The King of Heaven, Indra appeared before a man who had been trying to please him for a year. The man, though wearing simple clothes made out of nothing but bark and leaves, had a posture that resembled that of a kshatriya. The man fluttered his eyes open feeling a sudden change of atmosphere. "I shall give thee, O King, a son who will be celebrated all over the three worlds and who will promote the welfare of Brahmanas, kine and all honest men. The son I shall give thee will be an irresistible slayer of all foes." The mentioned king was none other than the mighty kin of the great Kuruvanshajam, Ambalikaatmaj Pandu.
The King recalled the words spoken to him by Sakra while addressing his first wife Devi Prithā, who was the daughter of Shurasena, a Yādava king and was later adopted by her uncle Kuntibhoja and named Kunti, to invoke the lord to begot a son.
The winds started blowing faster, and suddenly a white elephant decked in gold ornaments rested before the vision of the couple.
