Abby tucks her son, Dearil, into bed and kisses his forehead, then walks to his door to turn off the light. "Goodnight, Dearil. I love you." she says, smiling. Dearil smiles back at her, but inside he's terrified. "Mom?" he says, worried. Abby looks at him. "Yes, love? What is it?" Dearil looks down a bit. "Um... do I have to sleep alone? What if the bad dreams I have come for me?" he says, scared out of his wits. "Honey," Abby says quietly. "You need to sleep. Don't worry! I'm right across the hallway. If you get scared, come lay with me. I'll protect you." Dearil sighs heavily. "But--" "Sleep," she says. "I'll fight the bad dreams if they come to get you." With that, she shuts off the light and closes the door behind her, then walks to her room and lays down on her bed to drift into a light sleep.
