Sixteen: Seen in a different light

Her eyes were carefully on the road in front, “So Hunter spoke to me and, well basically he said that you need to be careful around Owen.”

I breathed out. Great, he’d even tried to convince Abby too.

“Why?”

“Quote, ‘All he does is sleep around with girls who are too stupid to know better’, unquote.”

I sighed, “I don’t know what his deal is Abby. Like yeah Owen’s a little more forward I guess but I don’t think he’s like that. Well he’s not with me.”

Abby stopped at a red light and turned her attention fully on me, “Naomi, I’m not saying I agree with Hunter or anything… but he kinda seemed pretty serious.”

“Don’t tell me you’re siding with him too,” I almost protested.

“No it’s just… Well then again, he seemed pretty serious when he said he loved me, and we all know how that turned out,” said Abby unimpressed staring into space. The light turned green and Abby continued driving again.

I leaned my head on my fist and stared out of the window, “Are you saying I shouldn’t go to this party then?”

“You know what? Screw what Hunter has to say. You are going to this party with me and we’re going to have a great time, okay?”

A slight smile appeared back on my face, “Glad you’re back.”

When we got to Abby’s house Abby let me borrow a short white dress, flared slightly at the bottom which I wore a black cardigan with as it was slightly colder tonight. I left my hair down and loose, in it's natural waves and put on some brown eyeliner and mascara with a slight peach lipstick. I also borrowed Abby’s white strappy heels which made me about five inches taller. Abby wore a light blue, flowy dress with a floral head-piece and blue heels.  Soon enough we were ready to leave and Abby drove us to the house of one of the guys on the basketball team who was hosting the party.

We walked into the house and were once again greeted by a crowd of people and loud, pumping music. This time as we walked in though, it almost seemed crazy to believe that almost all eyes were on me, instead of Abby. A lot of guys said hi to me as we walked past, including the captain of the Trinity Titans basketball team. Many girls even came up to me telling me how ‘pretty’ I looked. It seemed like there was definitely a lot more people than just our school here tonight. I guess word had got out and travelled around pretty quickly. Abby left me so she could go find Dylan and I didn’t mind. I felt as confident as ever and I seemed to have the attention of almost every guy in the room. It was then, at that very moment that the sudden realisation hit me. I was no longer the unpopular, invisible girl from Jadeland High anymore. I was confident, was looked up to and commanded the attention of the most popular guys in more than just Jadeland high. I had become Abby Hart.

I walked confidently through a few rooms filled with people, and at one point a guy came up to me handing me a drink.

“Thanks,” I smiled sweetly at him.

He managed to say, 'That’s all good,' before an unimpressed girl called his name from across the room.

I took a sip of the drink he had given me as I continued walking throughout the rooms. I stopped when I saw Hunter sitting against a couch sipping from a bottle in his hands every so often. The strawberry blonde barbie from earlier today was once again sitting right next to him, her hand on his knee, speaking to him. Hunter’s face was expressionless.

Owen found me and called out my name, coming over to me, swaying slightly with a bottle of something in his hand. He put his arm around me, “Naomi, I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Yeah,” I smiled up at him before taking a sip of my drink. When I finished it, Owen handed me another drink almost instantly. I took a sip of the new drink as Owen put down his empty bottle on a nearby table and put his hands on both my shoulders. I looked up at him.

“Naomi, you are always so gorgeous,” he said looking down at me.

I felt slightly dizzy as I looked up at him. “Thanks Owen.”

Owen took my vacant hand which wasn’t clasping a drink and brought it up to his face, kissing it as he looked at me.

I was much closer in height to Owen now that I was wearing heels. I suddenly noticed a sort of bruise on Owen's temple, "What happened - "

"I hit my head on my car door earlier," replied Owen as he gently took the drink from my hand and placed it down a table.

"Oh, okay," I replied. That was understandable considering the fact that Owen was tall.

Owen put his hands around my waist, pulling me into a hug. “I like you so much Naomi.”

I turned my head and leaned it on Owen’s shoulder. I could see Hunter glancing at me in the corner of my eye.

Owen pulled back and looked at me just the way he had in the park the other day. His eyes flicked back and forth from my eyes to my lips.

I too looked at Owen the way he was looking at me. The last time I had kissed, or rather pecked a guy was in grade seven. That relationship only lasted a week. But now I was confident, I was a brand new me. What did I have to be afraid of? I reached up, putting my arms around Owen’s neck and kissed him. I pulled back after a moment, until Owen put his hands on my face and kissed me again, longer and more passionately. After a while, Owen pulled back slowly and kissed my cheek then the side of my jaw.

He whispered into my ear, “Let’s go somewhere more private.”

Owen then took me by the hand and led me through the crowds of people and down a hall way.

We kept walking until Owen opened the door to an empty room, leading me inside and closing the door behind us. I stared at the contents of the room. Nothing but an empty bookshelf and a queen sized bed. Owen put his hands around my waist from behind me and began kissing the back of my neck, impatiently. He slowly turned me around as he felt for the zip on my dress.

I hesitantly pulled his hand away from the zip, realising the situation and tried to speak to him, “Owen, I don’t think we should do this.”

“Why not?” he asked huskily kissing my neck.

“Because…I don’t want to.”

“Why?” he whispered again into my ear. “Are you a... virgin?”

He hit the nail on the head. Of course I was a virgin. There were no random flings, secret lovers or one night stands with me. Everything was exactly how you saw it. Not that I cared whether I was or not anyway. I was never the type to say yes to a guy who asked me out or do something just for the sake of being more ‘experienced’. I always believed it was stupid to do something just because everyone else was doing it and I wasn’t desperate in that way. And it wasn’t just for being slightly nervous that I didn’t want to go ahead with this right now, I still didn’t really know Owen that well. I didn’t even technically know who he was until last weekend.

“I’m okay with that if you are,” said Owen continuing to kiss me and lead me back towards the empty bed. “I’ll be careful.”

“Owen,” I tried. “I don’t want to,” I repeated.

Owen kissed my lips forcefully this time and began lowering me back, down onto the bed.

“Owen, I said no,” I repeated again trying to push him back. Suddenly I didn’t feel so confident anymore.

Owen didn’t listen, he ran his hand over my leg and continued kissing my neck.

“Owen, stop it,” I said more loudly. There was a loud ringing in my ears for some reason and the music playing outside grew louder. I tried to get out of Owen’s embrace but he was too strong.

Owen reached down, beginning to unbutton his trousers.

This was a side to Owen I had never witnessed before. I felt hurt, trapped, like there was no way out of this now. I closed my eyes hoping, praying that somehow I would get out of this awful situation.

Suddenly Owen tumbled off of me, onto the floor. He stood up, staring away from me, anger in his eyes.
