Chapter 10: Sustaining Water Source

Outside the cave, Zhuang Yu was boiling bone broth while digging a reservoir. The importance of this reservoir was self-evident. Whether his chili field could be irrigated sufficiently, and whether Feng Wen and the group of children could withstand such hot weather, depended on it.

The group of children worked enthusiastically, although they didn't know exactly what they were doing.

"Brother Yu, aren't we doing great?" fearing they might not do enough, Zhuang Yu might withhold the bone broth from them.

Zhuang Yu shouted, "Take it easy, when the sun gets too hot, we'll take a break and continue when it's cooler."

"We're not hot at all, really, we can work!" Zhuang Yu was moved. He knew why these children were so eager to prove themselves. They were burdened with responsibilities at such a young age when they should be carefree.

Zhuang Yu sighed. He had to be careful in assigning tasks; otherwise, these children would be overworked to death.

Little Mushroom tilted its head, didn't understand, then went to poke Feng Wen with a stick, asking him to add firewood to the pot's bottom to speed up the bone broth cooking.

Feng Wen shrank his head. Brother said to simmer on low heat, so as long as he saw the fire wasn't out, it was fine.

After poking for a while, seeing Feng Wen standing obediently like a reprimanded little offender but still not adding firewood, Little Mushroom ran off in a huff to play in the shell filled with water, feeling a bit sad because it was the last big shell to hold water, meaning it would soon run out of water to play with. It didn't want to be as hot and uncomfortable as its siblings, all parched by the sun.

Zhuang Yu looked at the sky; the sun was getting hotter. He glanced at the small pool he had dug, quite satisfied with the progress. With more hands, things were indeed easier. Then he called for a break for the children, "Come wash your hands, get ready to drink bone broth, and we'll continue digging the pool when it's cooler in the evening."

The children cheered happily. They had bone broth to drink again, and with such a big pot, it was definitely enough to fill their stomachs.

After the children washed their hands, they lined up and ran to their shells.

Zhuang Yu watched as the row of children blew on their soup bowls, looking like a group of hungry little animals, which was quite amusing.

Because Zhuang Yu had served bamboo shoots, he also provided them with chopsticks.

Zhuang Yu himself was also eating soup and bamboo shoots, which tasted pretty good. The bamboo shoots were tender, and the bone broth had a special flavor with the addition of bamboo shoots.

The children followed Zhuang Yu's lead, using chopsticks to pick up the bamboo shoots in their soup. "We're quite particular. We used to eat with our hands."

"This bark is so delicious, crispy and tender."

"It's not bark. Brother Yu said it's bamboo shoots, fresh and delicious."

"Yes, it fills my stomach. Oh, I've had two bowls already, and I feel like my belly's about to burst."

Little Mushroom also enjoyed the food, realizing that its brother's neighbor was also delicious. Great!

The group of children, with full bellies, lay in a row, exposing their little bellies to the sun. They had wanted to continue digging the pool, but Zhuang Yu stopped them. It wouldn't be good if they got heatstroke in this heat.
