includes some America history.

When the white settlers came to North America, 50-60 milllion Bison grazed on the prairies between Alaska and Northeast Mexico. In huge migrations - often in herds of millions they wandered south in the winter and north in the summer. They provided the basis of existence for many native american tribes an example the Lakota tribe used every material from a dingle bison to make everything they needed to survive.

These magnificent animals were almost exterminated within only a few decades through the settlers' use of modern firearms.

William F. Cody, known as "Buffalo Bill", alone killed over 4,000 animals in 18 months during the construction of the Kansas-Pacific railroad.

When the killing was stopped in 1890, no more than 1,000 bison still existed. Since that time on they have been strictly protected. Slowly their numbers are growing so that now there are more than 50,000 animals living on ranches and in national parks. This is an example of how a species can be saved at the last and over time with strict protections can become stable again.
