Loved

Marlene stared down at her baby with wide eyes, her golden hair hanging in sweaty ropes, her usually even complexion splotchy and red.

"Oh, Mar," Sirius said softly, taking a seat beside her on the hospital bed. He put a hand on the blankets his new daughter was wrapped in, and tears pricked his eyes when she closed her tiny fingers around his large thumb and gave a soft gasp in her sleep.

Marlene held their daughter close to her breast, and leant into Sirius when he put an arm around her.

"Do you think we did the right thing by keeping her?" Marlene said in a rush, never once taking her eyes off the small human clutched in her arms.

"Of course we did," Sirius said firmly.

Of course they did, Marlene thought as she looked down at the sleeping baby. This little girl would be so loved. She was already so loved. And if her life had started with a decision to end it, then Marlene and Sirius would just have to love her even harder.
