Y/n pov
My consciousness slowly rose back to normal as my senses became aware of my existence. Awakening from my silent coma. The beeping of a heart monitor matched the rhythm of my heart. I could feel the IV drip in my arm, pumping me of liquid that's doing god knows what, probably keeping me alive.
I forced my heavy eyelids open but barely kept them unlached because they slammed shut before I could even get a glimpse of my surroundings. Trying again I opened my eyes, this time keeping them pinned wide.My body felt numb like I hadn't moved in years. I wriggled my toes and fingers letting the tingling sensation fade away as my body revived from its slumber. I swallowed hard, wincing as pain inflicted on my throat. It felt like sandpaper.
"Hey darling" I heard a recognisable voice speak.
I moved my head to follow the voice and saw Benny sitting in a chair next to my bed. He looked sleep deprived.
Dark, eyebags under his eyes,his hair was messy and unwashed and if I remembered correctly, he was still wearing the same clothes from his chess tournament.
"What happened?" I asked "Benny what's going on?"
"You collapsed, we rushed you to the hospital to get you seen to"
"And?"
"And?"
"What did they say?"
He sighed and rubbed his hand over his temples. He clicked his fingers which was something he usually did when he was either annoyed or nervous.
"Well, it's kind of getting worse but it's nothing to worry about dear"
"You're just saying that to not scare me" I sat up in the bed " if there is something wrong with me I want to know Benny"
I looked into his melancholy eyes, filled with sorrow and distress. I knew he was just trying to save me from all the pain but now wasn't the time for protecting me from the truth. The truth hurts, but lying only makes it more painful later on.
"Your condition is worsening, and the doctors think the only thing to help you is a heart transplant..."
"And there are no donors"
"We will find a donor" Benny held my hand,rubbing his thumb over my knuckles " I don't care what it takes I will make sure you get to live the rest of your life like every other person in this world"
"Benny not everyone gets to live out their lives. Some people die young and that's just how the world works. You need to accept that I might not be here in a couple weeks time. And that's not your fault, or my fault, the doctors fault or anyones fault. That's just how my life has set out to be"
"But it doesn't have to be that way. We can find a way to stop it"
I shook my head in denile. Tears trickling down my face.
"Benny just let it go, let me enjoy the time I have left,please. I don't want to spend the rest of my life rotting in a hospital bed, getting pumped with medicine and monitored"
"No!Don't tell me to give up like all of this is meaningless! I'm not giving up on you!" He voice cracked a little bit as he spoke.
"Alright.But please, just get me out of here"
"...ok, ok" he nodded " I'll get them to discharge you and we'll drive home"
"Home?what about the tournament?"
"Screw the bloody tournament" he spoke " I want to be with you"
I reached foward and sunk into his arms. His shirt quickly became wet with tears but he didn't seem to care. I felt safe in his arms. Like he was protecting me from harm. He could protect me from anything in the world but this. This was something inside me that he couldn't control. As much as he wanted to help we both knew there was nothing he could do exept be there for me.
Benny spoke to the doctors about getting me discharged. They were reluctant to let me considering my current state but he managed to persuade them. Benny agreed that as soon as there was a donor available, he would be informed.
I got changed from the flimsy, little hospital dress they made me wear and got into some comfortable clothes of my own. Benny drove us home and as soon as we got back I ran to our bedroom and flopped onto our bed. Benny just laughed, watching from the door. It was nice to be home, in my own bed.
For the next two weeks me and Benny had the time of our lives. We went on picnics, saw movies, played games, I even convinced him to sing karaoke with me once. He was not pleased about that, but he did it anyway.
I woke to a gorgeous morning. The musical tweeting of birds from outside calmed me.
"Morning"
Benny stroked my hair and rubbed my arm, trying to wake me up. I rolled over in the bed to face him.
"Hi" I smiled.
"Hi"
"It's so early" I moaned " do we have to get up"
"The earlier we get up the more time of day we have to spend"
"Oh, yeah, because the earlier we get up the more time we get to spend together before I..."
He pressed a finger to my lips, stopping me from finishing the sentence.
"Please don't say that darling"
"But it's true"
"Not just for that reason" he smiled.
"What other reason do we have to wake up so early for?"
"You're kidding right? You don't remember?"
I shook ny head and his jaw dropped.
"Happy birthday"
"Oh my god it's my birthday?" I sat up "I totally forgot!"
"Yes well we are doing something special today"
"Oh Benny you don't have to, I wouldn't mind just cuddling in bed with you"
"Oh no, you are having the best birthday of your life mrs, so get your pretty little butt out of bed!"
"I want my morning kiss first!"
"Soo needy!" He chuckled "one"
He gave me a quick little kiss but I pulled him back to kiss him more. He moved me away and gave me a serious look ( I knew he was just playing with me though).
"Hey I said one kiss!" He said "we need to hurry or we'll miss the whole day!"
"Benny it's like seven in the morning!" I laughed.
"Exactly now come on!"
