That remaining part of summer was the best I'd ever had. We swam and had mini parties and danced around. We visited Cousin Vinny a couple of times and finally the last few days of summer were coming to an end. After that, it was back to school. And, boy was I in for some hard work in those first few days. Everything in the Durmstrang castle had to be Hogwarts proofed. Still, it would be fun. I would miss the random arrows flying through the air in certain hallways though. I enjoyed my last days of summer easily and quickly, running around with James and Sirius, going on a picnic with my family, and for the second to last day, all of the friends I had found at Hogwarts came over to have a party. The last day passed way too quickly for it to be true. So here I was the day I returned to Durmstrang, climbing onto Tide's back after giving Sirius a kiss goodbye and waving to my brother and Lily as they climbed into their car to Kings Cross.
I laughed as Tide took off into the air and began flying towards Durmstrang, happy to be going back to my home.
It was about an hour before I got to Durmstrang, but by then, in Bulgaria it was getting close to night. I walked into the school and chuckled at the terrified first years as they attempted to leap over the chasm. I swept past them quickly and leapt over it without breaking stride. Landing on the other side, I strode into the hallway that led to the Hall. I rolled to the side to dodge the ax flying at before standing back up and examining the hallway. It hadn't changed at all. Sure, a few paintings were in worse state than I had left them in and there was an arrow buried in on coat of arms but that was normal here. I looked at the brownish red walls that gave off a warm glow, throwing your perspective of the so called "ice school" off. Torches lined the walls and gave off a warm light that kept the cold of the outside away. The floors were covered in a soft, red carpet, which was often why people walked around barefoot with their shoes in their bags. A suit of bewitched armor sprung out at me from around a corner, and I knocked it to the ground with one hand before continuing to the Hall.
As I reached the Hall, I quickly accioed my uniform and, slipping around the corner, put it on. A large group of eleven year old boys began to parade around the corner and I quickly began to run before taking a flying leap over their heads and landing in well tucked roll, causing them to gasp and point. I turned and winked at them before walking into the Hall to my friends. They clapped me on the back, laughing at my dramatic entrance before Leonardo called for silence. Slowly, the talking died down.
I cupped my hands around my mouth and hollered," You go Leonardo!"
For no reason.
Leonardo started," Thank you Tara. Now to begin with, first years. We do not sort you or anything like that. We simply take you and put you all together in your own little room together. Soon, you will grow to trust each other as everybody here does. It doesn't matter what you think of the person standing next to you now, for you will learn to trust him with your life. You will begin living on the first floor and as you graduate each year, you will move up as other students leave the school for work. Ask somebody older than you to show you where to go. You may sit wherever you like.
"Next, since the seventh years of the school of Hogwarts will be visiting for the majority of the year, several of our hallway obstacles must be baby proofed. So I apologize in advance for your not getting attacked in the hallway this year.
"Back to dorm room situations. As most of you know, the top floor is completely off limits, as it hosts a dragon and its rider, the only girl in the school. Do remember that Tara is more dangerous than any of you will ever hope to be, so making a move on her is not a good idea. We don't want another one in the hospital with a missing arm or leg.
"Last, every year, there is a Captain chosen to lead us into battle. Due to our location being extremely close to several forms of magical animals and folk, it is necessary for us to have somebody in total command in these situations as well as any others we may have. This year our Captain will be... Tara Potter! She will organize plans for situations with and without the Hogwarts students. Be careful and do not cross her, she can be rather touchy."
Leonardo grinned and beckoned me up to where he stood at the podium. I grinned back and walked up to the front.
Crossing my arms, I looked down at the sea of faces before saying loudly," I will have plans ready by the end of the week, and I expect you all to be here when I give them. Also, feel free to come to me for help unless it's small and stupid like you can't reach your glasses from the ground. Most likely, I put them there. So... to a great year!"
The guys in the room clapped and cheered. Dinner appeared on the tables and I rushed back to my seat in order to get to the food before anyone else did. Diving across the table seemed to be the most effective way to do this and I proceeded to throw my body over the mashed potatoes and some steak. I kept a protective stance over them before backing off the table and onto the seat and grabbing some of each, as well as some asparagus grown in the inside gardens. I finished these quickly and then moved onto the dessert that had been set out soon after the dinner had. My chocolate ice cream was quickly gone. By the time I was done the rest of us were as well. Well except the first years. In Durmstrang you learned very quickly that you had to eat quickly in order to get a meal in. And though there wasn't an emergency right now, all of us were very used to having to eat quickly.
