"Where the hell is she?" Derek Morgan stormed into the hospital.

"They just took her into surgery." Hotch told him.

Derek put his hands on top of his head, "Who the hell did this? Was this on us?"

"Just a drive by." JJ answered, "local police think she was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"I don't believe in coincidences." Rossi grumbled.

The team fell silent and waited anxiously for the results. (Y/N) had come into their lives almost 3 years ago, when she had befriended JJ, Penelope, and Prentiss at a bar. The girls grew close fast and through them (Y/N) wound up meeting the rest of the team. She relied on Reid for her reading list and relied on Rossi for good recipes. She relied on the girls for nights out and relied on Hotch to be a voice of reason. She had told them this at one point or another, but couldn't honestly pinpoint what she relied on Derek for. Companionship? Friendship?

And as much as she relied on them, the team relied on her to be a breath of fresh air after every case. To remind them that the world was not evil, there were just evil people in it. To forget about cases even if just for a night. They relied on her to be an escape and she had become just as important as any other member of the team.

     "For (Y/N)?" A doctor asked.

The team stood and Derek came to the front.

"Well, it was touch and go for a while. She's extremely lucky, if she hadn't of moved when she did then I'm not sure she would have made it."

     "Moved?" Hotch asked.

The doctor nodded, "The paramedics said it looked like she anticipated the attack and ducked out of the way, that's why one of the bullets grazed her and the other went into her shoulder. If she hadn't have moved, I'm guessing they would've hit her heart."

"When can we see her?" Morgan demanded.

"She's heavily sedated, but you can go in now, if you'd like. She'll be a little confused, but she should make a full recovery."

"Thanks doc." Rossi said, the team passing him.

Derek sat next to her, picking up her hand and brushing her (Y/H/C) hair out of her face.

All there was to do was to wait.

"The case." Were the first words that came out of (Y/N)'s mouth.

     "Hey, beautiful." Derek smiled.

"It was the case." (Y/N) croaked. "You guys said to look out for a serial shooter, it was them."

     "Them?" Reid asked.

(Y/N) nodded, "Emily said that you guys had a local case, to keep an eye out for a big dark car. I was shopping for Jack's birthday and when I was walking down the street I felt like I was being watched so I stopped in at a cafe and I tried to call, but I..."

"Hey, it's okay." Derek assured, "Who'd you try to call, sweetheart?"

    "You." (Y/N) sobbed.

Guilt swamped him, he had turned his phone off, trying to focus on the case to catch the criminals terrorizing the DC streets. He should've been more careful, taken more precautiouns, (Y/N) fit the profile!

"I went back out when I didn't see anyone, I just wanted to get home. And then a car turned the corner and they..."

"You keep saying them, there was more than one?" Rossi asked.

"I couldn't see their faces, but there was a driver and a shooter and... I think a cameraman?"

Penelope immediately pulled out her laptop and began typing on it furiously.

A nurse knocked on the door, "She needs to rest, you guys."

"Of course." Hotch agreed as the team filed out.

Derek leaned down, kissing her cheek, "I love you sweet girl, sleep well. We'll be right outside."

(Y/N) looked at him with stars in her, (Y/E/C) eyes, "I love you too." She whispered faintly, her cheeks painted with a faint blush, despite her blood loss.

Derek passed by Reid on his way out of the room, "These guys are toast." He grumbled to his friend.

The team settled into the waiting room, determined to stay until (Y/N) was discharged.

Hotch stood in front of them, arms crossed. "I know this is (Y/N), but remember let's not overstep our boundaries."

"We want to help law enforcement any way we can, but this is a conflict of interest." Rossi agreed, taking off his coat and sitting down in the chair.

"Whoa," JJ exclaimed. "You brought your gun?"

     "Yeah." Rossi shrugged.

"Talk about boundaries, it's a hospital." Prentiss scolded.

"And someone tried to kill (Y/N) tonight and we don't know who or where they are."

Hotch grumbled his agreement, taking up his own post with watching the other exit that Rossi wasn't keeping an eye on.

"Thank you guys." Morgan stated, "It means a lot."

Penelope looked up from her computer, "So you love her huh?"

Derek grinned bashfully, "Don't you worry, darling, there's room in my life for the both of you." He winked.

"Well, it's about time you admitted it." Prentiss commented.

"Hey what happened to not profiling each other?"

"Profiling?" JJ scoffed, "Henry asked me at our last get together when you guys were getting married."

     "Shut up."
