Laura Barnes, the 22-year-old daughter of Bucky Barnes, has been dating the 24-year-old Jake Stark, the son of the billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist Tony Stark, for two years. Without her father knowing because he's a sweet cinnamon bun who didn't suspect anything about the two of them.
Well, one day, Jake and Laura were out on a date. Just the two of them. They were out for the whole day, just spending it together. They were walking through the park at night when they stopped by the pond. Laura turned away from Jake, talking about the plants and stuff, and talking about her plans for her students. She was a kindergarten teacher. Jake laughed at her excitement. Which caused her to turn around and gasp slightly when she saw him down on one knee with a ring box in his hand, opened and revealing a beautiful diamond ring. Tears came to her eyes and she clasped her hands over her mouth.
"Oh my god..." She breathed
"Laura, you've made me the happiest man alive for the last two years. We've laughed together. Cried together, joked with each other. Snuggled on our bad days. And all the other cute stuff we did together. What I'm trying to say is, I love you so much and you make me really happy. Would you make me even happier and marry me?" Jake asked with a hopeful smile on his face.
Laura stood still for a moment and then nodded, bringing her hands down from her face.
"Yes. I will marry you." She said through some tears and laughed happily. Jake slid the ring on her finger and grinned. He got up and kissed her deeply which she returned as she wound her arms around his neck.
They pulled away and rested their foreheads together and grinned. Jake reached up and wiped the tears from her face. They laughed a little and Laura pulled her hand between them so she could admire her ring. Jake watched as her eyes sparkled with happiness and the lights around them.
"Let's head back to the tower," Jake suggested quietly.
"Yeah. We gotta tell everyone." Laura smiled happily. Jake nodded and grabbed her hand and the two of them walked back to the tower happily.
As soon as they arrived, Laura ran to the main room where the Avengers were gathered. Jake following with a small chuckle. Laura bounced excitedly as she blocked the tv from everyone and Tony turned it off with a knowing smile.
"Ok. You seem like you have some news." Bucky chuckled at how excited she was.
"Yeah! We do!" Laura giggled and Jake stood behind her with his arms wrapped around her waist and he kissed her temple with the team watching. Bucky tensed slightly, having a feeling on what she's going to say.
"Well come on. Don't keep us waiting." Steve chuckled with a smile.
"We're engaged!" Laura squealed and showed her left hand with the beautiful engagement ring sparkling from her finger.
The team, except Bucky, broke out into cheers and congratulated the couple with hugs and smiles. Bucky stood and walked over to Laura. He grabbed her arm gently and pulled her to his room silently. As soon as he closed the door, he turned to her with a glare on his face.
"Why didn't you tell me you two were together?" He asked, deadly calm.
"Because I knew you'd freak out like you are right now." Laura crossed her arms over her chest.
"So? Don't you think I outta know about you dating a playboy's son!?" Bucky voice rose some.
"No! You don't have to know everything about my life!" Laura responded with the same volume of voice.
"But I'm your father!" Bucky yelled.
"So! I am a 22-year-old woman! I can decide things for myself!" She yelled back.
The two of them then got into a screaming match and Laura walked out of the room, with Bucky behind her as the two of them yelled at each other.
The team just watched as the father and daughter fought over what was right for her. Then Jake stepped in.
"Look, Mr. Barnes. Maybe you shouldn't be so overprotective of Laura." Jake said and stood next to his fiancée. He held onto her hand gently.
This. Made Bucky Furious.
"YOU! CAN NOT MARRY MY DAUGHTER!" He yelled at byte
That was enough for Laura. Tears came to her eyes.
"You never want what I want. I guess you never want me to be happy." She mumbled as she stares at her father.
"What?" Bucky whispered as his glare dissipated.
Laura walked by him and Bucky tried to grab her arm gently but she pulled her arm away from him as she stalked to the elevator. Jake following behind her.
The last thing Bucky saw before the elevator doors closed was Laura as tears streamed down her face as she hugged herself tightly as Jake rubbed her back.
Bucky slumped onto the couch and put his head in his hands. Guilt washed over him as Laura's words replayed in his mind over and over and over again.
"What did I just do?" He mumbled to himself.

The next morning, Laura was on her way to work to the elementary school where she was to teach a class of darling cute little children. She couldn't wait to see her students. She was humming along to the music in the car and she reached over to her purse for something as she crossed an intersection. Her car slowed as she wasn't paying attention, giving the chance for a drunk driver to run a red light and speed right towards her.
She looked up just in time to see the car before her car was t-boned. She screamed and threw her hands up over her face to protect her head. The car began to flip and her head bounced off her headrest and the window. Incapacitating her. The car stopped rolling and laid on its top as the airbag deployed and smashed against her ribs. Laura groaned as pain radiated through her body.
Black spots began to cloud her vision. She called out weekly for help and she heard footsteps running towards her car. She saw someone crouch down by her window with a phone pressed to their ear. The last thing she heard before her vision was consumed by a black cloud was the sound of distant sirens.

Jake waited for a text that Laura arrived at work. But he didn't get one. Instead, he got a call.
"Hey. Did you get to work ok?" Jake immediately asked. But it wasn't Laura who answered.
"Hello? Is this Jake Stark?" A different woman asked.
"Yes? Is Laura alright?" Jake quickly asked.
"She got into an accident and it being taken to the hospital right now." The woman said.
"I'll be there soon. Thank you for the call." Jake said and the lady hung up. Jew broke down into tears as he sank to the floor.

