"You know that the sole purpose

of my life is to irritate you."

Adelaide was overwhelmed, at best.

The familiar smell of the lobby, the busy weather of the Stark employees rushing around, Tony's comforting hand on her shoulder.

She had yearned for this moment for so long. Every day that she had spent away from here, she wished life had been so simple that she could just walk back into this building like nothing had ever changed. She missed this. So, so much. It felt surreal to be standing here. In fact, she thought she was dreaming. Her life couldn't possibly be this perfect. Things never fell into place for her. She had to be dreaming.

Tony leaned down to her ear, reading the expression on her face.

"This isn't a dream," he smiled. Pepper stepped forward and held her hand tightly, grinning at her.

Adelaide smiled a little. And then a little more. And then a bit more. Until her smile stretched so wide across her face that her cheeks hurt. When she couldn't contain her excitement to just a smile, she broke into a small laughter that wouldn't stop bubbling out of her. She felt a massive amount of weight being lifted from her shoulders. She had been through literal hell. For the past months, all she had known was pain and loneliness. But that was all gone now. Now that her family was here, she didn't have to worry about a single thing ever again.

"Come on, let's go up," Tony said, squeezing her shoulder.

Up.

To home.

The penthouse looked a little messy.

There were still unopened boxes and half-arranged things strewn across the room. There was very obviously a lot of unpacking left to do. But Adelaide felt a thrill in her chest at the thought of unpacking to settle into this familiar place once again. She saw the island where they had shared many breakfasts together, and the couch where they had fallen asleep watching tv and the balcony where they had gone when sleep had evaded them late in the nights. It was all home. Even the single mismatched chair at the dining table was home. And the little tear on the couch was home too. And even the frigid temperature of the room was home.

But most of all, Tony and Pepper and Happy were home.

Anywhere with them would be her home.

"I had sent all of our personal belongings on a separate plane — one that didn't get hijacked — so everything was still safe," Tony told her. Adelaide left him to slowly walk over to the sofa. She told herself it was real and then sat down on it, despite not being able to believe it.

She sunk into the familiar leather couch and closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath. Screw all of those medicines that she had to take, being home was making her feel instantly better. She finally felt like herself for the first time in months.
