One time James was as usual being his cocky self at breakfast and Severus was sitting with Lily at the table and when Severus was about to say 'back off' he ended up spitting in James's face.
James's reaction though. :
"I'VE BEEN INFECTED WITH GREASE! SOMEONE CALL MADAM POMFREY!" Then he pretended to faint.
Severus Snape then knew, James Potter ultimately hated his guts. Greasy guts.
