Melancholy

Life's melancholy moments lurk
Just beyond the next bend
Waiting within the shadows
To drop upon us, and send

Our thoughts, our lives, away
Upon stormy waters of despair,
Carrying us along till we become
Submerged below a pervious layer

And pass beyond the ephemeral,
Past gates that connote reality,
Borne along the flow of Kokytos,
Mired and bound, so hopelessly

Wound tight, till we can re-emerge
To discover: profound melancholy,
Its exquisite introspective insight,
Reveals an enlightened poignancy.

Perpetual happiness could never
Lift us from the human conditions,
To make great art, for instance,
Propelling us beyond our limitations.
