In the next chapter they are off to college. But in this chapter, enjoy meeting Piper.

The dedication goes to hepburnettes, because I loved Breakup Formula.

Happy reading! :)

Chapter 2 – Calling it a night

Anton lets me settle in and then he goes to the pool. He says that if I want to join him, I have to go downstairs and walk left, because that is where the door to the backyard is.

I go to the bathroom to wash my face. The interior is red and white there, with a touch of black. There are candles that are black, rested on the sides of the bathtub. There is also a shower with blackened doors, I assume so no one can see in, but you can see out.

The towels are red and I don’t know which one I can use to rinse my face. I decide not to care. I turn the tap with a little blue circle on it to get cold water. It’s refreshing, almost icy and I splash my face with it. I look in the mirror, my face dripping and blindly reach for the towel. My hair is shorter than Anton’s, my eyes are dull grey and there’s is nothing handsome about me. I press my face in the towel and then return to the room.

I’m lost. It’s not my room and I don’t know how to act in it. I know there is no point in opening the sport’s bag, because I’ll be leaving tomorrow. There is no point in staying in the room longer. I don’t want to go swimming, so there is no need for me to change my clothes.

I leave the room and start going down the stairs, when footsteps resound from behind me. I glance over my shoulder. There is a little girl, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Her long thick curly red hair falls over her shoulders.

“You must be Piper,” I say kindly and wait for her to respond. She’s startled, but as soon as she notices my smile, and I’m trying my best not to come off as hostile, she smiles, too, and nods. “I’m Howard; it’s nice to meet you.”

She waves to me, the kind of wave where your fingers touch your palm, and giggles.

“Are you coming downstairs?” I ask, but she shakes her head, the curls bouncing from side to side, up and down. I have never seen hair as crazy as hers. “Okay,” I nod. “So maybe I’ll see you later, then?” She’s clutching her dark blue dress in her fists, her eyes wandering. Finally, she nods. “It’s a date,” I laugh, and she runs away, giggling.

My feet are heavy. It’s overwhelming meeting new people who you basically have to like, because they are your family, not that any of them is making the liking hard. Piper is adorable and Anton is so reckless with the people he doesn’t like, he makes me miss the days I was like that.

I find myself in the kitchen, which is connected with the living room. There is an island in the middle of the kitchen with bar stools on one side. The door leading outside is white, like most of what is in the house, except Anton’s room. The door is open, so I give it the last push with my shoe and step outside. Anton is on the inflatable mattress, which is pink, to my surprise. He’s wearing black sunglasses, his hair sticking to his forehead. But there is no sun. White puffy clouds have gathered in the sky and hidden the sun. And even if it were shining now, it would be setting soon.

“You found me,” he says without moving. His legs are crossed; his one hand is lazily in the water, the other resting on his stomach. I notice his knuckles are still a little bloody, but don’t mention it.

“Are you sun bathing your hand onto your stomach?” I ask and sit on one of the beach chairs.

He wants to sit up to look for himself, forgetting he’s on a mattress, and falls into the water with a splash. A moment later, he appears on the surface, pouting his lips. I can’t help but laugh.
