Early Morning Visit

After you let Niall in and shut the door behind him, you watched him slump into your couch without even taking his jacket off. It was extremely early in the morning, still dark outside, and Niall had decided to show up without any warning. You were lying in your bed, awake and thinking about things, when you heard a heavy knock on your door. You were afraid at first, thinking that Niall would at least call before coming over. But he didn’t. When you went to check the door, seeing him there, you were worried that something bad might have happened. But he looked okay. He wasn’t hurt, he wasn’t angry. His face looked a little tear-stained and his hair was disheveled, but that’s it. There was no other evidence.

You followed his actions and fell onto your couch beside him. His hand immediately rested on your knee and your eyes trailed all the way up his body until they met with his stare. There was a faint smile on his lips as he quietly asked, “How are you? You’re okay, right?”

You looked back at him with a puzzled expression on your face. With a nod of your head, you said, “Yeah, I’m fine. How about you?  Are you okay? You look like something’s been bothering you.”

Niall dropped his eyes and grabbed your hand. He brought the back of your hand to his lips and then whispered, “Don’t worry about me.”

Now you were worrying. Niall was clearly avoiding your question for a reason, and that troubled you. You knew something wasn’t right about him, it was obvious. But he was going to try to avoid talking about it for as long as he could. As he continued to hold your hand in his, he gave it a gentle squeeze. He looked up at you and stared at you for the longest time, until you were starting to feel uncomfortable. He had a dazed smile on his face as his eyes scanned over you. Finally, just before you were going to say something about it, Niall shyly dropped his stare to the floor. He leaned into you and sighed with content. “I missed you,” He said.

Though Niall hadn’t meant for it to be funny, you laughed at this. “You just saw me yesterday! Are you sure you’re okay? You’re acting weird,” You said to him. Now he moved so that one of his arms was wrapped around you, but he kept his other hand intertwined with yours. Every time he moved, it was to get closer to you, but you didn’t notice this. You were confused as to why he couldn’t seem to sit still.

His thumb massaged circles into the palm of your hand as he held it. He settled his eyes on where your hands were tangled together and he finally explained, “I had an awful, awful dream. It was like… you left. You left me and I didn’t know why. I tried chasing after you but you just ignored me until you couldn’t anymore, and then you turned around and told me you never wanted to see me again. I woke up crying. And then I couldn’t fall back asleep because I wanted to be with you. I wanted to see you again, to confirm that it all was just a dream. So I came here without telling you because I knew you’d tell me to wait. And I couldn’t wait. I needed to be with you, to hold you in my arms. To make sure I still had you.”

Now it was clear to you. You couldn’t blame him, because had this been the other way around, you knew you wouldn’t have hesitated to come to his door at this time of the morning. If anything, you felt a fluttering in your heart—a feeling that made you want to squeeze him closer and shower him in kisses. You smiled a little at him, though he couldn’t see it because his eyes were still settled on the floor, as if he was ashamed. You unwrapped his arm from around you and patted your lap instead, signaling for him to lay his head there. He got the hint right away and moved so that he was lying on your couch with his head in your lap. You brushed his hair to the side, looking down at him with a loving smile.

“I would never do that to you. I’d at least give you a reason if I was leaving,” You said to him. You gently stroked the side of his face and continued, “But don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere any time soon. I love you too much.”

He blinked slowly and said, “I love you too, (Y/N). Like, a lot.” You giggled and he added, “I’m sorry if I woke you up.”

You shook your head and told him, “I was awake, anyway. Why don’t you stay the night, Niall? We can share my bed.”

Niall grinned and closed his eyes. “I’d love that,” He said.

And so you spent the night tangled together in your bed, because in all honesty, there was no way either of you were getting to sleep now unless it was at each other’s side.
