Ever since you could remember, you and jenna were inseparable. Best friends since the start for nine years.  No matter what, she'd fight any boy who hurt you and show them their place.

Like that one time in third grade where Jackson, your enemy, got upset because you refused to give him the answers for the homework from the day before. Jenna had went to go to the bathroom after eating lunch together as you waved her off and before you could react, Jackson had smashed your head against the school's fence. Your head was throbbing from the pain as he punched you straight in the stomach. You pleaded him to stop as he punched you, bruises forming.

He tugged your hair hard, forcing you to look at him as his eyes gave you a menacing stare, "You're giving up that easily Y/N? What a sore loser! This is why you listen to me. When I tell you to do something, you do it! I failed the homework because of you, and now.. You're going to pay for it."

Your eyes were blurry, red from all the crying as you sniffed, nodding and begging him to let you go. He held you down hard, you were too weak to fight back, laughing as he teased you.

You choked on your whimpers as your body ached, "Please, stop.."

Your arms were pierced with his strength by the wall, dark blood trickling down till it dripped down on the floor. Before he could hurt you again, a harsh, but soft voice sounded to the tip of your ears,

"Jackson, what are you doing? Let Y/N go you bastard!" The voice was demanding but yet familiar.

"Jenna.." you murmured..

As you turned around to look at the shocked girl, now storming towards him, you could sense the anger bubbling up against her. The way her fists clenched as each step increased with strength, the way her eyebrows furrowed downwards. Jenna was always known as one of the shortest girls in third grade, at least five inches shorter than anyone else, but right now, she looked wild with wide eyes, like a shield. Before Jackson could retaliate, she punched him square in the jaw, and it wasn't a weak punch,

it was a strong one.

Enough to have Jackson stumble back and hit his head on the pole. His nose was bleeding as he ran away, screaming to the teacher. You could swear his nose was broken. Jenna turned her head back to you, worried as she held you close, her wild eyes slowly returning to the warm ones you always knew of.

"He's gone Y/N, he won't hurt you again okay? Are you okay, are you hurt?" Her eyes lingered down to your arms, your short sleeves which were now stained in your blood as you winced from the stinging pain.. Her eyes widened in worry as she yelled in panic, "Y/N you're bleeding!"

You cried out from the pain as Jenna held your hand tighter, quickly carrying you in her arms as she ran towards the bathroom. She was small, but she was strong and quick.

Your eyes fluttered as the pain wouldn't go away, clinging into Jennas arms as she placed you down gently, running for paper towels and soaking them in water as she gently patted it against your wounds. You gasped out, the stinging was sharp as you held onto her hand harder.

She looked up at your eyes and nodded softly, "You're okay Y/N, it's going to be okay, I know it hurts but you need to stay strong, okay? You won't ever have to worry about Jackson again, if he's going to hurt you, I won't let him." Her voice was comforting as your heavy breaths calmed back to regular breaths. As she wiped the blood away from your arms, focused on your scars, you couldn't help but admire her features. Her cheeks were tainted with light freckles as her eyes were filled with worry, but you could sense warmth in them.

You mumbled under your breath quietly, looking up to meet Jennas gaze, "thank you for helping me.. I don't think I would've made it out in one piece without you j, I love you." The last three words rolled out of your mouth subconsciously as you felt your cheeks grow hot in embarrassment looking down to your fingers, your heart fluttering.

jenna intertwined her small, soft fingers with yours, smiling as she looked up at you.

She held you close and touched your cheek gently, "I love you too, Y/N, always. I'll always look out for you to keep you safe."

And it wasn't a statement, it was a promise.

And ever since that day, you kept falling in love with your best friend and never knew.

It wasn't the boy that you couldn't stop staring at during your history class who rejected you when you asked him and Jenna had come to your door with all your favorite snacks. Or the girl who you'd see everyday in the library but never had the guts to interact with no matter how hard Jenna persisted.

Then that night after you were rejected, you sat in your bed, staring at the ceiling.

Then, your feelings clicked, it made sense.

--

Jenna would come over to your house almost every day and you would talk about anything and everything to her with no shame. Any drama, any struggles,

Every secret.

Every time you got hurt, she'd be there to kneel down beside you and ensure everything was okay with her soft smile. You two would laugh endlessly about the smallest things till you couldn't breathe, or when both your stomachs hurt. You remembered every memory spent together clearly. She'd always know what to say whenever you were struggling, and it never failed to make your heart warm. She was your shoulder to cry on whenever you were heartbroken or stressed. After the arguments you had with each other, big or small, you would meet each other outside of your house and hug, crying and blubbering in each others arms as you apologized infinitely to each other, wondering why you fought in the first place. Jenna was always there for you, and you were always there for her.

She was there.

It was her.

You were in love with her..

and you vowed every night to keep her safe.
