I think that the way it worked after Harry was born, James and Lily took shifts on checking on him, but Sirius told them he would look after Harry since they were all roommates at the time so he basically slept in the nursery with Remus.
Then Sirius had taken the amazing idea to sleep in a crib as well so they could 'understand' Harry and even though it was the most freaking stupid idea Remus still transfigured two pillow into a big crib and so when Lily and James came into the lantern- night light alighted nursery, they found Moony and Padfoot cuddled together in a cramped crib adorably drooling and snoring along with baby Harry who had somehow been transported in between the both of them.
Awe.
