Countrycide Pt. 4

I woke up on the dirty concrete floor of a makeshift cell. Light shining in through an opening in the wall.

Ianto was sitting nearby on a box holding a meat hook, watching me nervously. "You know. I've never liked camping." he noticed as I reached for my weapons "Don't bother, they took the guns and whatever else you had on you,"

Toshiko pulled a torch from her sock and looked around the room. Boxes were scattered around the floor and broken doors and junk laid against the walls. A few chains hung down from the ceiling in the center of the room. "Charming place they've got,"

"Judging by the sound reverberations and the air quality, pretty deep underground. Chances of rescue...?"

Toshiko checked the walls and door, looking for a way out as she spoke to Ianto, not sounding worried while I was clearly scared. "We don't need rescuing! I haven't met a cell yet I couldn't get out of,"

Ianto looked over at me "What were they?"

"Don't know. Happened too quickly," I lied

"You're lying,"

"Ianto...if I don't tell you, it's for good reason...just trust me on that,"

"You scared?"

I looked down at my hand to see it shaking "Monsters I get...but this time, I'm out of my element. So yeah, I'm scared,"

Toshiko looked up at the opening where the light shined in. She lifted her hand and it was covered with blood.

"That body we saw in the forest..." Ianto started

"Don't think about it," I told him.

"See if you can get that light to work, huh?" Tosh asked.

Ianto stood up and shined his torch on the chains hanging nearby, trying to fix the light. "You two are used to this aren't you? That facial expression you all share. When things get a bit out of control like you enjoy it. Like you get a high from the danger,"

I looked away guiltily.

"You want me to apologize for that?" Toshiko asked

"Don't you ever wonder how long you can survive before you, you go mad, or, or get killed or lose a loved one..." Ianto argued

"Been there, done that," I admitted "twice now,"

"God, I'm hungry," Tosh said

"You should have had that cheeseburger," Ianto said

"Not that hungry."

I looked over as Toshiko's beam hit an object. My face going pale.

"What's that?" Toshiko asked

"You've found something?" Ianto asked

"It's just a shoe. Wait, there's another. There's dozens of them,"

"Oh, my God," I blanched

"How many people have been down here?" Tosh asked

"And what happened to them?" Ianto asked

"Is that a fridge?" Tosh went over to open it, but I was quick enough to slam it shut before she could look.

"Angela, what is it, what's in there?" Ianto asked "Tell us,"

I felt my whole body shake as I sighed "You wanted to if I saw what it was that caught us...I've faced this before. The body in the forest...there's a reason there was nothing left on the body. They need to eat." I looked up at them "and we're the food,"

"Got to be three steel bolts." Toshiko explained as we looked over the door "Top, middle and bottom,"

"How are you at calculating target stress points? Find the weakest point, bit of brute force?" Ianto asked

"Nice thought, but it's reinforced," I said

Ianto kicked at the door until a small panel slid back. We stepped to the sides and it opened. A woman entered and I grabbed her.

"Get off. Look at me, you idiot. I'm not gonna hurt you," she said

"You've got a gun," Tosh noted

"I promise, I promise,"

"Okay, okay. Give her some space," Tosh ordered, but I didn't relent "Ange..."

I huffed, releasing the woman.

"Thank you. Were you injured when they took you? Can I see? I'm a nurse." She explained, but I backed away from her "Okay. Okay, okay. Does anyone else know you're here? Have you managed to call for help?"

"We don't need any help. There's three more of us in the village," Tosh explained

I shook my head as she gave away the information.

"I can't help you. I'm sorry,"

"What d'you mean?" Ianto asked

"I've been sent to collect you. I've got to take you to them,"

"Then tell us what's going on. We can help," Tosh said

"No one's safe. Every ten years it takes us again,"

I looked up at the mention...but there was no way, he could know...could he? "What takes you? What is it?"

"The Harvest." The woman noticed Ianto make a move "No, please, you have to come with me,"

Tosh dropped the meat hook as she stared down the barrels of the shotgun.

"In there, please," the woman ordered as she pushed us into a room filled with plastic wrapping.

"If you help us, we can stop all this. Please," Tosh said

"I'm sorry. Get back,"

"Oh, God, that stench," Tosh said as we noticed the bodies wrapped in plastic hanging from ceiling hooks. "Tell us what these creatures are. Do they look like us?"

"How else are we gonna look?" A man asked before kissing the woman.

"Oh shit," I cursed as I tried to escape, only to get a rifle butt in the stomach. The man handcuffed my hands behind my back.

"There are three more out there," the woman informed as I sent a glare towards Toshiko.

"Not a problem. How are they?" The man asked

"They're in a good state." the woman noted as the man bound Toshiko and Ianto's wrists behind their backs. "I think they're the best we've ever had,"

"Yeah? Oh, I forgot to tell you, we caught the boy. Finally." the man went behind a table and pulled out a person with a bag over their head "Come on. Come on,"

"I won't tell anyone," The boy said

"Who is he?" Toshiko asked

"He's meat." the man said as he pushed the boy away "I'm afraid we're all just meat," the man and woman exited the slaughter room.

I looked at Toshiko and Ianto "Get ready to run,"

Toshiko stood as we watched the couple pick up some hooks. "What are you going to do, put us on meat hooks?"

The man fetched a baseball bat "No, not yet. You see, meat has to be tenderized first." he walked over to me, looking me up and down "Good. Ready?"

I smiled, headbutting the man. "Go." I ordered Tosh and Ianto "Get the others,"

The couple pulled me back, but I was thankful the other two had gotten away.

"Do what you want," I told them "This isn't my first time dealing with you human meat hunting freaks,"

"We'll be sure to take extra care with you, then," the man took the butt of the rifle the woman had and knocked me out with it.
