I didn't realize I was smiling. July nudges my shoulder with his and says, "Ooh, look how happy you are. Is it looooveee?"
I push him away. "Shut up. I won't fall for an idiot like him."
"They say love starts from hate."
"They say straight boys tend to fall for girls."
"They say there can always be exceptions."
"They say idiots are out of exceptions."
He laughs and gives up. It is always a sight to watch when he does. His shoulders shake. His head cranes back as if to laugh at the ceiling. His eyes close and his brows come together. The sound of his laughter is as delightful as it can get. The fact that only I can hear it is something that makes me feel strangely comfortable. After he finishes, I tell him, "Thanks a lot."
"Hmm? For what?"
I look down at my lap. "I don't know. Everything."
"It's still too early to say that."
"Really?" I look at him, and he nods. Then I shrug and say, "I wouldn't know. You won't tell me when you'll leave."
At this he turns his gaze away from mine and purses his lips inward. The sudden tension settling between us dissolves by another text from Edgar.
