-Venus POV-
It has been two years since I found my sister and started working at the Jeffersonian. It's seemed that I forgot to tell them that I was their boss, but I kept that to myself wanting to keep low and see what type of people work here. I make sure everyone is doing their jobs and I would help any of them out when they need. I also started living with Temp two years ago. When both Temp and Angela convinced me to stay there just in case, I have an episode I would have someone close by to help me. I did have a few episodes the past 2 years, but no one at worked noticed as I go to my relaxing room Dr. Goodman provided for me, where I can ride out my panic attacks. Booth and I have also gotten close. He will take me with him to group conferences where there are other vets like us and we would talk through our problems together. But as far as I know only Temp, Angie, Dr. Goodman and Booth know about my past and I would like to keep it that way for now.
Right now, I am running in the airport with Angie. "We're late Angie." I try to go up to the billboard that shows the time of plane arrivals, but they are all glitching out. "Hey Angie, this board is broken." Angie starts speaking up trying to get anyone's attention as I look for someone who works there. "Uh, did anybody meet the flight from Guatemala? Aviateca Airlines? What gate?" I then spotted a worker "Hey Angie, look there is someone that works here." "Good eye sweetie, let's go we are late?" We jogged up to the worker and Angie takes the lead to ask "Excuse me, uh ... you have a computer glitch at the arrivals board."
He doesn't answer so I speak up. "Hello sir, excuse me ..." He then put his finger up to stop me from speaking. "He's not listening Angie, maybe we should look for ..." Before I could finish my sentence Angie opened her shirt revealing her corset. I quickly cover my eyes blushing not expecting her to do that, I then look up seeing that the worker was now paying attention. Angie just sighs, "Yea. Hi. The flight from Guatemala." We then hear a familiar voice that I missed for two months. "Tell me you tried 'excuse me' first." We both turned excitedly seeing Temp "Honey. Yes, I did; welcome home." "Yes, she is right sis. I just didn't expect her to flash to the both of us." We all hugged together. "Are you exhausted sis? Here let me carry your bag."
Brennan hands me her bag as I carefully caring it as I know what was inside as Angie speaks up. "Yea, was Guatemala awful, honey? Was it horribly backward?" "And yet I was never reduced to flashing my boobs for information." I chuckle at her comeback "Me either, if it was that easy, I would have become first commander then second." Angie gasps "First of all Ven you don't copy what I do. If you can't drink yet, then you are still young to learn my wonderous ways. And second, flash them for any fun reasons?" Temp nodded at this "I was literally neck-deep in a mass grave. Not romantic." I slowed down as I noticed someone following us as Angie was speaking. "You know, diving head-first in a pit of cadavers is no way to handle a messy break-up." "Angela, nothing Pete and I ever did was messy." "Then you were not doing the right thing."
I quickly pulled both Angie and Temp behind me handing the bag back to her as I confronted the person following us. "Sir, why are you following us?" He tried to grab Temps arm, but I quickly reacted and grabbed his arm twisting it before he touched her and punched his stomach making him grunt. I then flipped him over onto his knees putting him in a tight headlock with one arm, while the other was still twisting his other arm behind his back. Angie started freaking out a bit "Attack! Security! Hello! Who runs this airport? Kick his ass Ven." The man was struggling trying to get out of the head lock and regain his breath, but I wasn't having any of it. Until a officer pulled out his gun and aimed it at me. "Step back now!" Temp then started to intervene "He tried to attack me. She was only trying to protect me." The Man started to chock out slowly "I ... I'm ... Home..land..Security!" Three more officers surrounded us with their guns pointing at me. I quickly let go saying a quite sorry to the man as Angie tries to defuse the situation. "Oh ... little misunderstanding here." Temp speaks up as I put my hands up "You can put away your guns." as I looked down a bit sheepishly not wanting to look at the Homeland Security guy. "What, is she in charge now? No, I'll tell you when you can lower your weapons. Hand over the bag." Temp starts getting a bit angry that they were still pointing their guns at her sister. "Is that what this is about?" She sighs and quickly hands her bag over to him. He opens it finding a skull, scaring him.
