It was an insider as to why you were called Hyena, people thought it was just a narcissistic way of boasting his sex game but it was deeper than that. The animal was a reoccurring character amongst the relationship. You guys met whilst hiking, you both weren't hikers but Derek was trying to clear his mind as he was upset about a lost deal, and you were trying to find your brother who was a track runner. When you guys crossed paths and conversed for a bit you both heard an ear-piercing yell that sounded like a hyena and you both shared a laugh as to whether hyenas were even there. It was an everlasting joke between you two.
