face as Frost laughs a bit, "I beg your pardon?" Angie then speaks, "He's Dr. Jack Hodgins. Angela... Montenegro." Zack and I look at each other questioningly and back to them as Angie continues, "I do facial reconstructions. And him." "Mm." "Pleasure to meet you. I'm gonna need you to recover all metallic particulates, then I'm gonna need a chemical tray with..." Hodgin, Frost, and I say it at the same time withouth thinking about it, "...aqueous buffer solution." I look at the two questionably as they laugh as Hodgins says, "Yeah, I-I know." I then say, "You should also want to preform capillary electrophoresis." Hodgin nods as Frost asks, "You can do that?" Hodgin nods even more, "Oh, yeah." I look to behind them as Angie clears her throat loudly as he then says, "And it will save time, so Angela and I can have dinner alone." I try to hold in my laughter as Angie hums and leaves."
Booth comes over to us and says, "License plate was destroyed but we traced the VIN number on the van- it was, uh, registered to Jermey Nash in Culpeper, Virginia." We walk to the table where the victims' items were placed as we look at the file photo. Temp then says, "He looks familiar." Booth looks at all of the items as, "Man, our victim was traveling with a lot of stuff: clothes, personal items." Temp adds, "Photo album. Most of the pictures were burned, but the man in this photo could be Nash." We look at the photo as Cam comes over to us, "She packed herself up, keepsakes and all, and took off in a van? It looks like Mrs. Nash was leaving Mr. Nash." Booth groans, "Oh, God, I hate domestic cases. All right, so let's go talk to the husband" I nod about to follow Booth when Temp says, "I can't. I'm seeing my father." Booth looks at her wide eyes, "Now?" "You and Caroline went to a lot of trouble setting this up. I would hate to appear ungrateful. Are you coming with me Ven?" I shake my head, "I already went to see him when they got permission... Oh, I bought him some slippers he asked for. I left it in your office, could you take it to him?" "Sure." She leaves as Booth says, "But... Blueberry and I will go talk to, um... the husband ourselves." I pat Booths back, "At least she is taking the offer you gave us."
We were talking to the husband as we told him the news as he asks, "A bomb?" I nod as Booth says, "Where you and your wife having any problems?" "Wha-What kind of problems?" "Well, she was traveling with a lot of personal stuff. Photo albums, and more clothes..." "That stuff was for Celia's new dorm room. She was bringing her clothes, things to help decorate... You're FBI, for God sakes! You have no idea who did this? What is this, your first case?" I then say, "Mr. Nash, please relax. Okay? We are just here to help, Mr. Nash, that's all." "How do I tell Celia? How do I... tell my daughter?" I look at Booth as we sympathies with him.
We get back to the lab as Temp meet us there as Booth says, "Nash is going to pick up his kid, tell her in person. I mean, I don't know how you do that. Tell your kid that your mother just got blown up?" I sigh and nod as Temp says, "I would think a direct approach would be best." "What, as opposed to what, sugarcoating it? 'Hey, what do you say we go to the park? Oh, and by the way, your mom just got blown up'? How's your dad? You haven't mentioned him." I look at Temp wanting to know as well as she says, "Apparently, his feet hurt." I then say, "I will look for some socks that will help." Booth then says, "You know, I mean his spirits." Temp says, "Well, he's a con man, Booth. He's always cheerful." "What? That's it?" "Well, it's not like Ven and I really had a father. Max was absent for years." "Well, here's what I know. I know that Nash girl would give anything to spend one more day with her mother. I'm sure you'd feel the same way if something happened to your father." I nod, "He is right Temp, now is the opportunity to be able to spend time with our dad before anything could happen."
