A well renowned scientist discovers a way for humans to get incredibly close to magma, thus enabling them to study the potential for life inside of hydrothermal vents and volcanoes.

They find two drastically different species of humanoid/ fish creatures in these environments and bring one of each back to their laboratories to study.

The volcano creature is short and dark-skinned but slender, covered in a strange waxy material that they presume allows it to withstand the intense heat and able to push through the thick liquid with intensely powerful muscles.

The deep sea mermaid is the opposite, long and pallid, with bioluminescent teeth and a body that bloats under the lower pressure. It's hands are covered in a thicker wax, preventing it from washing off in the deep water.

The two are kept in close proximity, and though one is a mammal and the other more fish than human, they get along splendidly
