"How important?"

"Really, really, really important. Please (Y/n)," the voice of your friend begged through the phone. You smiled and turned away from the aquarium you had been watching. You had already made your decision to accompany Dallon to his high school reunion as his girlfriend, which in reality you were not, but it was fun to have him beg a little longer. "They are all super big assholes; you know how they treated me back then. I just want to fool them, show them that they have no power over me anymore, make them a little jealous. Please (Y/n), just for that one evening!"

"Why would they be jealous," you suddenly wondered. You had assumed Dallon just did not want them to know he had no girlfriend, which, in their eyes, would make him look like a looser, even though you were not sure why someone would draw that conclusion from someone's relationship status. Why would they be jealous if they saw he was with you?

"Because you are hella hot? And super beautiful! And intelligent and funny and just all around perfect," Dallon bubbled. "Please (Y/n), come on. For me?"

You were slightly overwhelmed by Dallon's words. It had been a while since someone had paid you a compliment, so hearing such a list of positive attributes confused you slightly. You had never considered yourself any of the things Dallon had said, but it made you smile, knowing that he seemed to think that about you.

"And so are you, Dal," you answered, still a little dizzy from his words, "And trust me, I wouldn't have said no anyway."

~*~

You felt a little uncomfortable in the black heels you were wearing. They made you awfully aware of how rarely you wore them. Dallon had assured you that the event would be held in a casually-elegant style, so you had chosen a slim, black skirt paired with a pastel blue blouse and a dark blue cardigan. You walked over to the car, in which Dallon was waiting for you, suddenly realizing that this was actually happening, and for the first time since you had agreed to this little stunt, you started to panic slightly.

"You look amazing," grinned Dallon as he got out of the car, to open the door for you.

Your eyes quickly scanned his appearance. He was wearing a black suit with a white button-up, looking very presentable himself.

"So do you," you complimented and climbed into the car, smiling at Dallon who made sure you were safely inside before slamming the heavy door shut.

When he climbed in the driver's seat, he took a look at you, staring for a moment too long, as he realized, before he quickly averted his gaze.

"Sooo," you pulled the vocal out, shooting a glance at Dallon who started the motor and pulled out into the street, "how does Mr. Weekes imagine this little act to play out?"

Your question visibly distressed Dallon, his knuckles turning white as his grip around the steering wheel tightened, and bit his lip.

"I thought, you know, the usual story? Friends to lovers, kind of," he explained, keeping his eyes fixed on the road, knowing you were watching him carefully.

"Okay," you shrugged and turned a little sideways, so you were looking out of your window, "the 'we went to a party together, and I wanted to dance but no one would dance with me, so you did and then a slow song came on, and we kissed because secretly we've been in love the whole time' story?"

"Yeah, kinda like that," Dallon answered, sounding relieved that you were playing along so well.

"What kind of guy are you when it comes to relationships? Lots of pda?"

"Uhm," Dallon thought about your question for a moment, setting the blinker in the meantime, "I never really thought about it, I guess..."

You tried to recall what you knew about Dallon when it came to relationships.

You had known each other for years, been close friends equally as long, but somehow you could not think about a single time you had seen him with anyone. And he had been in no relationship either, not one in all the years. Well, then again neither had you.

"I think hand holding, maybe a bit of hugging," he finally answered the question you had almost forgotten you had asked.

"Okay," you agreed, only half listening to what he was saying while your mind was trying to figure out why he had not had any relationship since he had met you.

It wasn't like there would have been a lack of opportunities for him. He was gorgeous, and you regularly went out together. Often girls walked up to him, tried to chat him up, but he never had danced with one of them, kissed them, or had taken one home. Never. Why was that?

On the other hand, the answer to why you had not been in a relationship since you had met Dallon was easier though, for you at least. You had a terrible crush on your best friend. Well, it had been a crush. By now you were just totally in love with him, but had accepted the fact that these feelings would be forever unrequited. That was also the reason your heart had totally lost its shit after that phone call with Dallon a few days ago.

