I

The sun sinks like a shipwreck
Below the dark, flat surface;
Spring wheat, durum, and flax,
A black, liquid horizon below
Sky in orange, fiery eruption.
Yesterday this ocean of plenty
The food basket of Cree and Assiniboine,
Today the food basket of
Tired and troubled humanity,
Its beauty and bounty constant
Despite the industrial degradation,
As monied pockets swell and overflow.

II

The explosion climbs against the azure sky
Towards the high, thick storming clouds
As darkness begins its descent
To drown the wretched crew;
The losses mount, and kin depart,
The signs unseen, the warnings unheard
By nature's most insolent achievement.
And so this tale of piracy goes, as
Mother presents her case
To the jury, our peers,
And swiftly metes out justice
Upon the inhabitants of a stolen ship.