We then hear Hodgin coming up to us, "I confirmed triphenylmethane dye and iron sulfate imbedded in the manubrium and the flesh. Both are found in ballpoint ink." Booth claps his hands figuring it out, "Ah. It's a homemade tattoo." "Angela's working on recreating the design." We then go over to Angie as we watch the computer do it's work as she says, "The tattoo appears to have been crudely executed." Booth then ask, "Hmm. You mean like a prison tat?" Cam then says, "No record of her being in prison." Hodgins then say, "In Russia, prisoners make tattoo ink by burning the heel of a shoe and mixing it with soot and urine." I then say, "This was a ballpoint pen rigged with a sewing needle pushed down so deep it penetrated her periosteum or more simply bone." Cam then says, "Doesn't seem like a very soccer mom thing to do."
Angie then finally was getting something, "And... here we go." We looked at it as Cam says, "An inverted pentagram? Devil worship." Hodgin adds, "Mom had a little thing going on the side with Satan? Oh, the burbs." Angie adds, "There is a design in the center that I can't quite get." Hodgin then inventiveness, "Wait. Wait, wait. Is that a fist?" Temp asks, "Fist?" I nod, "It's a fist." Angie nods, "Yeah. Oh, my God, it is a fist." "So she wasn't Satan's old lady. She was in the NLA." Angie asks, "The NLA?" I then answer, "National Liberation Army. Student radicals in the '70s. Thought they could change the world. Set off bombs in Army recruiting offices, torched cop cars." Booth nods, "Yeah, real visionaries. They also shot and killed a cop in '75."
Hodgin then says, "That was the burglary. They broke into the house of a defense contractor to rip off his safe. Said it was the people's money. Here. June Harris and her boyfriend, Neal Watkins, were charged with the murder but never found." Booth then says, "FBI's been looking for them for 30 years." Cam adds, "And there they are." Angie adds, "And our victim? It's the same woman." Temp then says, "So our soccer mom was a killer."
Caroline came over to discuss about the case as she says, "People, please tell me that all your fancy-ass equipment is wrong." She comes up the platform triggering the alarm. I laugh a bit as I give the guard an okay sign that lets them know that she was fine coming up here. Temp then says to her, "You are not supposed to be up here." "Booth can shoot me later. This cannot be June Harris." "But the dentals match. Angela's reconstruction matches." Booth adds, "Amy Nash was June Harris." Caroline then says, "Porquoi moi? She couldn't have waited four days to turn herself into a charcoal briquette?" I was confused as Temp asks, "I don't understand?" I then ask, "Caroline, what's going on? You're not here to just visit me." "June Harris was turning herself in. I arranged with her attorney for the surrender. He was going to deliver her on Thursday after she said good-bye to her family."
Temp asks, "What was the deal?" "Nine years." Booth asks, "Nine years for killing a cop?" "For turning herself in and laying this all to rest, and since she still maintained her innocence, this was going to be a tough case to prosecute." "Sam Reilly was the lead on this case for 30 years. He was okay for nine years?" "He doesn't know. Part of the deal. He wasn't to be consulted." "Well, you know what? It's okay to tell him now. I know Sam. He deserves that much after 30 years." "Up to you. You're the lead now, Cherie. You should bring in Huntzinger. He was her attorney. He might know something." Hodgins then comes in, "I love Huntzinger. Real old-time leftie. Worked the Chicago Seven trial. Sued Nixon, the CIA, Bush..." Booth nods, "Okay, that's great- let's get out of here before Hodgins gives him the pinko medal of honor." Booth then asks us, "Are you both coming?" I shake my head, "Not this time Ranger." Temp says, "I can't. Zack and I have to pull the rest of the sharpnel for the bomb tech, and Ven and I have to buy some socks for our dad." Caroline grabs Booth's arm, "Leave them be, Cherie. Absence makes the heart grow fonder." I chuckle as I wave the two good bye.
