I don't know how long I have been running.

My lungs say weeks, my legs say years, and my heart says not long enough. Who was I to believe?

I followed my heart, keeping my quick pace even, my tongue lolling out. I was tired, yes, but I was not about to stop because of that. My satchel was now wrapped carefully around my neck, making sure it wasn't in the way when I ran and so it wouldn't choke me. At least my life was secure with this.

I haven't stopped once. I just let my legs control my movement, my consciousness elsewhere.

Maybe I have run far enough....

I collapsed in the middle of a small town square I was passing through at the moment, my head twitching and reaching for the fountain. I needed water. Hell, I don't think I feel my legs anymore. Were they still there? Why is everything darkening? Why can't I hear anything?

Why...?

I woke up to the scent of water, my legs and arms heavy and wary. My eyes opened slightly, staring at a deep brown wood roof.

I sat up instantly, but let out a pained whimper.

"Oh, you're awake. Stay down, you still need to rest and refill up on energy. How long have you been running, by the way?" I looked at a young woman, maybe twenty-seven, give or take.

I looked down to see that I was on a bed with a black blanket wrapped around me, my satchel next to me.

My normally shining black coat was dull and matted with knots, mud, and of course, blood.

I whimpered as I looked at her. She's human, no doubt.

"Why don't you drink, hm? You must be tired from your long  journey." She placed a bowl next to me on the floor, the contents clear with water.

I licked my snout as I leaned down to take a drink, ending up  drinking five bowls full.

I sat down on the bed and pulled the blanket over me, bracing myself as I shifted back to human.

I looked at the woman to see her gasp, but then a smile drew itself on her lips.

"Can you be my mom?" I asked softly and innocently. At least then I could have some protection, though it was quite sudden and whatever.

She shook her head. "Honey, that's not how it works." She whispered, stroking my cheek.

"It does. I'm an orphan." I mumbled sadly. I looked down at my bloodied arm, looking up when I felt her fingers pull my chin up gently.

"I've always wanted a son." She grinned at me as I hugged her, crying.

"How c-come y-you didn't freak out w-when I turned?" I asked through tears. She only smiled softly and slid her sleeve down to reveal a mark. "You have a werewolf mate?" I asked, sniffling as I slowly began to stop crying. She nodded, ruffling my hair.

"My husband is a werewolf. Beta." My eyes widened as I was overwhelmed with fear, pulling away from her and scooting back until my back hit the corner. "What's wrong?" She asked worriedly, reaching over for me.

I flinched and looked at her with so much fear, my heart beginning to beat like a passing bullet.

I kept whimpering as I tried to make myself hide within the blanket.

What if this Beta was just as bad as the one back at my last pack? No. It can't be possible. This one is a lot older.

Oh no, he could be worse! He could rip my limbs off for not preparing lunch in the way he would tell me!
