Ben's already back to work, which he doesn't want to be because "he just wants to spend time with his girls." But I told him he had to go considering the email he got was very threatening. Carolynn is amazing. She's perfect, she barely cries. She's probably the easiest baby ever. Now don't get me wrong I love her so much, but she's just so boring. It's the same thing everyday: wake her up, change her, feed her, change her again, put her down for a nap, and then the cycle just starts all over again.
To be honest I just need to get out of the house! So obviously I took her with me to go see Ben. I put her in her car seat and then started driving.
We got to Bens work place and walked in. "Hey! What are you guys doing here?" Ben asked. Was I trying to avoid him so he wouldn't tell me to go back home and rest? Yes and? "Hey!" I said awkwardly. "Babe, what are you doing here?" he asked.
"I just thought you'd want to see the baby." I said, holding Carolynn. "That's really sweet of you but I did just see her like an hour ago." Ben said, playing with Carolynns hands. (seriously she's so small!!) I smiled, "I know, but look at this one. You can't get enough of this little nugget." I said, rocking her in my arms.
He sighed, "I guess you can't." "Okay so we are just going to see Natalie and check out what's going on down there." I said. "Really, with all the germs and the people?" he said. I sighed. "I'll walk you out." he said. "Who wants to see daddy?" I said in my baby voice while giving her over to Ben. "Hey sweetheart." Ben said to Carolynn.
"Okay, now bring her back when she's hungry!" I said before walking away. "Al- Ally c'mon!" he called out. I walked over to where Natalie was.
"Hey what are you doing here? Does Ben know you're here?" Natalie asked. "Yes. I brought Carolynn in and gave her to him and then I walked away." I said. "Are you bored staying at home all day?" she asked. "Yes! I love Carolynn but she's always sleeping or eating- oh my gosh and the messes she makes. HOW CAN SUCH A TINY PERSON MAKE SUCH A BIG MESS!" I said, laying my head on the table.
"Yeah I'm gonna call Ben now." she said. "No, please! If you call him he's gonna make me go home and then I'm gonna die of boredom." I said. "Hey aren't you writing a book?" she asked. "Yeah." I responded.
"Then why don't you work on that?" she said. "Because when I'm not feeding her or cleaning up her messes I'm checking on her to make sure her breathing is steady." I said, my head still on the desk.
Ben walked in, "She's hungry now." he said. "Round five." I whispered. "Hey princess!" I said while taking Carolynn. "Bye guys." Natalie said. "Bye Natalie." Ben and I said. "so are you bored in the house?" Ben asked. "Yes! I love Carolynn but she's always sleeping- I haven't slept in 36 hours because I've been checking on her. I'm so tired but I can't sleep and-"
He smiled, "How about I take you guys home and I stay with you for the rest of the day?" he said. "Ben, you don't have to." I said. "You need sleep, babe." he said. "Fine." I said. -------
-a month later because why not-
I'm back to working at The New York times! Ben is taking his paternity leave and I just really wanted to leave the house so I'm back to work- until I have to continue writing my book.
"Hey Ally!" one of my coworkers Emma said. "Hey!" I said. "So how are Carolynn and Ben?" she asked. "They're amazing! It's been two hours and I miss them already!" I said, thinking about my little girl. One month old already! A baby started crying. Some of my other coworkers brought their kids in so this wasn't unusual. "Aw, every time I hear a baby cry I think it's her- wait that really, really sounds like her." I said before turning around. I saw Ben holding our little girl and talking to the assistants.
I sighed and said "I have to go deal with this now, if you'll excuse me." "Hey bring her by later please!" she said. "I will Em." I said, walking over to my husband and my baby.
"Hey what are you guys doing here!" I said, smiling. "It's bring your daughter to work day." Ben said, smiling. "No it's not." I said while taking Carolynn out of the baby carrier. "I gave her a bath, I changed her, fed her, gave her another bath after she threw up on herself, changed her again, and then we read some books, and it was still only 11:00. I needed some adult contact." he said, playing with Carolynns little hands.
I was holding Carolynn in my arms. I smiled at Ben. "Please take this baby away from me." I said, smiling at Carolynn as she slept. "Sure." Ben said.
"I'm serious, take her Ben, take her. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. This baby's crack, she's a crack baby." I said, as she squeezed my finger. Ben chuckled and said "You shouldn't call her that." "Ally we need you for a story." Emma said.
"Okay. Oh, I love you, but mommy's gotta go to work. Take her Ben." I said. "Give me the baby." "Physically lift her from my arms." Ben took her from my arms. She started crying. "Oh, no! I love you guys." I said. Ben smiled, "I love you too, now go to work!" he said. I kissed him and then kissed Carolynns cheek, "Bye." -------
After four hours I was finally done with my article. Ben and Carolynn were still at the office. "Hey!" I said. "Hey! You done here already?" Ben whispered. "Yes, and why are you whispering?" I whispered back to him. He pointed down at Carolynn who was sleeping against Bens chest.
Oh, she's perfect! I thought to myself. "You ready to go?" he asked. "Yes but first Emma wants to see Carolynn before we leave." I said, taking Carolynn from Ben. "Okay let's go then." he said.
We walked over to Emmas office. I knocked. "Hey Em, we have some visitors." I said while walking in with Ben and my little princess.
"Hi! Oh my gosh! She's so cute!" Emma said. "I wholeheartedly agree." I said, holding Carolynn.
