Being a woman
At night
Means ignoring the men
Who look at me
And talk about me
In a language I cannot understand
As they drunkenly ride beside meBeing a woman
At night
Means tension in my body
Shoulders tight
Eyes ahead
Ears alert
Straining to hear any sudden movementsI must not look at them
Or it might provokeBut I must be able to hear them
So that I'll knowBeing a woman
At night
Means quietly switching
My rings around
As I walk,
Because I know
That I swing better with my right hand
And my larger rings will hurt moreTurquoise on my knuckles
Because it's the only "weapon" I haveBeing a woman at night
Is full of unease
Oh, just let me get to the car
