"You can't really see it, but there's a window to my right," James said, explaining his new bedroom.
"Very nice," You commented, staring down at your keyboard.
About a half hour ago, you got a Skype call from none-other than James Horan himself. This wasn't the first, though. Ever since the boys landed home in Ireland, they've been calling and texting and Skyping you. They're still keeping you busy, even when they're not next door.
You'd been trying really hard not to think about it too much. You knew that they weren't close to you, and that you couldn't go see them whenever you wanted to. But you didn't let that fill your mind. You just pushed it aside and chose to not think about it.
"Hey, here comes Niall," James beamed, moving aside so that Niall could fit in the frame. Immediately your face lit up, and you gave him a quick wave.
"Niall! How's it been?" You chirped.
There was a bit of a delay in the audio because, after all, they were quite a long distance from you. In a second or two, Niall answered.
"Ah, ya know. Sad," He put on his sad face, and pretended to cry. "I miss you sooooo much, (Y/N)."
You felt your heart flutter. "I miss you too, Nialler. And you too, James!"
James nodded while Niall continued to frown. "So, uh, can I ask you something?" James said after clearing his throat.
You took a deep breath and answered, "Shoot."
"Well, we were just wondering, has anyone moved in yet?"
It was silent between you and them for a while. You let your eyes fall to your lap, where your hands were folded together. You sighed. "Not yet." You didn't bother to look up at them before adding, "But someone is supposed to move in by the end of the month."
Niall looked away and James let out a small whine. "Niall, that's our house!" He angrily shouted.
"I know, mate," Niall said. "I know."
You could feel the mood change instantly and it was no longer a happy conversation, but a frustrated one. "If it makes you feel any better, I don't have plans to get to know the people who move in. They'll just be neighbors, nothing like what you guys were."
"Is it a family?" James asked.
"I heard there's three people. Uh, a mom, a dad, and a kid. But I don't know if the kid is a boy or a girl. And I don't know the age."
"They're Americans?"
"Well, I would assume so. It's not very often that a bunch of Ireland natives move to a city like this," You chuckled, but immediately regretted saying that when both Niall and James groaned, shifting in their seats.
At that moment, your mom walked in with a plate of watermelon. "I just cut some melon. Thought you might like some," She smiled, handing you the plate.
"Thanks, Mom."
She nodded and left the room, getting the hint that you weren't really up for talking. "So, tell me about your bedroom Niall," You said, grabbing a piece of watermelon and leaning back in your spot.
"It looks a lot like James'. It's just that mine has a tad bigger closet. Which I am taking total advantage of and storing all my snapbacks in!" Niall grinned.
"With all of those; you'll need the extra space!" You laughed. "So, how's Ireland? Getting used to everything again?"
James sighed. "Yea, well, we grew up here so there's not too much to get used to. We sort of forgot some of the Irish slang since we've been living in America. But other than that, I'd say we're doing quite well."
"Our Irish friends are glad to see us. One of 'em even says America changed us! He says we're more gentile than we were before!" Niall laughed, nudging his twin.
You managed to force a smile on your face, hiding the hurt that was brewing inside. All those years, you had spent with these boys. Now that they were back in Ireland, you were worried that they would get back to the way life was before and just...forget about you.
"I'm hoping neither of you has gotten too drunk since you've been there?" You joked, putting aside your thoughts for the moment.
They both laughed. "We've been to a couple parties, but nothing wild enough to get us drunk," Niall answered.
"You know, I really do think America changed us, Niall. I mean, we're definitely more down-to-earth now. And we aren't as crazy as we were before. We've managed to stay sober this whole time that we've been back! That's saying something!" James admitted, chuckling toward the end.
You giggled and grabbed another piece of watermelon. "I don't mean to cut you short, guys, but I gotta go. I've got some stuff to do," You said.
They both nodded and said their goodbyes to you, blowing kisses at you. You pretended to catch them before saying goodbye yourself and finally signing off of Skype. You took a deep breath and slid away from your computer, still missing them.
After shoving another piece of melon in your mouth, you heard some noise coming from next door. You peeked out your window to see people coming in and out of the Horan's old house. You sighed to yourself, watching the people. You weren't quite used to the fact yet that new people were already moving in. Just before you were about to pull away from the window, someone caught your eye. A boy with shaggy brown hair and brown eyes walked up the stairs. You watched, and suddenly, he looked up, making eye contact.
You shyly smiled at him, and he returned the smile before continuing inside the house.
He had something about him, just seeing him, that made you feel warm. You could picture him being a very friendly person.
"This is it," You thought to yourself. "Time to make another friend at the house next door."
