I am not really known for smooth moments.
So I really can't be blamed when the butter I'm holding
Drops to the ground.
She immediately looks over,
Red dots my cheeks.
I bend over and pick up the butter and
Look into the eyes I've missed all summer.
"...Hey Adalie," I squeak.
"Hey," she responds.
Silence fills the air like a thick fog.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"Visiting my cousins for the month," she tells me.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm with Ella," I say,
"Her family has a lake house here."
She nods and the silence is back
Suffocating us
Choking us.
I stare at the ground and she tucks her hair behind her ear.
Finally we are interrupted by an older man.
"Adalie, ma cherie, let's go," he says.
She seems grateful for an out.
"Bye Maddie," she says and walks out the door with the man,
Taking my heart with her.