I stood up after the nearest first year was done and stepped onto the bench.
"FIRST YEARS!" I bellowed, as was customary for Captains. "DURING YOUR STAY AT DURMSTRANG YOU WILL LEARN TO EAT FASTER AS IS NECESSARY DUE TO REASONS THAT WILL BE EXPLAINED EARLY TOMORROW MORNING IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW! PLEASE FOLLOW ME TO YOUR DORMS!"
They followed me to the dorms, though I didn't miss their stealing of food from the table. I didn't mention it as most Captains did, I did the same thing in my first year for a while. We reached the bottom of the pullcords and I pointed out the hidden doors that led to their dormitories. I walked into the room with them and watched as they looked around in wonder at the beautiful red room. Coats of armor stood in the corners and large swords and daggers hung on the wall with axes and several other weapons.
"This will be your room for the next year. I hope you like it because there's no moving unless one of you is secretly a female. Also, none of you are allowed to leave the room during the night. SinceI do not wish to give you nightmares, I won't tell you the reason for that. Please do not leave. I don't want to have to save your life tonight. I will if I have to but I would prefer not to have to get out of my nice, warm bed. So, for the final time, stay in your dorm. I will see you in the morning."
I walked out the door, aware of them following me out the door. I turned around and winked at them before reaching up, grabbing a pullcord and being jerked away.
I entered my room a minute later to find Tide curled up on the floor. I smiled and walked over to him and laid my hand on his snout. One of his huge purple eyes opened and glanced at me before he reached forward with one of his talons and pulled me under his wing. I grinned as I found my bed under it. I laid down and went to sleep.
I was probably asleep for about an hour when I heard screams from the ground level. I was up in an instant, shoving Tide's wing to the side and grabbing my daggers on my mad dash to the door. I didn't even bother with the pullcords and instead jumped off the ledge from eight floors up and falling for about ten seconds before landing in front of the four first years that were pointing at a large group of elves that were coming towards them. The elves were armed to the teeth, literally, as some had metal teeth. I growled and charged them. Three quick slices cut seven of them open and turned them to dust. Two stabs took another two down. I felt teeth fasten around my left leg but I grabbed the elf that was biting me by its puny neck and thowing it into a suit of armor, that immediately came to life and impaled the elf with it's sword. I turned around to find the first years being held by two elves each. I reached for my throwing knives but realized that I had left them in my hurry to help the first years. So, instead I reached my hand out in their direction and lightening shot from my palm and into the brains of each elf. They dropped to the ground around the first years. I looked at them before looking up and glaring at the first years who were gaping at me in surprise.
I growled menacingly at them," I thought I told you to stay in your dorms?"
One of them spoke up quickly," Well, see we were going to set up a prank in the Hall-"
I looked down on them and sighed," Learn to defend yourselves before you start going out at night. None of us want to be woken up by your girly screaming, and I'm sure the Hogwarts kids sure don't want to be woken up unless it's an emergency."
They flushed and another kid opened his mouth to say something, but I held up my hand," I'm not against pranking at all, but at this school, you have to learn how to defend yourself before you go wandering about at night. These creatures have enough magic to get past the magical barriers in the school, which is why your dormitory doors are hidden. All of this will be explained by your first teacher tomorrow, so consider this a preview. Don't go outside at night until you can defeat these enemies. Got it?"
They nodded and I smiled and pushed them back into their dormitories," Go to sleep."
After they left I did a quick lap around the castle, only encountering a couple more magical creatures which I destroyed easily. Then I ran back to the pullcords and went to each dorm telling the watchman who stood by the pullcord when something like this happened and waited for the Captain to tell them what to do. I told them that I dealt with it. They could go back to bed. I finally made it back up to my dorm and set my daggers on my writing desk before performing a healing spell on my leg where I was bitten. Luckily, those teeth weren't poisonous. I then crawled under Tide's wing to go back to sleep for a few more hours.