The officers go up to us and handcuff me while they grabbed Temps arm. We are then escorted into a room where we are being interrogated. I stayed quiet the whole-time letting Temp do the talking, as I did not feel comfortable being handcuffed tightly behind my back. "I am Dr. Temperance Brennan, and she is Dr. Venus Brennan. I've been in Guatemala for two months, identifying victims of genocide, including the skull." "Most people in this situation, what they do is they sweat it, like your sister right there." "Guatemala? Genocide? How are you scary after that? And she doesn't feel comfortable being restrained, so take the cuffs off her." "I won't be taking off the cuffs on her, she attacked me and almost killed me. Also, you know who doesn't sweat it? Sociopaths." "First of all, she was just protecting me. All she knew was that you could've been a threat to us, so she reacted and did what instincts told her to do and it was to protect me and Angie. Also, I am not a sociopath. I'm an anthropologist at the Jeffersonian and Venus is ... You never told me what you did at the Jeffersonian Ven."
"Oh... Sorry Temp. I am second head director of the Jeffersonian." I looked up a bit sheepishly at her, as she nods her head, pleased with my job. The agent speaks up again, "Who works for the FBI. Which I'd maybe believe if you had ID that did more than allowed you access to the cafeteria. You are illegally transporting human remains, ma'am." I look to the side seeing Booth entering threw the door listening what the agent was saying to us. "And she assaulted a Homeland Security agent, so I don't care if she isn't feeling comfortable being handcuffed right now." Booth furrowed his brows a bit processing what the agent just said as Temp retaliates back. "Look, I'm sorry if she embarrassed you in front of your friends, but next time, you should identify yourself before trying to attack me. So, take the cuffs of her as you can see, she really doesn't feel comfortable being cuffed!"
Booth looks over at me seeing that I was slowly going into an episode so he quickly speaks up. "FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, Major Crime Investigation, DC. I want you to uncuff her right now!" One of the officers quickly uncuffs me quickly. Once off I started to feel much better as I rub my wrists from the pain as Booth continues. "Bones and Blueberry identifies bodies for us." Temp and I speak up at the same time. "Thanks Ranger" "Don't call me Bones. And I do more than identify." Booth takes out Temps book "She also writes books." I just nod at this. The agent looks at it and looks up at Booth. "Fine. They're all yours." "Great. Let's grab your skull, and let's vamoose." I nod ready to leave as Temp speaks up "What, that's it? 'They're all yours'? Why did you stop us?" "What does it matter? You're free to go. Let's just grab your bags -- click, click, cling, cling." "Ya, sis Ranger is right let's just go." "You set us up. You got a hold-for-questioning request from the FBI, didn't you?" The agent just looks at Booth as he also looks away trying to avoid Temps eyes. "I love this book." The agent hands back the book and we make our way out.
-No Ones POV-
Venus was sitting in the back seat, while Temp and Booth are in the front having a brief argument. "That's the best you can do?" "What?" "Getting Homeland Security to snatch us so you can stage a fake rescue?" I piped in "That was a good idea Ranger, but next time could you let them know not to put handcuffs on me. They really hurt." "Sorry Blueberry it won't happen next time. But at least I picked you both up at the airport, huh? Come on at least Blueberry liked the idea. I mean, I went through the appropriate channels, but your assistant there, he stone walled me." "Yeah, well, after the last case, I told Zack never, ever to put you through. He's a good assistant. You can let us out anywhere along here." "All right, listen, a decomposed corpse was found this morning at Arlington National Cemetery." "Arlington National Cemetery is full of decomposed corpses. It's a cemetery." "Wait hold on sis, maybe Ranger has something more to say about this case." "Thank you, Blueberry. This one is your guy's type of corpse -- it wasn't in a casket." "If you drive one more block. I'm screaming 'kidnap' out the window." "You know what? I'm trying to mend bridges here." "Pull over."
Booth pulls over to the side as we all get out of the car. I just keep on listening to their conversation. "We're going home." "Great. Could we ... Look, could we just skip this part?" "I find you very condescending" "Me? I'm condescending? I'm not the one who's got to mention that she's got a doctorate every five minutes." "I am the one with a doctorate." "Yeah, well you know what? I'm the one with the badge and the gun, huh? You know, you're not the only forensic anthropologist in town. Blueberry here is one as well." "Yea, your right. But I am the best one, no offence Ven." "Don't worry sis non taken. But how about coming up with an agreement." They both stopped walking causing me to do the same as they looked at me. "What? Did I say something wrong?" "No Ven, you are right. I want full participation in the case." "Fine." "Not just lab work; everything." "What? You want me to spit in my hand? We're Scully and Mulder." "I don't know what that means."
