Chapter 6....Meeting His Mother

I felt like I was going to throw up. I wasn't always the friendliest person to be around. I've always had severe anxiety issues. I start focusing on everything around me that could go wrong, and then when it turns into fear I start to shut down. Like I can't breathe because it feels like the walls are closing in on me, shut down.

Why in the world did he pick me?

On the ride to his childhood residence Dawson briefed me on our back story. I was glad he had one, because I sure as hell didn't have one. But then again it's not my family that we're trying to fool, so it's not my place to develop the back story. Even though I had come up with charity story on the fly when Suzie drilled me for details.

"Are you nervous?" He asked holding my hand and smirking. I'm glad that he found this all so amusing.

"No," I lied biting my lip.

"You're a terrible liar, you know that?" He laughed. I just rolled my eyes. "My mother can smell fear you know." I knew my eyes were huge with fear, and Dawson just laughed.

Jerk!

When we pulled up to the house and I let Dawson help me out of the car. It was showtime. There was absolutely no turning back now. All fear must be swallowed, as we have passed the point of no return. We walked hand in hand to the front door. There were a lot of cars here, and noise was coming from the back yard. The ring on my hand suddenly felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.

"What's the occasion?" I whispered as I was readjusting my skirt.

"Well it's my father's annual BBQ," he smiled. "Lots of family and close friends. So you'll have to be on the top of your game."

"Okay, okay, jeeze you really know how to spook a girl," I laughed, though it didn't do anything to calm my nerves. My chest was starting to feel restricted, stupid bra.

Just then I was pulled into a bear hug, and someone was kissing my head.

"God still answers prayers," the woman sighed and I guessed that this was Dawson's mother. "Hello Dear, my name is Olivia and I'm Dawson's mother. You must be Danielle!" I couldn't get a word in edgewise I was just being pulled inside the house ever which way. "Danielle I would tell you I've heard so much about you, but that would be a lie. I'm afraid Dawson here has been selfish and kept you all to himself."

"Gee Mom, it's nice to see you too," Dawson said sulking behind us. It was sort of amusing to see him sulk.

"Oh stop your whining," she commanded. "I see you all the time, it's not everyday that I get to meet your fiance." I could tell that Dawson's mother was reprimanding him silently with her eyes.

"Mrs.Conn you have a beautiful home," I stated smiling.

"Why thank you dear, but please call me Olivia," she replied. I saw Dawson tense, and I was starting to like the woman more and more.

"Well well well, what do you have here?" A very pregnant woman said walking into the living room where we were seated.

"Yeah who's the babe?" A younger version of Dawson replied.

"Kids this Danielle, Dawson's fiance. Danielle this is Rebecca my daughter, and my other son Damien."

"What? Dawson's engaged?" I heard Damien cry.

"Never in a million years did I think I would live to see the day Dawson Conn brought home a girl, let alone a fiance," Rebecca laughed.

"Thank you?" I asked. I really didn't know what to say. I just felt like I was in way over my head.
