She plays with her ring, twisting it back and forth across her index finger.
I run my thumb across a blade of grass.
Silence.
"Adalie-"
"Maddie-"
We both begin talking at the same time.
"You first," I say.
"Have you heard the comments?" She asks.
I don't want to answer.
I don't want to talk about this.
I want to run far, far, away and forget this ever happened.
But something tells me she doesn't let things go easily.
"Yeah, " I say, staring at the ground.
"I thought it would go away.
People say dumb stuff all the time.
Mostly no one listens.
What made this different?"
She shrugs.
"I don't know.
People were bored.
Hell hath no fury like a person scored, right?"
I smile briefly.
"But - no offence intended - I've heard people say unkind things about you before.
And I probably should have stood up for you.
But again, how is this different?
They weren't even talking about you," she says.
It's a good question.
I'm not really sure how to answer her.
So I do what I always do when I'm nervous.
I start listing things that are either half truths or completely irrelevant.
"Well you're my friend, so it bothers me.
And they used an unkind word.
No one should use that word.
Ever.
In fact we could report them.
We should make sure no one else in the school says that word.
And-"
"Maddie," she cuts me off.
"You're rambling.
What are you trying to say?"
It's silent for a moment.
"It bothers me because," I start, racking my brain for options.
"because um..."
"Because - "
"Because it's true," she finished for me.

A/n: wow another crazy long chapter. Thoughts?