"Sis, it's an olive branch. But could I also be a part of this agreement. I won't always go with you, but it could put you a bit more at ease if I accompany with you both Ranger. It will also put me at ease knowing that you both are with me, so I can protect you both and you could use my skills during my time in the military." I look at Booth with pleading eyes. "Fine, I can't say no to you Blueberry. But I need to get permission from your boss as well, got it. If I get a no from them, you can't go with me, got it." We both nod as Temp looks at me. "I give you permission Dr. Brennan to the agreement we made with Ranger." "What are you doing?" Temp then speaks up. "You didn't know that Venus is second head director to the Jeffersonian." "What? No. Let's just get back in the car." "Sorry I forgot to tell you Ranger. But I will be able to convince Boss to let me join you guys." "Yea, Yea. Let's just go." We made it into the car and drove our way to the crime scene.
As they were getting there Venus speaks up. "Oh, just to let you know don't tell anyone about my position at the Jeffersonian, please?" "Why Ven?" "Well, it's easier to monitor everyone when they don't recognize me, and I get to see how they work when they don't feel or see their boss standing close by." "That makes a lot of sense. Alright, I will keep it a secret Ven." "Don't worry blueberry your secret is stuck with me until you feel like telling others." "Thank you. I will eventually tell the others, but I like how we are going about it right now."
We then start getting straight into business with Temp speaking up. "What's the context of the find?" "Routine landscaping-- they drop the level of the pond, one of the workmen thought he saw something." We walk up seeing Zack and I immediately greeted him. "Hey Zackaroon." "Hello Dr. Venus." "Zack, how many times have I said to just call me Venus or Ven for short. You only put Dr. when we are in front of Boss." "Yes, sorry Venus." I smiled at him as Temp comes up from behind me. "Hi, Zack." "This eco-warrior look works for you." "Thanks" "Very action-oriented." "Agent Booth, you remember my assistant, Zack Addy?" "Oh, yeah." I chuckle at Booths irritation. "Don't worry Ranger you got me here." He looks down at me and smile a bit, as Zack speaks up. "How was Guatemala? Dig up lots of massacre victims? Learn a thing or two about machete strikes?" "Zack, I need water samples and temperature readings from the pond." "Right away, Dr. Brennan."
Booth then speaks up. "He's got no sense of discretion, that kid. Typical squint." Temp and Venus looks at Booth confused. "We don't know what that means." "Well, cops get stuck, we bring in people like you. You know -- squints; you know, who squint at things." "Oh, I got it Ranger that's a good one." I high fived Booth as Temp speaks up. "Oh, you mean people with very high IQs and basic reasoning skills?" We looked at her as she walked away. Booth slowly agrees. "Hey Ranger, what type of squint am I?" "Well, you are what I call a unique squint. You're the cool type of squint that gets along with all types of people and squints." "I see, so I get my own title. How about we call it berry squint." "I like that. You are a berry squint."
"Sis, I am going to check up on Zack. You go with Booth and locate the remains." "Alright."
Venus heads over to where Zack was. "It's good seeing you again Zackaroon. I am here to check up on your progress." "Hello again Venus, I am almost done here. I just need two more minutes." "That works with me Zack." She then gets a call from Booth. "Hya Ranger, what can I do for you ... Ya no problem, how fast do you want it all out. Hmmm, let me ask Zackaroo here really quick. Hey Zack, how long do you think it would take to drain out the pond with the pipes here." "It would take about 8 hours." "Thank you. Hey, it's me again, it would take about 8 hours for the water to drain out through the pipes. But I think I could cut it down to 4 hours .... No thank you for this wonderful conversation, your berry squint out Ranger."
She then ends the call with booth inputting a new number on her phone as Zack speaks up. "How are you going to take out all that water in 4 hours." "Patience you must have my young padawan." Zack looked at her in confusion as she calls the number. "Hey Hodgins, do you remember the trucks that you've been wanting to use, but didn't know what to use it on ... how many do we have ... 3 ... We'll I have the greatest news for you. Bring all three of them over at this location I am going to send you in a bit as I got the perfect playground for you to play in today... Roger, see you in a bit." She ends the call with a smile on her face. Zack pipes in again "Trucks? What type of trucks do we have to drain the water in 4 hours." "Much to learn you still have my old padawan. This is just the beginning." "I don't understand what you're trying to say Venus." "Zack, I thought I would ever do this, but I am giving you homework to watch all of Star Wars movies by the end of the week. Do you understand me, Zack?" "Yes, Venus." "Great let's get going and catch up with Temp and Booth." He nods picks up his materials and they make their way back. Waiting for Hodgins to get the job done.