Not much later Dallon pulled into the parking lot in front of a building that had a sign saying "rooms for events" next to the entrance.

The parking lot was already occupied by about twenty other cars, all rather fancy, as you noticed, and you started feeling like your original thought about why Dallon did not want to go on his own might not have been so wrong after all.

Dallon helped you out of the car, offered his arm for you to link yours with, and led you to the building.

Together you entered a hallway, and followed a red sign that said "High School Reunion" until you were standing in front of a wooden double door from behind which music and the chatter of people sounded into the hallway.

You looked up at Dallon, noticing how he had suddenly stiffened.

"Do you want to leave," you offered, gently placing your hand on the man's arm.

It took him a moment, then he looked down to you. His blue eyes carried so many emotions that it almost took your breath away. He was scared, but determined to face that fear, which, most likely, came in the form of his former classmates. But he was thankful too, thankful to have you by his side; and you understood that maybe he had just been scared to go in there alone.

"No, I have to do this," he explained, "I have to face them."

You nodded and smiled encouragingly; giving Dallon all the time he needed before he reached to the door handle, and pressed it down, quickly pushing the door open.

The room in front of you was the size of a small gym. In the middle of the room was a big dancefloor with colorful, blinking lights flickering over the dancing couples in sync with the music. Around the dancefloor, tables had been put up. Some of these tables were the small, but high kind, and people had grouped around these, helping themselves to the snacks that were served. The rest of the tables were normal tables like you could find them in cafés, all of them equipped with several chairs. At the back of the hall there was a buffet, offering different kinds of salads, small sandwiches, vegetables, pastries and deserts. Between the guests, all of them dressed at least as nicely as you, waiters dressed in black and white hurried around, taking orders for drinks, or serving them.

"Champagne?"

One of the waiters had turned up right in front of you, holding a tablet with several glasses; each one filled with a slightly beige colored, clear, bubbly liquid.

Putting on a smile you declined politely for both you and Dallon, when you noticed that he was far too busy looking around the crowd, as if trying to determine where the biggest threats in the room were. The waiter noticed your concerned expression towards your companion, and shot you an encouraging nod before hurrying off.

"Come on," you whispered, gently guiding Dallon away from the door, and to one of the tall tables.

"This is like my worst nightmare," he told you, finally pulling away from the sight of the crowd.

"But at least I'm here," you reminded him with a wink, a wink that caused the worried look in his eyes to melt away immediately.

"Yes, yes you are."

He reached out his hand for you, and pulled you closer to him, searching the security of your presence.

Your racing heart had just started to calm down, when suddenly someone called Dallon's name.

Alarmed he turned around, and for a split second something like annoyance flickered over his face, before he put on a forced smile.

"Alan," he noted, referring to the broad-shouldered man who had approached him.

Next to Alan stood a tall, lean woman in a tight, sliver dress wearing too much make up. Behind the couple a group of six more people was facing you. If you were reading the situation correctly, this Alan and the three men, as well as the woman in the silver dress, and the one standing closest to her, had all been friends in school. The other two women did not seem to fit in so easily. One even looked slightly uncomfortable.

"How's my old friend doing," Alan asked cheerfully, his smile showing too many teeth, while he patted Dallon's shoulder.

For a few seconds, Dallon disapprovingly looked down to where Alan was patting him rather forcefully, until the man got the message, and pulled his hand away.

"I'm doing very well, thank you," Dallon smilingly answered, his hand sneaking around your waist.

"Oh, and who is this beautiful lady," Alan asked, his eyes scanning you with a lustful glint in his eyes.

You would have loved to either punch the smug grin off of his face, or run away, or preferably both, but because you did not want to embarrass Dallon, you did neither.

Instead you ignored the judging glares of the two women you assumed knew each other from school, and answered politely, but coldly.

"I'm (y/n), nice to meet you."

