MABILIS AKONG naglakad papunta sa elevator na maghahatid saakin sa office ng president. Ni hindi ko alam kung bakit niya ako pinatawag. Bigla akong kinabahan nang nasa loob na ako ng elevator papunta sa top floor ng kompanyang pinagta-trabahuhan ko.
I am the head of engineering department on the real estate I'm working. Kahit na limang taon palang akong graduate ng college ay mabilis akong na-promote sa posisyon ko ngayon. Maybe because I was here when the company is at its lowest. Bagong tayo palang ang kompanyang ito noong nag-apply ako. At kahit kakapasa ko lang sa board exam noon ay tinanggap agad nila ako. And now, I'm the head of the engineering department.
Nang makapasok ako sa pinto ng opisina ng president ng kompanya ay tumambad saakin ang sekretarya niya na nakaupo sa table nito.
"Good morning Ms. Padilla. Mr. De Leon is waiting for you inside." Nakangiting bungad saakin ni Grace, ang sekretarya ng presidente. Kahit na kinakabahan ay nagawa ko pang ngumiti at bumati sakaniya. Iginaya niya ako sa isa pang pinto kung saan naroon ang main office ng president and CEO ng kompanya. Nagpasalamat muna ako kay Grace bago ako pumasok.
"Good moring, Mr. De Leon." Bati ko nang tuluyan na akong makapasok. Naglakad ako ako papunta sa harap ng table niya. Mr. Conrad De Leon is a great engineer and a business man in his mid-fifties. At his age, he's still rocking on that corporate suit. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't have a crush on him or something. He's married and a father of two already! That would be err...
"Good morning, Spica. Please take a seat." Nakangiting bati niya saakin. I immediately sat on the visitor's chair. Hindi ko alam kung bakit kanina pa ako kinakabahan. I mean, I already met the CEO many times already. We met and talk on meeting and such. Kahit noong nasa college pa 'ko. So I don't really understand kung bakit ako kinakabahan.
Mr. de Leon has always been friendly towards his employees kaya hindi masyadong nakaka-intimidate. Kaya hindi ko alam kung bakit kanina pa nanginginig ang mga tuhod ko. Is he going to fire me or something? Oh God...
"I'm sorry to call you this early, Spica. I just want to personally discuss to you your next project." He smiled apologetically. Para bang nakahinga ako ng maluwag nang banggitin niya ang salitan next project at discuss. Akala ko kung ano na! I was nervous for nothing! Ngumiti muna ako bago ako sumagot.
"Okay lang po, sir. Besides, it's already office hours." He just nodded. May nilapag siyang itim na folder sa harap ko. Ito na ata yung details para sa sunod kong project. He told me to open it and I was right. It was the details for my next project. Binasa ko kung anong klaseng project ba ang iha-handle ko. Agad na nanlaki ang mata ko sa nabasa ko. A hospital!
"So as you can see, Spica, this is a very big project for us. Ito ang unang pagkakataon na kukuha tayo ng ganito kalaking project. It was a construction for the renovation of the hospital. You know that our company is not accepting this kind of projects. But the offer is big and I have thought that it's time to take big projects like this. Besides, marami na tayong magagaling na architects at engineers. And I want you and your team to personally handle this project." Tuloy-tuloy na sabi ni Mr. De Leon.
I was still shocked! He is giving this project to me and my team! Oh my gosh! This is a big opportunity for me, for my team and the company!
The CEO was right. Hindi kami tumatanggap dati ng ganitong mga projects dahil kulang pa ang man power namin. Kakasimula palang ng kompanya noon at halos lahat ay baguhan pa sa larangang ito. Pero iba na ngayon, we are one of the rising companies in this field. And I am rpoud to say that I am here since the beginning. I smiled at that thought. I turned to the CEO.
"Kailan ang first meeting with the client, sir?" He smiled at what I said. It's a sign that I am accepting the project.
