Kinta
"Don't go-" Kinta cried softly as she watched the magicians back walk away from her. "Please-"
But Hisoka said nothing, just kept walking, not even sparing her a second glance as the sound of his heels reverberated in the dark room.
"Hisoka!" Kinta felt glued in place, she couldn't move from her spot on the stone floor as she reached for him helplessly. Hot tears streamed down her face as she watched him. "Just kill me then!"
He stopped, but didn't turn to face her.
"Do it already! I broke my promise to you- so kill me!"
A low chuckle rang in her ears, but the magician still didn't turn to face her.
"Come on! Hisoka!" Kinta screamed, she couldn't be left alone in this awful place. Not again. She'd rather die.
"No."
His voice made her freeze, sending icy chills down her spine. That wasn't Hisoka's voice, the voice was-
"Hisoka?"
He slowly turned around as Kinta felt her eyes go wide with horror. Emerald eyes stared back at her, it was her father, wearing Hisoka's blood soaked clothes. A scream started to build in her chest when she realized he was wearing the skin from her magician's face like a mask.
"Not yet." Arthur laughed maniacally, a massive toothy grin spreading across his face. "I'll let you suffer a little longer."
Kinta woke with a scream, thrashing against strong arms held in her place. The image wouldn't leave her head, she felt like was still trapped in the nightmare as her scream turned to terrified cries.
"I'm right here Kitten~" A familiar voice called her to her, slowly luring her out of her panicked trance. "Your alright~ it's okay~"
"Ah-" She drew a choked breath, her body shaking violently as she tried to get the nightmare fuel out of her head.
A large hand wrapped around the back of her head, tucking her against their chest. "Shh~"
Their voice was soft, soothing and familiar.
Kinta took several, forced, deep breaths as her panic finally started to subside and carefully looked up into Hisoka's worry-filled golden eyes.
"Hisoka-?" Her throat burned as she spoke, like she'd been screaming for hours.
The magician blinked. "You're really awake~?"
Kinta furrowed her brow, her heart still pounding in her chest as she shakily pushed hair out of her face. Her throat felt raw, so she managed a tight nod.
"Finally~" Hisoka sighed with relief, a small smile tugging the corner of his lips. "You've been out for almost two days. You keep having these nightmares and then passing out again as soon as you wake up~"
Kinta blinked tiredly, he didn't let go of her but she slowly looked around the space. Where was she? What happened? She felt dazed and only half awake as she tried to piece together what was going on. This looked like Hisoka's apartment, when did they get here? The last thing she remembered- she was at Heavens Arena.
Everything finally came rushing back to her, the lock down and the Zoldycks finding her. The fight, Hisoka finding her, the fear and panic in his eyes as- as she died. Kinta had died.
"Oh god-" Kinta's voice sounded shaky and raspy as she slowly drugged her gaze back at Hisoka, who still watched her with a worried expression. "Hisoka- I'm-" Her voice wavered as a lump formed in her throat. "I'm sorry!" She desperately tried to blink back tears, but a few escaped anyway.
"What~ what are you talking about~?" Hisoka furrowed his brow, his expression looking even more worried. "Why do you keep saying that~?"
"Because I broke my promise to you!" The tears began to flow freely as she looked up at him, it was normal for her emotions to be heightened after a resurrection. But she really was upset about breaking her promise.
Hisoka's golden eyes went wide. "That's what you're so upset about~?"
She nodded tightly. "I promised I'd never leave you and- and I tried- I really, really tried-" She angrily swiped at the tears streaming down her face.
"Kinta~"
"But I failed!" Kinta sobbed as he tightened his grip on her. "I- I failed you! I'm so sorry, Hisoka!"
He sighed as he tucked her head against his bare chest. "Is~ is that why you were begging me not to leave in your dream~? You think I'm going to discard you because you broke your promise~?"
Kinta nodded tightly against his chest, clinging to him like he'd disappear if she let go. She hated this. She hated showing such weakness in front of him, but the damn tears just wouldn't stop. And as much as she hated to admit it, the thought of Hisoka leaving her because she'd failed him terrified her. The thought of him not loving her anymore because she wasn't enough broke her heart, she'd been keeping that fear buried. So long as she continued to impress him, strived to improve herself and never broke her promise she wouldn't have to worry about it. But now, she'd not only failed him, she'd broken their most important promise too. That fear had been the only thing motivating her to hold on when she'd been bleeding out in his arms, Kinta wasn't afraid of dying, she was afraid of losing Hisoka.
"Oh Kinta~" Hisoka murmured softly. "Now why would I go through all of the trouble of bringing you back, just to discard you afterwards~?"
"You- you've done stranger things-" Kinta sniffled, earning another chuckle from the magician.
"Kitten, look at me~" He didn't wait for her to move, he grasped her face with both hands and forced her head up to look at him. Hisoka's face was bare, he didn't wear any of his makeup and his hair fell down around his eyes. While he wore a gentle smile on his lips, his golden eyes still looked oddly sad. "You won't get rid of me that easily~ like it or not, you are stuck with me." He gently brushed the tears away from her eyes with his thumbs. "You're the queen of my heart, remember~?" A small blush formed on his cheeks as he spoke. But then his eyes darkened and his soft smile fell. "Besides~" his hands dropped away from her face. "I'm the one~ that failed you."
"W-what?" She furrowed her brow as she watched him with wide eyes.
"I always said that nobody would get to you while I was around~ but~" The magician cleared his throat, rocking his head back as he blinked a few times. Was he holding back tears? "I wasn't there for you when you needed me most~" His voice wavered as he spoke.
"Hisoka-" Kinta blinked, her eyes widening as she saw the guilt written across his face. "No, I don't blame you! You couldn't have gotten to me, with all those barriers down and everything else going on- there's no way you could have found me in time."
"If I hadn't been so distracted with my other toys, I would have found you sooner~"
"You trusted me to be able to handle myself. So- I'm the one that failed you-" She bowed her head slightly, she'd lost her fight. It's been a long time since Kinta had lost a fight, and this time it'd cost her her life. "I really underestimated those two, I should have tried harder-"
"No, baby you went against the Zoldycks. And not just their kids, you fought the heads of their household. The most powerful members of the family, even I would have struggled~ it was two on one and the environment you were in~" he cupped her cheek and forced her to look up at him. "The odds were never in your favor~"
Hisoka gently wiped a tear away from her cheek with his thumb, pulling her head in for a gentle kiss on her forehead.
"Tell you what~ how about we both agree to stop blaming ourselves, Hmm~? It's in the past, your back now. That's what's important, okay~?" Hisoka offered her a reassuring smile as he cupped her face in his hands.
Kinta nodded tightly before burying her face in his chest again, letting his familiar scent and steady heartbeat soothe her as he wrapped his arms around her.