Temp and I are at the prison to see dad. We gave him the socks as he puts them on and says, "Nice and soft. I'll be the best dressed on cell block eight. Thanks." I smile as Temp just said sure. She wasn't very amused... well neither am I but there really isn't anything to do than smile. Dad looks at us, "Girls... I'm sorry." Temp asks, "For what?" He sighs, "For... For being such a disappointed as a father. You both deserve better." My smile dropped a bit as he then continues, "And I should have told you sooner." I wasn't sure what to say as he asks, "Well, that's it? Nothing?" Temp was the one to answer, "Well, what were you expecting? I agree with you." "I was expecting some tears, or a hug or something. I did apologize. That's-That's what you wanted, isn't it?" "Well, you didn't mean it?" "Of course I mean it. Listen, under any objective standard, you have a horrible human being for a father, but I-I'm trying to move on. I got caught so that I could be with you both. I was hoping you'd meet me halfway." Temp then says, "We're here, aren't we?"
To cut the tension between the two I go into Temps bag and take out shampoo. "Here dad, we got you shampoo, the soap isn't good for your hair..." "Oh, nice. I... I don't want to smell too good. That can be a problem around here." We all smile and laugh as he then says, "There. See? It's better. Thanks." We gave him a small smile, "No problem, dad." He sighs and adds, "So, the prosecutor's going to want to talk to you both about me. It wouldn't hurt if you, uh, had some good things to say about your old man. Might even offer to testify on my behalf." I nod a bit not sure if I could do it as Temp asks, "Is that why you finally apologized?" I looked at her as he asks, "What?" "To use us? Maybe you'd like us to alter evidence now. That way I could join the family business." I looked at her surprised that she was thinking that she was like the rest of the family who has done something bad as dad says, "How can you think that?" "I don't know, Max. Maybe because I seem to pass in and out of your life when it's most convenient. Maybe because you built a whole career using your considerable charm to manipulate people." Temp was standing up hurriedly as I follow. Dad then says, "Listen, I know that it's hard to trust me, I know, and it's going to take some time to fix things, but we can..." "No! No! Some things break, and you can't put them back together again. That's just the way it is. We were fine on our own, Max, we were just fine." Temp goes out of the door as Dad says, "Wait. Please."
I stay behind for a bit as I look at Dad, "It-It will take time... But she will do what she thinks it's best. She doesn't show it, but she's upset because she loves you and she doesn't know how to handle with that..." He looks at me and nods, "How about you?" I look at him, "Are you going to leave us again?" I look at him in the eyes as he says with confidence, "No, I am not." He looked certain and I could see that he wasn't lying. I close my eyes a bit and recall what mom said to us on the video. I finally decided what I needed to do, "I believe you... and I am going to put my trust into you." He smiles as I also give him a small smile, "I need to go with Temp, we came here together." He nods as he stands up and we hugged. Before I walk out of the door I say, "I see what we could do about the prosecutor's..." He nods as I leave to meet Temp outside.
We make it back to the FBI headquarters with Booth as Agent Reilly speaks, "Does not make any sense. The van was rigged to blow up, why shoot her?" I shrug as Temp says, "Well, until we see what ballistics determines, it's absurd to speculate." "Speculating is kind of what we do here." I chuckle as Booth says, "Listen, Danny Valenti is a cop. June Harris murdered his father. He has a gun." "He's a good kid, Booth. He didn't do it." Temp adds, "But that is meaningless speculation." "Is she really necessary?" Booth says, "She's my partner." I say, "She's my sister. We come as a package." Temp adds, "Mentors often feel threatened when their students surpass them." "Bones!" "Well, it's true, Booth. Change can be difficult to accept whether it comes in the form of a revolutionary or the simple passage of time." I try not to laugh as Agent Reilly says, "If she were a guy, I'd deck her." Booth quickly turns her around as she keeps on speaking, "You know, that distinction is no longer necessary, but I wouldn't recommend it." Booth pushes them through the door and says, "Go, Sam. Thank you." I chuckle a bit, "I wish you luck in there Ranger, you have a handful." He sighs, "Yes... yes I do."