"Good. The first meeting will be next week. Mismong director ng hospital ang makakausap mo. Architect Guzman will be going with you. I already told him about this and he said yes. You two can build your team for this project. I wish you a good luck, Spica." I nodded. We discussed more details about the project. And so far, nagustuhan ko naman ang mga initial plans para roon. After an hour, or so, na meeting ay nagpaalam na ako para pumunta sa office ni Architect Guzman.
Architect Alonzo Guzman is a friend I meet in college. He was from UST, far from the university I'm currently studying at that moment, but we met through a common friend. Alonzo and I remained friends after college. And eventually, he became my closest friend at work.
"Oh my gosh, Alonzo!" I opened the door of his office without even knocking. Some people might find it rude. Pero dahil close kami, okay lang 'yon. He does that to me either.
"Ever heard of the word knocking, Spica?" He said boredly. I just rolled my eyes at him. He was typing something on his laptop. But I didn't care. I sat on the visitor's chair in front of me.
"Hey stop working! You already received the news, right?" I said excitedly, not minding all the papers and sketches on his table. Alam kong busy siya at medyo nakaka-istorbo ako pero I am just too excited! And I know he doesn't mind if I disturbed him. He's like this to me either.
"Yeah." He closed his laptop and faced me with a smirk on his face. "Alam mo ba kung saan ang project na 'yon, hmm?" He asked, that smirk is still on his face, obviously teasing me. Napaisip ako. Come to think of it, hindi ko nga pala binasa kung saan ang location ng project. Was I too excited?
"Saan ba?" He laughed before answering me.
"Near Katipunan."
Shit.
"And do you know what hospital?" He asked. Umiiling ulit ako. How can I miss all these important details? Am I really too excited? Is this why I am nervous earlier? Oh God...
"St. Luke's Doctors Hopital."
Double shit.
"And do you know who will attend the meeting next week?" Muli akong umiling. Oh my fucking gosh! I can't believe I missed all these information! He looked at me ridiculously before answering.
"Si Dr. Luthor de Leon ang makaka-meeting natin next week." He said with a smirk. Tuluyan nang nanginig ang tuhod ko. What the fuck? Why the hell is this happening? I looked at him with piercing eyes.
"Are you making fun of me?" He just laughed at my question as if I was joking! Gosh! This guy!
"I'm not, Spica. Bakit ba kasi 'di mo binasang mabuti yung nasa loob ng folder?" He looked at my folder. Tinignan ko rin ito na para bang nakasalalay doon ang buhay ko. Lihim akong napamura. Not because my life was really depended on it but because I'm such an idiot that I didn't read the documents! I was too excited and overwhelmed because of the project that I didn't even read the papaers inside this folder!
"But he's not the director. Mr. de Leon said that we will be meeting the director." I managed to said, calmly. Alonzo looked at me like I am the dumbest of all dumbs.
"The director's secretary emailed me today. Saying that the director has a meeting oversees so can't meet us. He'll send his son instead." Napasapo ako sa noo ko. Para bang bigla itong sumakit. "Besides, Luthor is one of the major stockholders of the hospital and maybe the next director. It's okay kung siya ang makaka-meeting natin. Maliban nalang kung..."
"Ofcourse not!" I didn't mean to sound defensive but I actually sound like it! Argh! At mas lalo lamang akong nainis nang tumawa ng malakas si Alonzo.
"I didn't say anything, okay! Chill, Spica! HAHA! Hindi naman natin siya makakasama araw-araw so calm the fuck down." He tried to be serious but he can't surpass the laugh he's trying to hide. I just rolled my eyes and stormed out of his office. Naiinis na ko at baka mahampas ko pa si Alonzo ng mga blueprint kaya umalis nalang ako roon.
Bumalik na ako sa sariling opisina at pinag-isipan ang mga nangyari ngayon. This is so not happening! I am, I mean, We are meeting with Dr. Luthor de Leon next week. Napasapo ako sa noo ko.
