I silently followed Mathew to his car for our daily ride home. The baby was in his arms but his grip looked so tight I felt like the baby would stop breathing before we reached the car park. It almost looked as if someone was after his precious child with a machete and a pitchfork mob. Dramatic much.

"Hey, boss so like why did you bring the baby to work ."

"What ."

It wasn't a question it was more of a statement. As in what am  I doing why am I asking him questions. But hey I had to know. Where does one find a baby out of the blue, unless he got some chick knocked up n she came back there was no other way.

"What do you mean what " I laughed.

"What's the point of that question ?" He asked sternly in a voice so low it made goosebumps appear on my skin.

My step faulted for a minute and I tripped but managed to recover in time. He didn't even blink in my direction. Like people were falling all around him and it was the most normal thing to ever happen.

He unlocked the doors and loaded the car seat with one hand then he placed the baby there in it.

The moment I slid in the front seat I heard the engine roar to life. The ride was uncomfortable more than usual but I was used to Mathew, he did this whole macho sadistic vibe with slivers of hope, the hope of wanting something I just wasn't sure what but I was sure about one thing. We were going to be friends !! Whether he knew it or not.

He parked his car outside Walmart and walked out to get the baby who was uncharacteristically quiet. I took my phone out and scrolled through my texts. Its been long since I have seen most of these people I thought to let sigh.

A tap on my window drew my attention. His face was grim if not impatient as if I should have known that I was meant to follow. Shuffling out of the car awkwardly  I shoved my phone into my jeans. Little did I know that when it came to shopping Mathew and I we were like two peas in a pod.
