(Amelia's POV)
Waving the chair in front of me, I gave Dom, Jexvi, a thankful nod as he killed the human thing in front of me. The things might be human, but who fights that well?
Jexvi and Elsie was fighting against the human things, I'm gonna call them the Unhinged from now on. So apparently my dear best friend has neglected to tell me not only that she can fight, but she probably spent a wish for increased speed and agility or other whatnot because she is fighting faster than the Unhinged, and those things are ungodly fast.
I shuddered to think why she needed to learn to fight so well. I know she used to be integrated with the magical community before it became dangerous for her. So what exactly was so dangerous she used a wish on? I vaguely wondered how well the not so storybook vampires and werewolves fight. Which nearly cost me my life.
One of the Unhinged got too close, I screamed. Someone threw a dagger at it. The hell?! Who carries knives around?!
I look around, holding the dagger and using a f*cking chair as my shield. Elsie and Dom was holding out pretty good I say, definitely better than me but then whose not? The dumbass Zanolis has been fighting the genie and Ryan, his right hand man who kidnapped us before, at the same time. So Ryan was not human. No it's not because he is fighting well, well that too but because of the literal fangs hanging from his mouth. I think Zanolis might have called him a were-vamp hybrid when he was fighting and insulting them a little while ago.
I smashed the chair against one of the Unhinged, then cursed cause it had already cut me with its nails. I was pissed.
Jexvi appeared in front of me with a worried look, 'did it get to you? Sh*t, I'm sorry but there's just so many of them.' Examining my cut he continued, 'Damn it! They did, with their nails too, Insamia's nails are poisonous.'
He might have trailed off or maybe I just stopped listening. But great, I was gonna die, before I did anything fun. The sounds fade out as things turned black. I fainted.
(Jexvi's POV)
Well damn! The mortal just fainted on me! Now we're in trouble.
'For God's sake, just released Ancient already!' I snarled at Zanolis in demon language.
'I can't, he exhaust me too much to use now.' He snarled back.
'Then just yell at them or something! Insamia are a cousin of demons, if you're so strong they'll listen!'
'Ancient is not a demon dumbass!'
'Not Ancient!' I roared back, 'YOU!!! Your grandmother is Lilith for Christ sake!'
Zanolis only hesitated slightly before my letting his full aura show, in the older demon language, which was shared with Insamia and other half demons, he ordered them off.
At first they did stop, probably out of shock, because soon they started attacking again, but when Zanolis roared louder, they hesitated. I can understand. The survival instinct in me is saying run or listen.
Unsurprisingly they listened, and I managed to get one of their saliva, needed for the poisonous scratch on my mortal friend.
They fled as soon as they could, the coward of a genie disappeared too, which left us with the genie's sidekick.
I smiled cruelly, thinking of all the ways to deal with the hybrid. Zanolis was taking it easy, not wanting to anger the gods, but after sending Insamia after us and throwing a dagger at our helpless mortal friend, which luckily was blocked by an unfortunate Insamia, I think it give us enough reason to kill him. Hybrids are dangerous anyways, pros from both and cons varying from each one.
The hybrid didn't even get to scream as I appeared in front of it, using my fangs to cut through his vocal chords but not deep enough for him to bleed to death. I wasn't going to make his death quick. I smiled as I tasted the hybrid's blood, slightly acidic, but plenty good.
'Jexvi.'
My name was spoken quietly, I turn my head to the speaker glaring, but the demon met my stare head on then gesture slightly to the side. The mortal was waking up, but that doesn't change my plan.
'Doesn't she remind you of Lyra*? Except her eyes are wrong and slightly too pale.'
* just in case anyone forgot, Lyra is Jexvi's dead wife.*
My head snapped back to the demon, a low warning growl emitting from my throat. He kept staring at me, finally I looked away first, to stare at the broken hybrid. I can sense his fear for me, I am a powerful demon after all, I can also sense an underlying sadness and pain from betrayal.
It's understandable, from what I researched, like most hybrids, he was abandoned. Arkell took him in, the first person the hybrid thought could be nice to him, just fled knowing he would die here.
I crouched in front of him, 'do you still want to live?'
Most would think that's a stupid question, but his life wasn't good, he was close to suicide when Arkell found him. And now he's worse off then before. At least he couldn't feel after his death. No more constant pain and fear for him.
There are therapists for sure, even in magical community but no one would take a hybrid, and he gave up a long time ago. Which was why Arkell used him, the perfect weapon, all he needed was a little false love and then he's loyal.
In the end Arkell was the cruelest of all.
I ended his life fast when he nodded, eyes defeated, the mortal didn't see.
Solemn I walked towards Zanolis, after knowing him for so long. I have learnt to read his eyes, and he mine. We communicated quickly through our eyes. We gotta find Arkell. Kill him. End this.
I heard the mortal gasped as I walked out of the room, waiting for the others outside. She saw the body then.
I didn't look back, no one did not even the mortal. She's young, but she learns fast. The body can do us no good, and right now we have a problem. We must fix it.
I watched as the mortal steel herself, learning already how dangerous and dark our world could be. Zanolis was right, she was just like Lyra. I smiled slightly.