Laura was being loaded into an ambulance as paramedics rushed to stabilize her. She has dried blood under her nose, scratches all over her face and arms from the glass, the medics were pretty sure she had some cracked ribs and a broken arm and shattered knee, and she was fading in and out of consciousness. They were lucky enough to get her name and Jake's name from her as she was fading in and out.
They got her in the ambulance and off it went to the hospital, sirens blaring as they screeched through the city.

Jake pulled up to the tower after debating if he should tell Bucky what happened and he decided to do it for Laura's sake. He walked into the tower and straight to Bucky. Sniffling as he walked. Tony stopped him on the way.
"Hey kiddo, what's wrong?" Tony asked gently once he caught sight of his son's red, puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks.
"W-where's Bu-Bucky?" Jake hiccuped slightly.
"He's in the training room. But sit and tell me what's wrong." Tony said and led his son to the kitchen and sat him on a stool.
Jake nodded and explained what happened. He finished just as Bucky walked in.
Bucky caught sight of Jake's face and distraught mood that seemed to darken the room a bit. A single tear ran down his cheek.
"What's wrong?" Bucky asked.
"Laura... She got into an accident on the way to work... She's at the hospital now... The doctors don't know her condition fully yet." Jake mumbled as more tears fell from his eyes as he broke down again. Tony quickly rounded the counter and wrapped his son in a hug.
Bucky felt his heart crack and drop. His little girl, his darling, his baby doll, has just been in an accident and her condition hasn't been determined yet. And he couldn't help but worry. Bucky's breathing became unsteady a little bit and he felt tears come to his eyes. But he held them back. He had to be strong. For Jake, and for Laura.
Bucky went over and hugged his soon-to-be son-in-law. Jake hugged onto Bucky tightly as the worse case scenarios swirled in his head. The two men grieved and then got around to go to the hospital. The drive was silent.
As soon as they got there, they were taken back to Laura's room. Once there, they took in her bruised and unconscious form.
Laura had a cast around her right knee, some deep bruises on her arm along with some scratches, some scratches on her face, along with a black eye. A breathing and feeding tube down her throat. The heart monitor beeped steadily and her chest rose and fell slowly. Jake took a seat on her left side while Bucky sat on her right.
The both of them broke down at the sight of Laura. A doctor came in after a while and told them that she, was in a coma. And there was no telling of how long she was going to be out.
Jake held her hand and ran his thumb over her hand gently. Bucky held her other hand carefully and he ran his flesh thumb over her knuckles.
"I'm sorry." Bucky suddenly spoke to Jake.
"For what?" Jake sniffled.
"You are fit to marry Laura. I just didn't see it at first and I'm sorry for what I said last night." Bucky explained.
"It's alright. I'm sorry for what I said too. I shouldn't have done it." Jake apologized and the two men made up and there was no more fighting between them. For Laura's sake.

A month went by and Laura didn't move an inch. The team came to see her and her students made cards and other things for her that Jake picked up from the school every week. Bucky and Jake haven't left her side much. They always made sure someone was in the room with her. Jake and Bucky even talked to her all the time, in hopes that she would wake up someday.
And that day came. On her birthday. Her hands began to move and she tried to reach up to pull the tube from her throat. But Bucky stopped her while Jake called for a doctor. A doctor and a few nurses came in and shooed the men out while they for Laura calmed down and the tube out of her throat.
Once they were done, they were allowed back into the room. Jake ran over and wrapped her in a tight yet gentle hug because she had some cracked ribs. He cried into her shoulder as he hugged her. Relieved that she was ok.
He pulled back and Laura put her hands on his face and brought him to her lips for a kiss. Bucky then went in for a hug to his little girl. He kissed her forehead and held her close gently. He pulled away and looked her over.
"I'm so sorry for what I said last night. I do want you to be happy. I was just scared that I was gonna lose my little girl." Bucky said to Laura after looking at her for a minute.
"It's ok. I get it. You're my dad and always looking out for me." Laura said with a small smile and kissed Bucky's cheek. He smiled and sat down on the bed, with Jake on the other side.
They spent the rest of the day just talking to her and making sure she was ok and all that jazz. And while Laura was at the hospital, her students all came to say hi and give her the little gifts they made.
Laura recovered well and she was able to go back to school and finish teaching for the school year. She was always going to have a slight limp, no matter what. But she was finally ok.
Laura and Jake got married during the summer and were happy together. A year after their marriage, they were expecting a baby! Bucky and Tony both fainted when they found out they were going to be grandfathers.
And nine months after that, Laura gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby girl. Who Laura and James named Rebecca Maria Stark. To honor Bucky's sister and Tony's mom. She grew up to be a strong independent woman who became an 8 Ph.D. holding, world known scientist and technician. Tony was proud because she got his brain. But Laura and Jake were proud because of who she grew up to be.
And all was well with Laura, Jake, Bucky, Tony, the team, and Rebecca as life went on. And Laura was happy with her family. And she was happy being Their Only Girl in the World to Bucky and Jake.
