We had left rather early in the morning. Around six or seven. It was now almost twelve.

The constant sound of the radio being turned up as loud as possible rang through my ears.

"Lo, please turn that down."

"But it's not as good when the volume is lower."

"Then turn it off."

She sighed and clicked the button to turn off the radio.

A few peaceful minutes went by until a rattling sound can from her.

I looked at her to see she was swishing something in her mouth.

"What is that?"

"A jaw breaker. Geez."

"Well quiet it down it's rather annoying."

"It's rather annoying." She mocked my accent.

She didn't quite though. The sound continued and it made me a little more irritable.

"Lolita, please." I begged.

But she didn't.

Becoming even more annoyed I stopped the car and came closer to her.

I held my hand out under her chin.

She looked at me and stopped the swishing.

"Give it to me." I said calmly.

She shook her head.

"I'll stop."

"No. I asked you to stop the last time and you wouldn't just give me the candy."

"No." She shook her head.

For a seventeen year old she sure did act childish.

I sighed frustratedly and grabbed her mouth. I took the candy and threw it out the window.

She crossed her arms and looked out the window.

"I'm sorry. I told you to stop though."

She ignored me as I drove on.

In fact for the rest of the hour she ignored me.

"Come on, Lo. Talk to me please? How about we stop and some food? I'll let you get whatever you want." I suggested, trying to get her to talk.

"Whatever I want?" She asked.

"Yes." I nodded.

"Okay."

I pulled over to a small diner. There weren't very many people there. We sat at a booth together with her across from me.

The waitress came up to us and winked at me. I had no interest though.

"Can I get you anything ,sugar?" She asked me smiling.

I ordered my food and watched as Lolita ordered hers.

"Pizza and a chocolate milk shake."

"Will that be all?"

"Yes." I nodded.

After she walked away I relaxed a bit.

Lolita started giggling.

"What is it?"

"She was hitting on you."

"You think? I have no interest though."

"Why not?"

"Not important. Now, is there anything else you'd like to do today?"

"Can we go record shopping?"

"If that's what you want."

"It is. I love records."

I smiled.

She started to scribble little drawings on a napkin as we waited for our food.

The waitress came back and before she left ,she handed me a paper.

"What's that?" Lolita asked as she sipped her milkshake.

I looked at the paper to see a phone number written down.

"Her phone number." I chuckled.

She laughed.

After lunch we were back on the road. I'm just glad she started talking to me again.

"Hey stop for a minute."

"Hm? Where?"

"At that gas station, please?"

I pulled over to the gas station and she got out. She went inside and came back out.

"Do you have a quarter?" She asked.

"What for?"

"I want to call mother in the hospital."

I sighed as my heart pumped. I was really hoping she'd never say anything like that. But I knew it was bound to happen sometime.

"Get in the car." I said calmly, avoiding her eyes.

"Why?"

"Just please get in."

Just when I got her to talk to me again.

She obliged and as I started to drive again, I decided to tell her.

"Your mother is dead." I said just above a whisper.