"I see you got yourself a little girlfriend," Alan laughed, turning around to his friends who also started laughing at his signal, "was about time, we already thought you were gay!"

You felt Dallon's grip around your waist tighten as you knew he was trying to decide between "So what if I were?" and-

"Yeah, she's amazing," he smiled, pressing a kiss to your hair.

"So what do you do these days, hm?"

The question had been asked by one of the guys behind Alan.

"I'm making music," Dallon answered, and even though that was one of the things he was the proudest of, he was still tensing up even more.

"Music? Really," the woman in the silver dress cackled.

"Yeah," Dallon nodded, trying to keep his façade up.

"What kind of music," Alan challenged.

"The good kind," you interrupted before Dallon had even opened the mouth. "Can we dance, please? You know I love this song!"

You had pushed yourself between Dallon and the others, your back facing them while your chest was pressing against his. With puppy eyes you looked up at him, which immediately caused Dallon to smile fondly.

"Yes, let's dance," he agreed, taking you by the hand, and pulled you onto the dancefloor, leaving his former classmates standing where they were.

The song was quick, upbeat, so Dallon took both your hands, and together you danced for a while, not caring who saw you, or how you looked, while you made fools out of yourselves.

Dallon had just led you into a spinning motion that ended up with your back against his chest, when suddenly the music changed to a slow romantic song.

You hesitated, uncertain what Dallon wanted to do, but when his hands let go of yours and wandered down to your hips, you knew that he was not intending to leave the dancefloor. Instead he turned you around so you were facing him again, and wrapped his arms around you.

A smile played around your lips as you placed one of your own hands on his chest, and reached the other one up to his neck, gently pressing your fingertips into his tense muscles. When Dallon looked at you, his blue eyes were soft and dreamy. None of the negative feelings from minutes ago were present anymore as his eyes met yours. It felt like a spell had been cast over the two of you as the world around you faded into the background, leaving only each other in focus.

You realized you had never really looked into someone's eyes as intensely as you did now. It felt as if Dallon was seeing into your very soul, while spilling some of his own best kept secrets, but they were written in cryptic letters, and you could not quite decipher them.

You did not really notice that Dallon had moved his hand up to your neck, only that his long, slim fingers left warm traces on the skin of your nape. Very carefully he turned your head so you were not only looking at him from under your lashes but directly. You closed your eyes, scared you might give away too much if you allowed him to read your heart for any longer, and moments later warm, soft lips pressed against yours gently. The breath hitched in your throat at the sensation, but you kissed him back, a little more demanding, a little more eager than he had started out. That your reaction was anything but unwelcome to him, was displayed in the tiny gasp that escaped him as he pulled you closer into his body.

The magic moment of your kiss was burst, when the song changed from the slow tune to something fast that surprised both of you.

"What was that about dancing because I wanted to, and then a slow song came on, and we danced and kissed, because we had been secretly in love with each other," you asked, referring to the story you had made up earlier in the car.

Dallon giggled; a sound that went straight to your heart. He wrapped an arm around your waist, and guided you off the dancefloor.

"A prophecy, as it seems," he laughed, nuzzling his nose into your hair. "How about we get out of here, go someplace actually nice, like... that ice cream shop around the corner of your house?"

You grinned at that suggestion, remembering how that was actually where your friend Ryan had introduced the two of you.

"Sounds perfect," you smiled, snuggling into Dallon's side.

When you strode towards the door, you saw Alan and his friends look at you in confusion and annoyance, probably because they were sad that they had not gotten any more opportunities to make Dallon feel bad about himself, but you ignored them, and instead nuzzled your nose against this shirt, deeply inhaling his scent.

You glanced up at Dallon's happy smile as he walked you out of the building to his car. Yeah, the whole "friends to lovers"-story was probably pretty cliché, but honestly, you really did not care, as long as it meant that Dallon got to be happy. And it even had the positive side effect that he was happy because of you, that you were happy because of each other.
