River's POV:
Last night had not gone as planned. Around a little after midnight, I woke up to Ellie screaming. She was drenched in sweat and was breathing heavily. It legit scared the shit out of me. After we both calmed down and went back to sleep, everything was peaceful for about two hours.
This time Ellie was bawling her eyes out. I had immediately jumped out of the small chair I was currently in and began rocking her like I did to Bella when she had nightmares.
It took a couple of tries but she finally settled back into her slumber. However, I did not. The night terrors happened every couple hours or so until Dr. Kabler entered the room along with three males. In her hand was a long syringe with a tinted blue liquid in it.
The males happened to be Alex, Caden and Colby my younger brother. They stood in front of me trying to block my view from my mate and the doctor.
"River it won't hurt her." Dr. Kabler said. A growl erupted through the room as I saw the needle puncture Ellie's pale skin. Her eyes shot open and I saw the pain flash across her face. That was enough for me to break free from the strong grips of my friends. I was over to Ellie's side in less than a second. As I brushed the loose pieces of her hair behind her ear I whispered, "I'll make the pain go away, I promise. "Then she slipped into unconsciousness.
"Alpha I need to speak to you in my office." Dr. Kabler said. Groaning I scooted my chair back and reluctantly followed her to a paper filled room. Times like this remind me of when my parents were alive, and Alex would always do something stupid but I would get blamed for it. My mom would drag me through the whole pack house and show everyone that I had done something utterly stupid. I smiled to myself as I remembered how my mom shaped me into the man I am today and how l followed her like a lost puppy.
"We got your test results back." She said as she shuffled through a stack of papers. A few weeks back I had gotten myself placed in the infirmary. The doctors couldn't find anything wrong with me, but Dr. Kabler had suspected something suspicious, so she ran a couple tests on me. That suspicious thing had been leukemia.
"Should I be prepared for the good or bad news," I asked quietly. She reached over her desk and patted my hand, gesturing for me to continue. I was sweating profusely and my legs were bouncing
up and down like crazy. To say I was anxious was an understatement.
After fumbling with the clasp, I finally seemed to pull out the papers that could possibly change my life forever.
I scanned through, the pages of words and numbers until my eyes caught a word that made my heart stop.
"River what does it say?"
"Positive," I said breathlessly.
"Baby boy come here." We both stood up and I hugged the woman who practically raised me like it was the last hug I would ever receive.
That day my mate had gone through so much, and I had just gotten news that made my whole world do a three hundred and sixty degree turn.
All I knew was that I would fight as hard as I could and wasn't going to give up.

Authors note:
Welp that was depressing. I have no idea where the idea of River having a disease that could end up killing him, came from but it did so there you go.
I know this is short but it's 12:30 am, and I'm tired so ✌🏻️.
