√The Mercato Centrale in Florence is located between via dell'Ariento, via Sant'Antonio, via Panicale and Piazza del Mercato Centrale. It is one of the results from the time of risanamento, the period when Florence was the capital of Italy in the late 19th century.

•Mercato Centrale Firenze gives back to the city an ideal marketplace of taste, redeveloping a vital venue in central Florence. It’s a rebirth that returns artisans and their produce to the heart of the food scene.

•Mercato Centrale made its debut in Florence in one of the city’s most crucial places: the first floor of the historic San Lorenzo market. It opened in the spring of 2014 to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the iron and glass architecture erected in 1874. It was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, the man behind Florence’s Sant’ Ambrogio market and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.

WHAT IS MERCATO CENTRALE

THE BEAUTY OF ALL THAT’S GOOD

Mercato Centrale is an idea that has become a place, a hub for everyone who loves, lives and chooses food.

A new way to talk about food that revolves around artisans of taste and their expertise in an original style whose strength lies in simplicity: because “la bontà è elementare”.

THE IDEA’S SIMPLE BUT STRONG

1. Return artisans and their produce to the heart of the food scene. 2. Give back to the city an important place and an ideal marketplace of taste. 3. Devise, design and share cultural events and moments.

ARTISANS EQUAL QUALITY

Quality food today is no longer an option. At Mercato Centrale Firenze we have set ourselves specific regulations so that our food is up to standard. The recipe is simple: if all our traders can guarantee their products, then those products can in turn guarantee goodness. Hence the Mercato can act as a guarantor for all those values that are part and parcel of what we consider to be an integral part of food and dining. It all begins with attention: towards the customer, the region, the environment. And it continues with special care, in terms of craftsmanship, experience and tradition. Information is the key: on the products, their characteristics, their origin and processing – from traceability to marks of quality. Quality can and must be achieved. And it is our job to make constant improvements. Because “la bontà è elementare”.

THE STALLS OF TASTY THINGS

The artisan-manned stores are the heart of Mercato Centrale, with their expertise in making, preparing, selecting and selling produce according to shared quality-first guidelines. Every store has its own workspace and makes dishes and specialities on show to the public: the perfect place for grocery shopping and to discover the truest food (at a fair price) that Italy has to offer. The dishes and specialities can be shared and eaten at the Mercato’s marketplace, open to everyone, or can be bought and taken home.

THE CITY AT OUR HEART

Mercato Centrale has always strived to have strong and lasting ties with the city it settles in. This is why the local context, with its busy network of organizations and associations, is an important, active and engaged interlocutor. The relationships that Mercato Centrale has developed are tangible, respected and well known, particularly through significant gestures. The places chosen for Mercato Centrale openings — hubs in the urban fabric and often neglected venues — are brought back to life and returned to the city, which can experience and enjoy them fully again.

AN OPEN MARKETPLACE

At Mercato Centrale culture is nourishment and food nourishes culture. Prestigious events are held here, organized in tandem with local and national institutions in the fields of art, music, science and culture. This is how Mercato Centrale develops its identity as a unique destination that is chosen and discovered as a container of important contents. It is a place where participation is total, where there is always something to see, explore, try and learn on a multitude of levels. The market is never simply a container but a promoter and supporter of special initiatives and collaborations that are high in impact, resonance and visibility. The events held at Mercato Centrale always contribute to the city’s cultural lifeblood and always underline the message that—now more than ever—food is culture.
