Lames getting a cat, naming it Elvendork then Lily writing a letter to Sirius about how the cat went missing when it was really with Sirius and then after the killing of Lily and James Sirius took care of the cat and then after Sirius got arrested the cat wandered, had kittens and then disappeared.
Then the cat and its kittens appeared again when Harry came to Diagon Alley for the first time and Crookshanks ended up being one of the kittens Elvendork had.
