Sorry, it's been so long, but I graduated meanwhile, which was followed by two weeks of confusion and doing nothing. I'm trying to get back on track. Bear with me.

Happy reading :)

Chapter 31 – Sugarcoated

It is exciting. The room is glowing. Jocelyn is putting paper flowers on the walls and I'm trying to attach some of them to the lamp. I have mostly helped with cooking. We wanted a smaller gathering at the beginning of the evening and when we'd be done, other people could also show up, because as Jocelyn said, she wanted to meet people.

Music is playing and Jocelyn's dancing to the beat. The place looks prettier and even slightly elegant. We took the time to clean the rooms and dust the furniture, then we had to change a couple of light bulbs, but it is all good. The place is lit up and everything feels light, like it's hard to keep your feet on the ground, because suddenly there is so much hope.

The smell of pizza fills the rooms and my mouth is watering. The music plays over my growling stomach. Evan took Jocelyn's car and told he'd bring something from the town. He was still wearing that hideous coat, but he insisted it was perfect and comfortable.

"Turn that song up!" Jocelyn shouts from the other room, while I eye the pizza. Even though she is closer to the player, I walk to the living room; Jocelyn is standing on top of a chair and trying to put those paper flowers everywhere; pink, red and yellow flowers. I personally invited Emma and she said she'd come if nothing else showed up. She had seemed sad. Jocelyn didn't want to talk about it, about Emma. Jocelyn said that we have done everything and tough love was the only way now.

I heard Alyssa and Brent were supposed to come. I had invited Abby, the girl I had kissed at one party, the red-haired one. She was very excited and told that she would spread the word about the party we would be having later. Evan had announced with a smirk that he was also bringing someone, but later in the evening. At first, he just wanted to meet our friends, not that I had many, but Jocelyn had some. I hoped Evan wouldn't wear that coat to our get-together, but I was going against all odds, and I would probably lose.

I turn the volume button and Jocelyn nods happily. She sings along and climbs down the chair. Her bare feet make a noise against the floor; her hair is wild around her face, but her eyes are bright. She takes the chair back to the kitchen and I follow her there, where I lean against the sink. "Is everything ready?" she asks pouring juice in the cups.

I walk around in the living room, hands in jeans' pockets and sigh. "I'm really not a party planner," I reply. "I don't know how everything's supposed to be." Jocelyn laughs and I hear her close the fridge.

"All I hear is 'I am too lazy to help you'," she says as she appears from the kitchen and licks her lip, because a drop of juice lingered there. "Fine, I'll do my best. Just go outside then or something. Warn me in case anyone shows up."

So I go away. Jocelyn is running around and dancing and making sure everything is perfect. I sit on the balcony and stare at the road that leads to the campus. A slight breeze moves the tops of trees. Then I see something dark moving on the horizon on the road. I can tell from the weird colour that it's Evan with his ugly coat. He seems happy, a full smile on his face and it looks like he's humming a song.

He waves when he notices me and I nod my head. He swings his hands in his coat's pockets which makes him look silly. I smirk.

"What, no party?" he asks as he ascends the steps of the balcony. "Jocelyn kicked you out?"

"Yeah, I wasn't much of a help," I shrug. "She told me to warn her when someone showed up."

"I'm not much of a someone," Evan smiles. "You don't have to. Let her do her thing, we can hang out here." He sits next to me in a chair and leans back. "Are you going to introduce me to all of your friends?"
