If you are a singer or have ever been choir or a musical, you know how important warning up your voice is.
Here are a few tips and warmups you can do easily anywhere at anytime!
1.) Your Voice
• your voice is very unique and different from everyone else's. You may think you sound like someone else, but really that means you have the same voice color as that person.
For instance, for Broadway casting the directors look for someone who can not only portray the character well, but has the same voice color. Now these voices won't be the exact same (that would be boring!) but they will be similar and use the same technique.
2.) Vocal Range
• There are several terms for vocal range. For women:
Soprano (High)
Mezzo (a little high and low)
Alto (low)
For men:
Tenor
Baritone
Bass
To figure out which you are may seem a little stressful, but here are some ways to help. First off, which note are easiest for you to sing? If you feel much more comfortable singing lower notes or in your chest voice, you will probably be an alto. For a soprano, if your throat starts to hurt after singing low notes or in your chest voice in a higher range, you should stick to (BUT DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF!!) to singing the more soprano-y arias.
3.) Warm Ups
• Okay, yawning is your friend. Before you try and sing, open your mouth wide and give an awesome yawn. It will expand your throat and make your sound better.
• Altos: Scales, but start higher and go to lower notes. You can also start low and see how high your belt goes!
• Sopranos: practice low notes too, but focus more on your head voice sound, don't strain your voice!
