I slashed the air repeatedly with a sword made out of swirling shadows.
Dark swirls of mist emitted from the sword, like the smoke of a flame.
Each slash grew quicker and more precise the more I practiced.
"You sure are hard at work tonight," Jason said, breaking my flow.
He laughed nervously.
"Sorry."
Sighing, I dispersed the shadows I had gathered.
"Is something the matter?"
He took a step back.
"You seem awfully cold. Did I do something bad?"
He paused.
"It's definitely not your birthday, or the anniversary of the day we met."
Laughter escaped my lips.
"We've known each other since before we could even remember! How would you know the day we met?"
A handsome grin covered my friend's face.
"That's more like it. So, what's bothering you this time?"
I stared at the hand where the shadow sword once was.
"I want to get stronger. I'm nowhere near as strong as I want to be."
Jason stepped forward.
"I see. Then, how about I be your sparring partner? Practicing with another is more beneficial than alone."
