Leaf POV:

"Were you listening?" Wren snapped impatiently.

Leaf was too bust staring at the Imparter Sophie had let him keep before she left two days ago. For emergencies, he remembered her telling him. In case there's trouble on either side.

Now it rang, and Sophie Foster was printed boldly on the little screen. She was in trouble already? Or was she just checking in on them, especially after she saw the angry mobs outside the fortress when everyone was restored to their senses?

"LEAF!" Wren shouted at him. Leaf ignored her and pressed Accept

"Leaf!" Sophie said, with little enthusiasm. Dark circles ringed her eyes. She was in a fancy room with a huge canopied bed in the background. Probably her house. "How is it with the humans?"

"Seriously?" Wren raised an eyebrow at him. "Interrupting our council meeting to call a girl?"

"She called me!" Leaf said defensively. "And it's not as if we're real rulers. We're literally teenagers,"

"Undauntable is a real ruler. It's his city now," Daffodil pointed out.

"What's wrong?" Leaf ignored them.

Sophie looked at a piece of paper in her hands, eyes watering. "I don't know. I really don't want to put you guys in any more danger, but . . ."

"What?"

"We just got a lead. Keefe is awake, and he's in the Forbidde—you know, the human cities on my planet,"

"So?" Wren rolled her eyes.

"He's awake!" she cried. "We need to find him. But I can't. Dex and my other friends just called me, and they said they need backup immediately in the Neverseen hideout you guys discovered. And that we have to be there by tomorrow. Mr. Forkle's coming with everyone now, and we're still getting ready, and Dex set off his bomb so they're all mad and—"

"Wait, what?" This time Violet was coming around the table to see Sophie, who was now sobbing. "I—never mind, just go on with ruling our city. I'm sorry I bothered you," she reached to click off the Imparter.

"Wait," said Violet softly. Sophie sniffled as something multi-colored flew in her face and seemed to . . . burp. Wren wrinkled her nose in disgust, as if she could smell the Iggy-burp from across the screen. Sophie merely patted the creature and wiped her nose on her fancy-looking tunic. "Look, we'll help, but we need some time to get settled. Maybe a day or two—"

"Thank you so, so, much," she stared at them with glassy eyes. "I'm sure you still have the clothes we have. I'll come get you tonight, is that enough? I need to leave soon. Or maybe Grady or Edaline can come get you . . ."

"What are you planning now?" asked a squeaky voice in the background. A super tall figure strode into the screen. Leaf wasn't sure, but that . . . uh, creature . . . seemed to have been here too. But Leaf had been asleep half the time, so he probably wasn't the most reliable source.

"Nothing," Sophie sighed. "Seriously, Sandor. Why don't you go help with the preparations? Flori's here already. And there are so many goblins here because of the Council. You can get me some throwing stars."

"Miss Foster—"

"Please," she said so tiredly that Sandor seemed to glance at her with a worried expression that didn't match his imposing, muscly figure. He nodded and hurried out the door.

"We can be ready by tonight," Violet said, tapping her chin. "Everything is still in Wren's room, along with everyone else's once we sent them home. Undauntable needs to stay, though. Are you fine alone?" she asked him.