He got out of bed and walked out but walked back in again leaning against the door frame.
"Out. Now"
"No" I folded my arms and pouted.
"You have until the count of three and then I'm getting you out myself"
"Nope" I teased.
"1"
"Still no"
"2"
"I'm not moving!"
"3!"
He jumped into the bed and locked me in his arms, we ended up wrestling, sort of play fighting for a little while.
"Benny!" I giggled "no! Let me go!"
I squealed when he picked me up, throwing me over his shoulder and carrying me away from the bed.
"No!" I whined in defeat.
He sat me on the kitchen bench and gave me a little peck on the cheek before turning his attention to the food.
"Now what would my little birthday queen like for her breakfast?"
"You"
"What!" He looked at me with shock.
"I'm kidding! Ummm, pancakes"
"I was kind of hoping you weren't kidding but pancakes it is"
I watched him as he cooked the breakfast, often showing of by flipping them. When they were done we ate and talked, then we had another wrestle about him trying to get me dressed.
"Put some damn clothes on Y/n!"
"Noo I don't want to!"
"You have to wear clothes if we're gonna go out!"
"What if I don't want to wear clothes!"
In the end he won and I wore my favorite dress(which was also his favourite) it was white and Lacey, it had spaghetti straps that crossed at the back and fell just above my knees.
We walked into the streets hand in hand as we always did and he took me to do lots of things. We went bowling first which was really fun. I found it quite hard though and Benny had to help me do it. It was still fun even though I lost. I didn't really care about winning anyway it was spending time with Benny that ment the most to me. After bowling we got some dinner and Benny spilt his coffie all down his shirt, I couldn't stop laughing! We had to make a quick trip home so he could change and we ended up getting a little naughty in that time...
We had a little walk around the park then Benny took me to a beautiful little restaurant for tea. By the time we finished our food it was dark outside, so we both walked home holding eachother close.
"There are so much more things I want to do with you princess" he sniffled.
"Aww Benny!" I exclaimed "are you crying?"
"No!" He defended " a little..."
"It's ok Benny I'm here"
"There was just so much we hadn't thought about yet, we never talked about weather we wanted kids, or going on a nice little holiday in some hot country, or..."
"Benny stop" I paused him " please don't make this into a sad memory. I want it to be happy. I've had the absolute best day of my life"
"I'm glad you liked it darling" he kissed my head " I love you"
"I love you too"
Then everything went black.
Once again I woke up to the harmonious beeping sound of that dreaded heart monitor. An IV tube in arm, again providing me of fluid. I rose out of my sleeping position straight away, sitting up.
"God damn hospital!" I yelled " I hate this fucking place I don't want to be here!"
"Excuse me ma'am calm down please" a woman told me.
"What's going on!" I demanded from her.
"You will be discharged in a few says ma'am"
"I want to know what's going on!"
"I can't tell you ma'am" she turned to write something down on some paper.
"I'm asking you what's happening!"
"I'm afraid it's not my place to say ma'am"
I slammed my first onto the table next to my bed.
"WILL SOME ONE TELL ME WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS GOING ON!" I bellowed.
"Mrs Watts I need you too relax you will be told soon!" She said her voice raised.
"I want to know now!" I whimpered.
"Mrs Watts?" Another voice said.
A man stood in the doorway, holding papers and files in his hands. His hair was brown, faded grey. His skin wrinkled from age. He had glasses and wore a white robe, so I guessed he was a doctor.
"Yes?" I answered him, eager to find out what was happening.
"You had an operation twenty-four hours ago, a heart transplant" he told me "it was successful"
"A heart transplant?" I repeated "so... I'm ok now?"
"Yes you don't have to worry about any heart issues for now" he said " I recommend that you quit smoking, if you need any help or guidance for it you can seek it here"
"Where's my husband?" I asked him.
"Yes I'm getting to that" he said.
He walked foward to me and held out an envelope in front of me. I took the envelope and ripped it open, grabbing the paper inside.
I read it.
To my sweet wife Y/n,
If you're reading this then your heart transplant was successful. I know you must be very confused so I'll try my best to explain to you. That night we were heading home, you collapsed again. I had no choice but to call an ambulance and get you to the hospital. I know you hate hospitals but I wasn't just going to leave you.
When I got you to the hospital you started fading. Slipping away from me. I couldn't lose you that easily. I wouldn't allow it. I spoke to the doctors and they told me there were no donors. There wasn't anything they could do to help you. But I could. I got tested and surprisingly my blood type is the same as yours and my tissue type is very similar too. You see my darling, I told you I would do whatever it takes to make sure you live out the rest of your life. So I did. I gave you my heart.
Now please don't get upset my dear, I did it purely because I love you more than anything in the world. Because you, deserve to live a long happy life. You deserve to have a family, to grow old, to live. So if that means giving my heart to you then that is what I'll do. It is what i've done.
Just press your hand to your chest, and you will feel my heart beating. Keeping you alive.
