I hop down the stairs and turn the corner, the sounds of my parents giggles and talking becoming louder with each step.

Both of them were sitting at the table in the kitchen, a bowl of cereal in front of the. They wore smiles on their faces as they talked about God knows what.

I would really not like to know.

"Good morning, princess." My father said as I sat down in front of them.

"Good morning, how was your night?" I ask them, grabbing the box of Cheerios and pouring it in the empty bowl that was already places in front of me.

My parents share a glance and start to giggle.

"Never mind, don't answer that." I smirk and they giggle again.

"Oh, by the way, James, I need you to take this money to the bank after work. I have a meeting I'll be at until five." My mother said, standing up to grab an envelope off the counter.

"Belle, I can't. I promised one of my patients I'd stay late for an appointment. I won't be home until six." He told her, sitting up in his chair with his eyebrows pointed towards the center of his face.

"Dammit, the bank closes at four. Maybe-"

"I'll do it." I announced, pouring the milk into my bowl.

Both of my parents turn to look at me, their eyes wide.

"Really? You think you can do it?" My father asks, his eyebrows raised.

I roll my eyes. "Yes, dad. I'm not five, I can deposit some money."

"Are you sure?" My mother asks, looking at me cautiously. "Because I'm sure I can-"

"I'm sure, mom." I reassure her, and she sighs

"Alright then, I'll leave the envelope on the counter. Just grab it when you get home from school." She smiles, leaning over to kiss me on the forehead. "Thank you."

"You're welcome." I smiled, eating a spoonful of my cereal.

"Just promise me you'll be careful with it, there's over five-hundred dollars in there." She says and I roll my eyes.

"Yeah yeah, I got it mom."

I waved goodbye to Finn from the doorstep, who waved back from his car before speeding off down the road.

Another eventful day of school.

She said sarcastically.

I rummage through my pocket and find the key to the house and look up to unlock the door. I quickly run instead and grab the envelope off the counter before running back outside. I quickly turn my key and lock the door again, but this time I  notice a yellow sticky note on the door. Furrowing my eyebrows, I read it.

Zara, meet me behind the mall at 4:00, don't tell your parents. -Your grandmother.

My heart almost stopped beating in my chest as I reread the note for the fifth time, making sure what I was seeing was true,

I've never met my grandmother on my mother's side, besides that one time showed up out of nowhere. I didn't even have a chance to talk to her.

As much as I know I shouldn't have, my curiosity got the best of me as I started walking towards in the direction of the mall.

~~~
I turn the corner of the building, my back aching from walking such a long distance with a backpack on my shoulders.
I should have dropped off my backpack.
My legs ache and I'm tired and I have a huge craving for leftover pizza.
Maybe I'll just go home-
"Zara?" A voice said, making me whip my head to the right.
There stood the same women who knocked on the door a couple weeks ago. Her hair was thin and messy as if it hasn't been brushed in a while. She had bags under her eyes and her skin was pale. Her was as skinny as a stick, I could see her bones through her t-shirt. Her appearance was droopy, like she hasn't slept in days.
She smiled, but I didn't like the way it looked on her. Her teeth were yellow and they looked like they were molding in her mouth.
"Aren't you a pretty little thing." She told me, stepping closer to me.
I noticed her pupils were smaller than normal.
"Thanks." I force a smile as I start to feel a little uncomfortable. "Why did you want me to meet you here?"
"Well, I didn't get to meet you until a couple weeks ago. Your mother kept me from you for sixteen years, I missed out on so much of your life." She smiles, placing her hand on my forearm. "And since I was at your house when we met, I figured we should get to know each other at my place."
I furrow my eyebrows. "You live here?"
We were between the mall and a restaurant, so the sunlight was being blocked by the buildings. The was covered in garbage and foreign substances. I peered behind my grandmother and saw a bundle of ratty blankets clumped into a pile. There was one spread out on the ground, nd one folded to sit at the top of the blanket.
"Yes, it's sad isn't it?" She pressed her lips together, turning back to glance at her sleeping setup. "I was fired from my job a couple months ago and I lost all my money."
"How did you lose your money?"
"Oh, that's not very important." She told me, lifting her hand to rub my cheek with her thumb. Her hand was freezing cold so it caused a shiver to run down my spine. "I just don't know what I'm going to do for food. I have no money and no home." She covered her face with her hands as she let out a sob.
I couldn't help but feel sad for her. She was my grandmother and my parents had made no attempt to help her at all. She was homeless and shunned by her family. My family.
I bite my lip as I remember something. I quickly pull my backpack off my shoulders and open a zipper before reaching in and grabbing the envelope.
I extend the envelope towards her. "Here, take this."
She lifts her head from her hands, a few tears running down her cheeks.
"What is it?"
"Money. Over five-hundred dollars, actually. You obviously need it more than we do." I tell her, pressing my lips together.
A smile tigs at her lips as she grabs the envelope from my hand.
"Oh, you're such a wonderful granddaughter." She exclaimed, throwing her fragile arms around me. "I can't thank you enough."
"Just knowing you'll have something to eat tonight is enough for me." I tell her, my own smile on my face.
Your mother is going to kill you.
But I did it for a good cause.
Right?
