Chapter 10

I sat on the rock, holding the narrow stick and a dagger in the other. I've been trying to figure out how to make your own arrows, since the four I have left won't last for long. It didn't go so well since the dagger consisted more of a sharp rock than an actual knife. I noticed some children watch from a distant. “I won't bite” I said and they slowly made their way over. A young boy watched with wide eyes as I sharpened the stick. “What is it?” He asked, pointing at the arrow in my hand and those that lay on the ground. His voice was light. “This” I took one arrow from the ground and held it in front of him. “This is called an arrow. Have you've never seen one before?” All of the children shook their head. “You use it to hunt animals” I took my bow and showed them how to aim. I didn't even make my shot before Yoesphin came rushing forward to me. “Alice, we need you and your bow” Was all she said before dragging me away.

“What's wrong?” I asked once we started to follow the path into the forest. Amos had as well followed among with other elves, each carrying their spear. “We think a troll is luring on these grounds. One of the hunters had noticed big footprints earlier”

Just as she told us we soon saw the big footprints I was familiar with. Yoesphin crouched and let her hand touch the mark. “I don't think it has gone too far, papa” She said and stood up. “It's still fresh”

“Let's split up! Yoesphin and Alice, you follow that road. Rin and Wen take the right. Me and Stell will go to the left” Amos pointed out direction and made sure everyone knew what was going to happen. Yoesphin and I left and followed our path. I held tight to my bow and searched for the familiar shape of an ugly beast. I thought we had driven them back before. I heard Yoesphin gasp and before I knew she had made a run through the trees. I followed her and stopped when I saw what kind of creature she was bending over. A white horse, its eyes closed and stomach cut open. On its forehead a helical horn stood proudly, as it was showing the way to heaven. “Is that a unicorn?” My voice barely made the sound as I had hard time believing what I was seeing. “Yes” Yoesphin croaked and I could tell she was trying to hold the tears in. I noticed that the big footprints as well had been here. “Maybe the troll had...” I couldn't manage to finish my sentence. I heard Yoesphin mumble words I didn't understand over the dead animal and rubbed its back.

“Unicorns are special creatures” She said, but didn't move. “They are known for their kindness and are rarely seen where the rainbow doesn't shine. I don't know how the troll tracked down this poor one, but it won't go to waste” She took out her knife and started to cut the horn. Why would she disgrace a dead animal? “What are you doing?”

She had already put the horn in her bag before she answered my question. “The horn of a unicorn has healing powers. Small measures of its dust can heal even the deadliest wounds. I've heard stories that it has awaken people from the dead” Her voice was stern and her look serious. “One unicorn may have died, but it will save many others”

Suddenly we heard trees falling, not too far from here. People screaming as death was upon them and we started to run. That's when we saw the beast, trying to make its way into the village. Yoesphin was quick with her feet and rushed forward with her spear in hand. I felt paralysed and had no clue of what to do. All my training vanishing from my mind. Women took their children and ran in the opposite direction. Someone happened to push me as they tried to get pass. That was my wake-up call and quickly I drew an arrow towards the troll. It got stuck in its arm, not exactly my target but enough to make the troll turn around and notice my position. Its hand came fast, trying to get a hold of me. I jumped to the side and shot again. Of course anyone would get angry if someone was shooting at you, so why did I get surprised when the beast started to run after me? Haven't I done this before? I made my way, parry between the trees, making sure we were living the village. Yoesphin was soon after, throwing her spear. Soon the troll fell to the ground, the spear stuck in its spine. “That's was close” I said and tried to catch my breath. “Aren't trolls supposed to be in the mountains?” “We can't hold them back forever!” Yoesphin snapped and her glare was angry. I took a step back, making sure I was keeping the space. Instead of getting my answers she walked away with angry steps.
